Background: Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare sinonasal malignancy primarily treated with surgery. For tumors arising from the olfactory area, traditional treatment involves transcribriform resection of the anterior cranial fossa. Surgery can be performed with unilateral or bilateral resection depending on extent of involvement; however, there are currently no studies comparing outcomes between the two.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection during pregnancy is a significant contributor to reproductive failures in cattle. The bovine receptor for BVDV (CD46) was previously edited with a six amino acid substitution (G82QVLAL to A82LPTFS) and shown to have significantly reduced BVDV susceptibility in a Gir heifer calf. Since a role for CD46 has been proposed in mammalian fertilization, our objective was to assess the edited heifer's fertilization rates, early embryonic development, and germline transmission conformation of the edit.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting women worldwide and is notable for its morphologic and biologic diversity, with varying risks of recurrence following treatment. The Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score test is an important predictive and prognostic genomic assay for estrogen receptor positive/HER2 negative breast cancer that guides therapeutic strategies; however, such tests can be expensive, delay care, and are not widely available. The aim of this study was to develop a multi-model approach integrating the analysis of whole-slide images and clinicopathologic data to predict their associated breast cancer recurrence risks and categorize these patients into two risk groups according to the predicted score: low-risk and high-risk.

High prescription drug prices can financially strain patients and insurers, with substantial clinical repercussions. In recent years, direct-to-consumer (DTC) pharmacies have emerged as potentially lower-cost alternatives for patients to fill prescriptions. We evaluated whether drugs commonly prescribed by otolaryngologists were available at a national DTC pharmacy (Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company [MCCPDC]) and estimated potential Medicare savings from DTC pricing.

  • Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a common procedure with significant cost variability, influenced by factors such as surgery duration and the presence of nasal polyps.
  • A study analyzed 221 patients and found the average cost for the procedure was around $8960, with operating room time making up the largest portion of expenses.
  • The results suggest that improving operating room efficiency could significantly reduce costs, highlighting the need for evidence-based decisions regarding surgical supplies and practices.

Article Synopsis
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is effective for treating nasal polyps, but the extent of surgery can vary, making it crucial to know when revision surgery is needed, especially with new treatments available.
  • A new Completion of Surgery Index (CoSI) was created to evaluate the effectiveness of surgery in polyp patients by comparing CT scans before and after the procedure.
  • In a study of 100 patients, those needing revision surgery showed significant improvements in quality of life, with CoSI scores indicating that those with lower preoperative scores benefited more from the surgery, helping to identify candidates for future interventions.

Introduction: Cases of nitrous oxide (NO)-induced myeloneuropathy are increasing at UK hospitals. At our centre, a dedicated ambulatory care pathway, endorsed nationally, was established to treat and monitor patients with NO-myeloneuropathy in 2021 and refined through three audit cycles. We analysed the outcomes of patients on this pathway to better understand factors associated with non-engagement.

Article Synopsis
  • Bovine congestive heart failure (BCHF) is increasingly common in feedlot cattle, leading to high mortality rates, and the study aimed to identify genetic factors associated with this untreatable condition.
  • Researchers conducted a genome-wide association study comparing 102 BCHF cases with unaffected pen mates, analyzing around 560,000 genetic markers.
  • Significant associations were found with two genes, leading to the conclusion that specific genetic variants can greatly increase the likelihood of BCHF, suggesting potential DNA tests for identifying at-risk cattle.
