The gendered nature of leader behaviors: Navigating stereotype threat from conservation of resources and gender role perspectives.

Previous research has highlighted the benefits followers gain from their leaders' initiating structure and consideration. Adopting a leader-centric perspective, we propose that leaders' gender influences the impact of these behaviors for leaders themselves. Drawing from conservation of resources and gender role theories, we explain why gender-role-inconsistent leader behaviors (behaviors that go against gender stereotypes, such as initiating structure for women and consideration for men) is detrimental, while engaging in gender-role-consistent leader behaviors (such as initiating structure for men and consideration for women) is beneficial.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has revolutionized personalized oncology care by providing exceptional insights into the complex genomic landscape. NGS offers comprehensive cancer profiling, which enables clinicians and researchers to better understand the molecular basis of cancer and to tailor treatment strategies accordingly. Targeted therapies based on genomic alterations identified through NGS have shown promise in improving patient outcomes across various cancer types, circumventing resistance mechanisms and enhancing treatment efficacy.

Neurological Complications of COVID-19: Unraveling the Pathophysiological Underpinnings and Therapeutic Implications.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), induced a global pandemic with a diverse array of clinical manifestations. While the acute phase of the pandemic may be waning, the intricacies of COVID-19's impact on neurological health remain a crucial area of investigation. Early recognition of the spectrum of COVID-19 symptoms, ranging from mild fever and cough to life-threatening respiratory distress and multi-organ failure, underscored the significance of neurological complications, including anosmia, seizures, stroke, disorientation, encephalopathy, and paralysis.

What works to promote staff health in prison settings: a systematic review.

Purpose: Given epidemiological data highlighting poor health outcomes for prison staff and correctional workers, this systematic review aims to understand what health promotion interventions, delivered in prison settings, are effective for prison staff health.

Design/methodology/approach: A systematic review was undertaken, with search parameters encompassing papers published over a ten-year period (2013-2023). Health promotion programmes; well-being programmes; and occupational health interventions to support prison staff health as part of a targeted approach or as part of a whole-prison approach were included in the review.

Evidence-based decision-making in a climate of political expediency: insights from local government.

Aims: Local authorities in England are responsible for public health and health promotion. This article sought to explore how research and decision-making co-exist in a local authority in England.

Methods: An Embedded Researcher was based within the local authority and used qualitative methodology to address the research aim.

Perspectives on community-based system change for people living with persistent pain: insights from developing the "Rethinking Pain service".

In this perspective article we advocate community-based system change for people living with persistent pain. Our view is that greater use of the voluntary and community sector, in partnership with the clinical sector, creates the conditions for a "whole person" approach to pain management, leading to greater personalised care for adults living with long-term pain whilst having the potential to ease some of the pressures on General Practitioners and other clinical services. We advocate pain care that is socially connected, meaningful within socio-cultural contexts and aligned with the principles of salutogenesis.

Health promotion: reconfiguring nurses' practice to reduce social inequalities.

Inequalities in people's health due to economic or social circumstances remain a persistent challenge in the UK, with people from disadvantaged communities disproportionately likely to die earlier and experience more health issues than the general population. Health promotion has a vital role in reversing health inequalities and requires a focus on structural and political-level determinants of health, rather than individuals' lifestyle choices. However, while health promotion is a significant aspect of nurse education curricula, individual nurses may experience role confusion regarding the application of health promotion in their practice.

Background: Community-based volunteering supports outbreak management by extending reach into at-risk communities. This paper examines the application of a 'community champions' model in England, UK, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Evidence pre-pandemic shows that community champion interventions tap into social networks to strengthen connections with disadvantaged communities.

Lived experience of diet-related health education in type 2 diabetes and hypertension comorbidity in The Gambia.

The incidence and prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (and their comorbidity) have been increasing in sub-Saharan Africa, including The Gambia. Diet is a critical driver of these public health problems, and diet-related health education is a major strategy employed for their prevention and management. The aim of this paper is to explore the lived experiences of diet-related health education among individuals with comorbid type 2 diabetes and hypertension in Serrekunda, The Gambia, a subject hitherto unexplored in the country.

