Respiratory problems in rowers: outcomes from a systematic assessment of an elite squad.

Objectives: To characterise the respiratory health of elite rowers using a systematic screening approach to assess respiratory health (SARAH) and identify the associations between SARAH findings and acute respiratory illness (ARI) and chest wall injury (CWI).

Methods: A systematic screening approach was conducted in a cohort of elite rowers. The assessment employed validated respiratory questionnaires and multiple physiological measures.

Year-round injury and illness surveillance in UK summer paralympic sport athletes: 2016-2019.

Recovery from COVID-19 in athletes and impact on sporting participation.

Insight regarding the impact of COVID-19 on return to sporting participation is a key issue for many athletes. We report time-loss following respiratory tract infection (RTI), over the pandemic, in UK athletes preparing for international competition. During the study, 566 athletes developed COVID-19 and 217 developed other causes of RTI.

Previous research has provided evidence that readers experience processing difficulty when reading words that have a transposed-letter (TL) neighbour (e.g., TRAIL has the TL neighbour TRIAL).

The Relationship Between Personality Traits and the Processing of Emotion Words: Evidence from Eye-Movements in Sentence Reading.

Previous research shows that processing times on emotion words (both negative and positive) are faster than on non-emotional neutral words. In the current study, we explored how personality traits (the Big Five and the trait emotional intelligence factors) may further influence the processing of emotion versus non-emotion words by conducting two experiments where participants silently read sentences while their eye movements were recorded. The results replicated the facilitative emotion effect and showed that those with higher agreeableness scores had stronger emotion effects on positive words and those with higher extraversion scores, higher openness scores, higher agreeableness scores, lower sociability scores, and higher emotionality scores had stronger emotion effects on negative words.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for the allopathic resident elective: does it change practice after graduation?

Context: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for the allopathic resident is an elective at the University of Minnesota North Memorial Residency that engages the resident in the basic tenants of osteopathic medicine, with exposure to the vast application of OMT with a curricular focus on low back pain management. Implementing an elective curriculum is a feasible way to improve attitudes in OMT for MDs in a Family Medicine residency, and residents can learn OMT in an elective rotation.

Objectives: This article aims to determine if MDs who complete an OMT for the allopathic physician elective rotation have higher comfort caring for patients with back pain compared to those who do not complete the elective.

Objectives: To identify the priority injury and illness types across UK summer Olympic World Class Programme sports to inform development, implementation and evaluation of associated injury risk mitigation and management initiatives.

Methods: Four years (2016-2019) of electronic medical records of 1247 athletes from 22 sports were analysed and reported using methods based on the 2020 International Olympic Committee consensus statement for epidemiological recording and reporting.

Results: 3562 injuries and 1218 illness were recorded, accounting for 146 156 and 27 442 time-loss days.

A Chemically Fuelled Molecular Automaton Displaying Programmed Migration of Zn Between Alternative Binding Sites.

A molecular system comprising a cationic zinc complex and an amino acid-derived ambident ligand having phosphate and carboxylate binding sites undergoes a series of rearrangements in which the metal cation migrates autonomously from one site to another. The location of the metal is identified by the circular dichroism spectrum of a ligated bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (BQPA) chromophore, which takes a characteristic shape at each binding site. Migration is fuelled by the decomposition of trichloroacetic acid to CO and CHCl , which progressively neutralises the acidity of the system as a function of time, revealing in sequence binding sites of increasing basicity.

Molecules that change shape in response to environmental conditions are central to biological molecular communication devices and their synthetic chemical analogues. Here we report a molecular system in which a series of chiral anionic ligands of differing basicity are selectively protonated according to the pH of the medium. A cationic circular dichroism (CD) reporter complex responds to anion binding by selecting one of two alternative enantiomeric conformations.

Clinical patterns, recovery time and prolonged impact of COVID-19 illness in international athletes: the UK experience.

Objectives: To report COVID-19 illness pattern, symptom duration and time loss in UK elite athletes.

Methods: Observational, clinical and database review of athletes with symptomatic COVID-19 illness managed within the UK Sports Institutes. Athletes were classified as confirmed (positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR or antibody tests) or probable (consistent clinical features) COVID-19.

The benefits of a systematic assessment of respiratory health in illness-susceptible athletes.

Respiratory tract illness is a leading cause of training and in-competition time loss in elite athletes. Asthma is known to be prevalent in athletes, but the coexistence of other respiratory problems in those deemed to be susceptible to respiratory tract illness is unknown. The aim of this study was to apply a comprehensive prospective approach to identify respiratory problems and explore relationships in athletes with heightened respiratory illness susceptibility.

Eccentric hamstring strength in elite track and field athletes on the British Athletics world class performance program.

Objectives: This novel study aims to provide unique data on eccentric hamstring strength in elite track and field athletes.

Design: Clinical measurement, cross-sectional study.

Setting: Across two British Athletics performance centres.

Team-based care: an expanded medical assistant role - enhanced rooming and visit assistance.

Primary care practices face significant challenges as they pursue the Quadruple Aim. Redistributing care across the interprofessional primary care team by expanding the role of the medical assistant (MA) is a potential strategy to address these challenges. Two sequential, linked processes to expand the role of the MA, called Enhanced Rooming and Visit Assistance, were implemented in four family medicine residency clinics in Minnesota.

Video Review Process: Enhancing Impact and Resident/Faculty Satisfaction.

Introduction: Although video review (VR) is a common component of family medicine (FM) resident education, levels of faculty and resident satisfaction and the perceived impact of the VR process are unknown. Our FM residency program made several changes to our VR process, including a new feedback form highlighting strengths and areas for growth, a post-VR email to the resident including a tip sheet on an identified skill, and follow-up shadowing by a behavioral health clinician to increase VR impact and reinforce skill development.

Methods: FM residency faculty (n=11) and residents (n=34) completed an anonymous 20-item online survey.

Integrated care clinic: Creating enhanced clinical pathways for integrated behavioral health care in a family medicine residency clinic serving a low-income, minority population.

Introduction: Research examining the implementation and effectiveness of integrated behavioral health (BH) care in family medicine/primary care is growing. However, research identifying ways to consistently use integrated BH in busy family medicine/primary care settings with underserved populations is limited. For patients with an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) with mild or no bleeding, withhold the warfarin and recheck INR in 1 to 2 days; if INR >5, add oral vitamin K supplementation.

Background: Seated posture and trunk control are important factors affecting upper extremity (UE) function of wheelchair users. A stable pelvis and trunk are required to provide a base from which UE movement occurs, but, conversely, the ability to move one's trunk and pelvis can increase functional ranges of motion. For wheelchair users, balancing sufficient trunk support with adequate trunk mobility has important functional and medical consequences.

A comparison of isokinetic strength testing and gait analysis in patients with posterior cruciate-retaining and substituting knee arthroplasties.

Fourteen patients with a posterior-stabilized prosthesis in one knee and a posterior cruciate-retaining prosthesis in the contralateral knee and both scoring good or excellent on the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) knee scale were evaluated by isokinetic muscle testing and comprehensive gait analysis at a mean follow-up of 98 months after arthroplasty. The average HSS knee score (93 points) and the average Knee Society score (94 points) were the same for the cruciate-retaining and posterior-stabilized knees. No differences were noted between the cruciate-retaining and the posterior stabilized knees with respect to isokinetic muscle testing parameters (peak torque, endurance, angle of peak torque, and torque acceleration energy) for both quadriceps and hamstrings.
