Perspectives on Telemedicine from a National Study of Youth in the United States.

Telemedicine is increasingly popular with the recent surge in use due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite youth status as "tech natives," limited data are available on their perspectives on telemedicine. Our study seeks to understand youth telemedicine knowledge, prior experiences, preferences for use, and the impact of COVID-19 on these perspectives.

Azithromycin and Doxycycline Resistance Profiles of U.S. Mycoplasma genitalium Strains and Their Association with Treatment Outcomes.

Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterium associated with nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) in men and cervicitis, endometritis, and pelvic inflammatory disease in women. Effective treatment is challenging due to the inherent, and increasingly acquired, antibiotic resistance in this pathogen. In our treatment trial conducted from 2007 to 2011 in Seattle, WA, we demonstrated poor efficacy of azithromycin (AZM) and doxycycline (DOX) against M.

Realization of a Graphene/PMMA Acoustic Capacitive Sensor Released by Silicon Dioxide Sacrificial Layer.

We report the realization of an acoustic capacitive microphone formed by graphene/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). It is the first time that the ultra-large graphene/PMMA membrane suspended fully over the cavity has been fabricated by releasing the silicon dioxide sacrificial layer underneath the membrane. The novelty in the fabrication method is that the silicon dioxide layer has been etched by hydrogen fluoride vapor from the back of the partly etched silicon substrate.

Mechanisms that allow vaccination against an oncolytic vesicular stomatitis virus-encoded transgene to enhance safety without abrogating oncolysis.

Vaccination can prevent viral infections via virus-specific T cells, among other mechanisms. A goal of oncolytic virotherapy is replication of oncolytic viruses (OVs) in tumors, so pre-existing T cell immunity against an OV-encoded transgene would seem counterproductive. We developed a treatment for melanomas by pre-vaccinating against an oncolytic vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)-encoded tumor antigen.

A reasoned argument as to why the status quo for oral and maxillofacial surgery training is not sustainable and an alternative is suggested. It is argued that the current financial burden, future pension provision and unacceptable work/life balance must be addressed immediately to ensure uptake of training posts for preservation of the specialty.

Neurological manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection in hospitalised children and adolescents in the UK: a prospective national cohort study.

Background: The spectrum of neurological and psychiatric complications associated with paediatric SARS-CoV-2 infection is poorly understood. We aimed to analyse the range and prevalence of these complications in hospitalised children and adolescents.

Methods: We did a prospective national cohort study in the UK using an online network of secure rapid-response notification portals established by the CoroNerve study group.

Drug-induced liver injury in Australia, 2009-2020: the increasing proportion of non-paracetamol cases linked with herbal and dietary supplements.

Objective: To compare the characteristics and outcomes of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) caused by paracetamol and non-paracetamol medications, particularly herbal and dietary supplements.

Design: Retrospective electronic medical record data analysis.

Setting, Participants: Adults admitted with DILI to the Gastroenterology and Liver Centre at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney (a quaternary referral liver transplantation centre), 2009-2020.

Iron deficiency is highly prevalent among candidates for metabolic surgery and may affect perioperative outcomes.

Background: The presence of chronic low-grade inflammation, commonly identified in patients with severe obesity, alters iron homeostasis and indicators of iron status, fostering the development of updated guidelines for the diagnosis of iron deficiency (ID). Current recommended diagnostic thresholds for ID in obesity derived from expert opinion include a ferritin level of <30 ng/mL and/or transferrin saturation (TSAT) < 20%. Earlier studies of ID among candidates for metabolic surgery using low levels of ferritin or iron as diagnostic thresholds demonstrated a prevalence of 5%-20%.

Stress testing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) is an important tool used to gauge chemical stability and identify potential degradation products. While different flavors of API stress testing systems have been used in experimental investigations for decades, the detailed kinetics of such systems as well as the chemical composition of prominent reactive species, specifically reactive oxygen species, are unknown. As a first step toward understanding and modeling API oxidation in stress testing, we investigated a typical radical "soup" solution an API is subject to during stress testing.

Resilience and associated psychological, social/cultural, behavioural, and biological factors in patients with cardiovascular disease: a systematic review.

Aims: The aim of this systematic review of the literature is to synthesize the evidence regarding the associations between individual-level psychological, social/cultural, behavioral, and biological variables with resilience in patients with CVD.

Methods And Results: A systematic search of PubMed, PsycINFO and CINAHL was conducted from database inception through March 2020. Studies with a quantitative research design were eligible for inclusion if published in English and focused on resilience among adults with CVD.

COVID-19 Encephalitis with SARS-CoV-2 Detected in Cerebrospinal Fluid Presenting as a Stroke Mimic.

We report the case of a 35-year-old male with COVID-19 encephalitis presenting as a stroke mimic with sudden-onset expressive and receptive dysphasia, mild confusion and right arm incoordination. The patient received thrombolysis for a suspected ischaemic stroke, but later became febrile and SARS-CoV-2 was detected in cerebrospinal fluid. Electroencephalography demonstrated excess in slow waves, but neuroimaging was reported as normal.

