Respiratory infection with influenza A virus delays remyelination and alters oligodendrocyte metabolism.

Peripheral viral infection disrupts oligodendrocyte (OL) homeostasis such that endogenous remyelination may be affected. Here, we demonstrate that influenza A virus infection perpetuated a demyelination- and disease-associated OL phenotype following cuprizone-induced demyelination that resulted in delayed OL maturation and remyelination in the prefrontal cortex. Furthermore, we assessed cellular metabolism , and found that infection altered brain OL and microglia metabolism in a manner that opposed the metabolic profile induced by remyelination.

Biological tissue is organized over scales of nanometers to centimeters. Harnessing molecular imaging across intact, three-dimensional samples on this scale requires new types of microscopes with larger fields of view and working distance, as well as higher throughput.

In cancer cells, glutaminolysis is the primary source of biosynthetic precursors, fueling the TCA cycle with glutamine-derived α-ketoglutarate. The enhanced production of α-ketoglutarate is critical to cancer cells as it provides carbons for the TCA cycle to produce glutathione, fatty acids, and nucleotides, and contributes nitrogens to produce hexosamines, nucleotides, and many nonessential amino acids. Efforts to inhibit glutamine metabolism in cancer using amino acid analogs have been extensive.

Draft Genome Sequences of Six Strains Isolated from the Rhizosphere of Wheat Grown in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil.

This study presents high-quality draft genome assemblies of six bacterial strains isolated from the roots of wheat grown in soil contaminated with cadmium. The results of this study will help to elucidate at the molecular level how heavy metals affect interactions between beneficial rhizobacteria and crop plants.

Optimized peripheral blood progenitor cell mobilization for autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation in children with high-risk and refractory malignancies.

Background: Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) using hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) has become an important therapeutic modality for patients with high-risk malignancies. Current literature on standardized method for HPC apheresis in children is sparse and failure rate reported as high as 30%.

Patients/methods: A retrospective study of 125 pediatric patients with high-risk malignancies undergoing aHSCT in Western Australia between 1997 and 2016 was conducted.

Structures, processes and outcomes of specialist critical care nurse education: An integrative review.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to review and synthesise international literature to reveal the contemporary structures, processes, and outcomes of critical care nurse (CCN) education.

Method: An integrative review on specialist critical care education was guided by Whittemore and Knafl's integrative review steps: problem identification; literature search; and data evaluation, analysis, and presentation. Donabedian's Quality Framework (Structure-Process-Outcome) provided a useful analytical lens and structure for the reporting of findings.

Development of a position statement for Australian critical care nurse education.

Position statements are used by large organisations such as the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses to publically present an official philosophy or beliefs and to propose recommendations. Position statements are increasingly used by health departments and healthcare facilities to allocate resources and to guide and audit nursing practice, yet there are limited resources on the process of their development. A position statement should help readers better understand the issue, communicate solutions to problems, and inform decision-making.

Laser Synthesis and Spectroscopy of Ligand-Coated Chromium Oxide Nanoclusters.

Ultra-small chromium oxide nanoclusters produced by laser vaporization in a fast flow tube reactor are ligand-coated by gas-phase reactions with acetonitrile vapor and then captured in a cold trap and transferred to solution. The resulting clusters are characterized with mass spectrometry, UV-visible absorption and emission spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. According to mass spectrometry, clusters of the form Cr O (MeCN) are produced in the size range of x ≤ 10 and y < 25.

Sensitivity of helioseismic measurements of normal-mode coupling to flows and sound-speed perturbations.

In this article, we derive and compute the sensitivity of measurements of coupling between normal modes of oscillation in the Sun to underlying flows. The theory is based on first-born perturbation theory, and the analysis is carried out using the formalism described by Lavely & Ritzwoller (1992). Albeit tedious, we detail the derivation and compute the sensitivity of specific pairs of coupled normal modes to anomalies in the interior.

Functional recovery in T13-L1 hemisected rats resulting from peripheral nerve rerouting: role of central neuroplasticity.

Background: Functional improvements after spinal cord injury (SCI) have been reported anecdotally following neurotization, in other words, rerouting nerves proximal to injured cord segments to distal neuromuscular targets, although the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown.

