Background: Adherence and persistence are critical to optimising therapeutic benefit from disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). This prospective, open-label, multicentre, observational study (AubPRO), conducted in 13 hospital-based neurology clinics around Australia, describes treatment satisfaction in patients newly initiated on teriflunomide (Aubagio) and evaluates the use of an electronic patient-reported outcome (PRO) tool.
Methods: Patients (≥18 years) newly initiated on teriflunomide (14 mg/day) were followed up at 24 and 48 weeks.

Divalent metal-ion transporter-1 (DMT1), the principal mechanism by which nonheme iron is taken up at the intestinal brush border, is energized by the H(+)-electrochemical potential gradient. The provenance of the H(+) gradient in vivo is unknown, so we have explored a role for brush-border Na(+)/H(+) exchanger (NHE) isoforms by examining iron homeostasis and intestinal iron handling in mice lacking NHE2 or NHE3. We observed modestly depleted liver iron stores in NHE2-null (NHE2(-/-)) mice stressed on a low-iron diet but no change in hematological or blood iron variables or the expression of genes associated with iron metabolism compared with wild-type mice.

We assessed the strength of the own-species face detection bias by testing whether human faces are located more efficiently than other animal faces, when presented among various other species' faces, in heterogeneous 16-, 36-, and 64-item arrays. Across all array sizes, we found that, controlling for distractor type, human faces were located faster and more accurately than primate and mammal faces, and that, controlling for target type, searches were faster when distractors were human faces compared to animal faces, revealing more efficient processing of human faces regardless of their role as targets or distractors (Experiment 1).

Context: The views of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients have not been considered in the debate on the role of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in the management of T2DM.
Objective: To assess the views of T2DM patients on SMBG.
Methods: Two previously trained research assistants used a structured pre-tested questionnaire to interview 416 T2DM patients practising SMBG in out-patient clinics in the privacy of the patients after they have consented to be interviewed.
In secretory epithelial cells, the basolateral Na(+)-K(+)-2Cl(-) cotransporter (NKCC1) plays a major role in salt and fluid secretion. Our laboratory has identified NKCC1 surface expression as an important regulatory mechanism for Cl(-) secretion in the colonic crypt cell line T84, a process also present in native human colonic crypts. We previously showed that activation of protein kinase C (PKC) by carbachol and phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) decreases NKCC1 surface expression in T84 cells.

We performed an integrated, genome-wide analysis of copy-number changes and gene expression profiles in 90 tumors, including both sporadic and VHL disease-associated tumors, in hopes of identifying new therapeutic targets in ccRCC. We identified 14 regions of nonrandom copy-number change, including 7 regions of amplification (1q, 2q, 5q, 7q, 8q, 12p, and 20q) and 7 regions of deletion (1p, 3p, 4q, 6q, 8p, 9p, and 14q).

The early events in an intestinal ischemic episode have been difficult to evaluate. Using in vivo microscopy we have analyzed in real-time the effects of short (15 min) and long (40-50 min) ischemia with subsequent reperfusion (IR), evaluating structure, integrity, and functioning of the mouse jejunal mucosa while monitoring blood flow by confocal microscopy. IR was imposed by inflation/deflation of a vascular occluder, and blood flow was monitored and confirmed with scanning confocal imaging.

Unlike other established renal tumor cell lines from sporadic renal cell carcinoma, this is the first established renal tumor cell line of BHD, an inheritable neoplastic syndrome. Although colonic lumen NH(4)(+) levels are high, 15-44 mM normal range in humans, relatively few studies have addressed the transport mechanisms for NH(4)(+). More extensive studies have elucidated the transport of NH(4)(+) in the kidney collecting duct, which involves a number of transporter processes also present in the distal colon. Similar to NH(4)(+) secretion in the renal collecting duct, we show that the distal colon secretory model, T84 cell line, has the capacity to secrete NH(4)(+) and maintain an apical-to-basolateral NH(4)(+) gradient.