Plastic Surgery Training: Trends in Hand Surgery Fellowship in the Setting of a Pandemic.

Unlabelled: Given the diminishing presence of hand surgeons trained in plastic surgery, we evaluated the associated trends in annual hand meeting educational content and postgraduate job offerings, and analyzed the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on trainees in hand surgery.

Methods: Hand meeting registration and educational content were analyzed over the past 10 years. Current hand surgery job offerings were evaluated for training requirements, and the annual rates of subspecialty certificate in surgery of the hand board certifications were compared across training backgrounds.

Effect of Nonlinear Hyperelastic Property of Arterial Tissues on the Pulse Wave Velocity Based on the Unified-Fiber-Distribution (UFD) Model.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a key, independent risk factor for future cardiovascular events. The Moens-Korteweg equation describes the relation between PWV and the stiffness of arterial tissue with an assumption of isotopic linear elastic property of the arterial wall. However, the arterial tissue exhibits highly nonlinear and anisotropic mechanical behaviors.

Pain through the perspective of art and creativity: insights from the Unmasking Pain project.

People struggle to tell their story of living with pain and when they do it is articulated in a way that may not be understood, heard or taken seriously. Unmasking Pain is an artist-led project that explored creative approaches to tell stories of life with pain. The project was led by a dance theatre company that specialises in storytelling and emotional experiences for players and audiences.

A healthy settings approach to addressing painogenic environments: New perspectives from health promotion.

Structural approaches to promoting health focus on policies and practices affecting health at the community level and concentrate on systems and forces of society, including distribution of power, that foster disadvantage and diminish health and well-being. In this paper we advocate consideration of structural approaches to explore macro level influences on the burden of persistent pain on society. We argue that health promotion is an appropriate discipline to ameliorate painogenic environments and that a "settings approach" offers a crucial vehicle to do this.

Reconfiguring the biomedical dominance of pain: time for alternative perspectives from health promotion?

Strategies to reduce the burden of persistent pain in society are rooted in a biomedical paradigm. These strategies are located downstream, managing persistent pain once it has become a problem. Upstream activities that create social conditions to promote health and well-being are likely to help, yet health promotion discourse and research are lacking in pain literature.

Repetitive Low-level Blast Exposure and Neurocognitive Effects in Army Ranger Mortarmen.

Introduction: Occupational exposure to repetitive, low-level blasts in military training and combat has been tied to subconcussive injury and poor health outcomes for service members. Most low-level blast studies to date have focused on explosive breaching and firing heavy weapon systems; however, there is limited research on the repetitive blast exposure and physiological effects that mortarmen experience when firing mortar weapon systems. Motivated by anecdotal symptoms of mortarmen, the purpose of this paper is to characterize this exposure and its resulting neurocognitive effects in order to provide preliminary findings and actionable recommendations to safeguard the health of mortarmen.

Health-promoting prisons in the female estate: an analysis of prison inspection data.

Background: Women in prison have comparatively greater health needs than men, often compounded by structures and policies within the prison system. The notion of a 'health-promoting' prison is a concept which has been put forward to address health inequalities and health deterioration in prisons. It has, however, not been fully discussed in relation to women in prison.

Emerging lessons from the commissioning and delivery of a gambling treatment service.

Objectives: Gambling is a public health concern, given the multiplicity of harms for individuals, families and communities. This article reports on the commissioning and delivery of a problem gambling treatment service in a metropolitan area in England, where the concentration of problem gambling is often higher than the national average.

Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study, using purposively sampled 'experts' and stakeholders involved in the conception and set-up of the service.

Developing health and wellbeing in prisons: an analysis of prison inspection reports in Scotland.

Background: The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) has been long regarded for its progressive policy approach to health promotion in prison. It is one of the few countries with a strategic plan for health promotion implementation. Given the paucity of understanding in relation to the concept of a health promoting prison, this study assessed routinely collected prison inspection data to understand and distil learning in regard the practical implementation of health-promoting prisons.