Aim: To test our hypothesis that neurotization-mediated recovery is primarily attributable to CNS neuroplasticity that therefore manifests optimal response during particular therapeutic windows, we anastomosed the T12 intercostal nerve to the ipsilateral L3 nerve root 1-4 weeks after T13-L1 midline hemisection in rats.

Results: While axonal tracing and electromyography revealed limited reinnervation in the target muscles, neurobehavioral function, as assessed by locomotion, extensor postural thrust and sciatic functional index of SCI rats receiving neurotization 7-10 days postinjury (n = 11), recovered to levels close to non-SCI controls with neurotization only (n = 3), beginning 3-5 weeks postanastomosis.

Overexpression of COX-2 in human osteosarcoma cells decreases proliferation and increases apoptosis.

Overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is generally considered to promote tumorigenesis. To investigate a potential role of COX-2 in osteosarcoma, we overexpressed COX-2 in human osteosarcoma cells. Saos-2 cells deficient in COX-2 expression were retrovirally transduced or stably transfected with murine COX-2 cDNA.

An evaluation of metabolic risks for coronary death in the Asia Pacific region.

Aim: To investigate the generalizability of current definitions of the metabolic syndrome in Asia-Pacific populations, and whether information on metabolic risk factors could be better used to discriminate fatal coronary heart disease (CHD) risk.

Methods And Results: Analyses were performed on individual participant data from 26 cohorts involving 329, 166 participants from the Asia Pacific region. Sensitivity and specificity estimates for CHD death associated with cut-points as defined by the U.

Acute renal failure, anterior myocardial infarction, and atrial fibrillation complicating epinephrine abuse.

After injecting the solution extracted from a Primatene Mist inhaler, a patient experienced epinephrine overdose that resulted in an acute myocardial infarction and acute renal failure. The exact amount of epinephrine injected was unknown, but was thought to be between 82.5 and 124 mg, more than 25 times higher than the amount normally administered.

In particular, healthcare organizations need to know how to respond when their organizations are approached about a consolidation opportunity and how to determine whether a consolidation transaction would be strategically advantageous.

Plasma membrane clustering of system y+ (CAT-1) amino acid transporter as detected by immunohistochemistry.

Transport of cationic amino acids in fully differentiated mammalian cells is mediated primarily by system y1+ [cationic amino acid transporter (CAT)-1 gene product]. Antibodies, prepared against synthetic peptide sequences predicted to be extracellular loops of the CAT-1 transporter protein, detected the transporter on the surface of cultured cells. In human fibroblasts, porcine pulmonary artery endothelial cells, and cultured rat hepatoma cells, the CAT-1 transporter protein was clustered in an apparent random pattern throughout the plasma membrane.

Interest rate swaps: financial tool of the '90s.

The implementation of prospective payment for capital costs makes it more necessary than ever for healthcare financial managers to be able to creatively balance capital costs with risk. A new financial management tool--the interest rate swap (a contractual agreement in which one party with a fixed interest rate payment liability and another party with a variable interest payment liability agree to trade those obligations)--is proving to be a solution for a growing number of hospital managers. This article describes the uses of interest rate swaps and discusses the variables to be considered when evaluating whether the benefits of an interest rate swap offset the additional risk.

Observations of Time Variation in the Sun's Rotation.

Observations of solar p-mode frequency splittings obtained at Big Bear Solar Observatory in 1986 and during 1988-90 reveal small ( approximately 1 percent) changes in the sun's subsurface angular velocity with solar cycle. An asymptotic inversion of the splitting data yields the latitude dependence of the rotation rate and shows that the largest changes in the angular velocity, approximately 4 nanohertz, occurred between 1986 and the later years, at high ( approximately 60 degrees ) solar latitudes. Earlier helioseismic observations suggest that solar cycle changes in the ratio of magnetic to turbulent pressure in the solar convection zone are large enough to account for the magnitude of the observed angular velocity variations but a detailed model of the phenomenon does not exist.

Physical therapy assessment and treatment protocol for nursing home residents.

This article describes a standard protocol for assessing physical function in elderly nursing home residents. Major physical dimensions that are measured with the protocol include range of motion, muscle force, muscle reflex activity, sensation, soft tissue status, balance/coordination, and posture. A practical, functionally prioritized treatment model based on the assessment is also presented.