Determining the effect size of aerobic exercise training on the standard lipid profile in sedentary adults with three or more metabolic syndrome factors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

Objectives: To estimate the change in the standard lipid profile (SLP) of adults diagnosed with ≥3 metabolic syndrome (MetS) factors following aerobic exercise training (AET); and to investigate whether study/intervention covariates are associated with this change.

Design: Systematic review with univariate meta-analysis and meta-regression.

Data Sources: English language searches of online databases from inception until July 2020.

Clinical review of cerebral venous thrombosis in the context of COVID-19 vaccinations: Evaluation, management, and scientific questions.

Background: Vaccine induced immune mediated thrombocytopenia or VITT, is a recent and rare phenomenon of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, frequently including cerebral venous thromboses (CVT), that has been described following vaccination with adenovirus vaccines ChAdOx1 nCOV-19 (AstraZeneca) and Ad26.COV2·S Johnson and Johnson (Janssen/J&J). The evaluation and management of suspected cases of CVT post COVID-19 vaccination are critical skills for a broad range of healthcare providers.

The effect of social media interventions on physical activity and dietary behaviours in young people and adults: a systematic review.

Background: The objectives of this systematic review were to update the evidence base on social media interventions for physical activity and diet since 2014, analyse the characteristics of interventions that resulted in changes to physical activity and diet-related behaviours, and assess differences in outcomes across different population groups.

Methods: A systematic search of the literature was conducted across 5 databases (Medline, Embase, EBSCO Education, Wiley and Scopus) using key words related to social media, physical activity, diet, and age. The inclusion criteria were: participants age 13+ years in the general population; an intervention that used commercial social media platform(s); outcomes related to changes to diet/eating or physical activity behaviours; and quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies.

Adductor canal block with or without added magnesium sulfate following total knee arthroplasty: a multi-arm randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: Postoperative analgesia following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) often includes intrathecal opioids, periarticular injection (PAI) of local anesthetic, systemic multimodal analgesia, and/or peripheral nerve blockade. The adductor canal block (ACB) provides analgesia without muscle weakness and magnesium sulphate (MgSO) may extend its duration. The purpose of this trial was to compare the duration and quality of early post-TKA analgesia in patients receiving postoperative ACB (± MgSO) in addition to standard care.

Combined action observation and motor imagery: An intervention to combat the neural and behavioural deficits associated with developmental coordination disorder.

Action observation (AO) and motor imagery (MI) have been used separately across different populations to alleviate movement impairment. Recently these two forms of covert motor simulation have been combined (combined action observation and motor imagery; AOMI), resulting in greater neurophysiological activity in the motor system, and more favourable behavioural outcomes when compared to independent AO and MI. This review aims to outline how some of the neural deficits associated with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are evident during AO and MI, and highlight how these motor simulation techniques have been used independently to improve motor skill learning in children in this population.

Molecular analysis of a fungal disease in the habitat-forming brown macroalga Phyllospora comosa (Fucales) along a latitudinal gradient.

Infectious diseases affecting habitat-forming species can have significant impacts on population dynamics and alter the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems. Recently, a fungal infection was described as the causative agent of necrotic lesions on the stipe of the forest-forming macroalga Phyllospora comosa, a disease named "stipe rot" (SR). Here, we developed a quantitative PCR (qPCR) method for rapid detection and quantification of this pathogen, which was applied to evaluate the level of SR infection in eight P.

The Association between Poor Diet Quality, Physical Fatigability and Physical Function in the Oldest-Old from the Geisinger Rural Aging Study.

More perceived physical fatigability and poor diet quality are associated with impairments in physical function in older adults. However, the degree to which more perceived fatigability explains the association between poor diet quality and low physical function is unknown. We examined this relationship in 122 (66F, 56M) of the oldest-old participants from the Geisinger Rural Aging Study (GRAS).

Profiles of Loneliness and Social Isolation in Physically Active and Inactive Older Adults in Rural England.

Loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher risk of morbidity and mortality and physical inactivity in older age. This study explored the socioecological context in which both physically active and inactive older adults experience loneliness and/or social isolation in a UK rural setting. A mixed-methods design employed semi structured interviews and accelerometer-measured moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).

Identifying Conformational Isomers of Organic Molecules in Solution via Unsupervised Clustering.

We present a systematic approach for the identification of statistically relevant conformational macrostates of organic molecules from molecular dynamics trajectories. The approach applies to molecules characterized by an arbitrary number of torsional degrees of freedom and enables the transferability of the macrostates definition across different environments. We formulate a dissimilarity measure between molecular configurations that incorporates information on the characteristic energetic cost associated with transitions along all relevant torsional degrees of freedom.
