Rothera is a British Antarctic Survey research station located on Adelaide Island adjacent, to the Antarctic Peninsula. Diving is vital to support a long-standing marine science programme but poses challenges due to the extreme and remote environment in which it is undertaken. We summarise the diving undertaken and describe the medical measures in place to mitigate the risk to divers.

Implementation of negative pressure for acute pediatric burns (INPREP): A stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial protocol.

Background: Acute application of adjunctive negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) significantly improves time to re-epithelialization in pediatric burn patients. This adjunctive treatment has not yet been broadly or routinely adopted as a standard primary burns dressing strategy. The Implementation of Negative PRessurE for acute Pediatric burns (INPREP) trial will implement and evaluate the impact of adjunctive NPWT in parallel with co-designed implementation strategies and resources across four major pediatric hospitals.

Parents' emotions after their child's burn might be influenced by the injury circumstances or demographic characteristics of the patient and family. Parents' post-traumatic stress symptoms and their child's distress may interact and affect emotional states. Clinical prediction of wound re-epithelisation outcomes in non-severe burn injury using the plasma lipidome.

Whilst wound repair in severe burns has received substantial research attention, non-severe burns (<20 % total body surface area) remain relatively understudied, despite causing considerable physiological impact and constituting most of the hospital admissions for burns. Early discussions about research preferences and wishes may be beneficial.

Social expectations play a crucial role in shaping dietary practices among women and children. However, despite significant attention to promoting social and behavioral change in nutrition-focused programs and research, the influence of social norms on women's agency in enhancing nutrition practices is often overlooked. In this perspective, we advocate for a paradigm shift by incorporating a "norms aware" approach.

Background: Health and care research involving people who lack capacity to consent requires an alternative decision maker to decide whether they participate or not based on their 'presumed will'. However, this is often unknown. Advance research planning (ARP) is a process for people who anticipate periods of impaired capacity to prospectively express their preferences about research participation and identify who they wish to be involved in future decisions.

Background: Although male participation in maternal health has gained increasing recognition and support over the years, little is known about male involvement during pregnancy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This paper identified male involvement patterns during pregnancy and evaluated their associations with pregnancy and birth preparedness knowledge, gender-equitable attitudes, self-efficacy, and co-parental relationship factors. Lastly, it explored the moderating effect of gender-equitable attitudes and intimate partner violence on the association between relationship satisfaction and male involvement.

Background: Behavior change techniques (BCTs) have been extensively used in physical activity interventions for children, however, no systematic reviews have synthesized their effects.

Purpose: The present review aimed to identify the most promising BCTs used in physical activity interventions associated with (i) increased physical activity behavior and (ii) positive psychosocial outcomes in children with chronic conditions.

Methods: A systematic search of 6 databases identified 61 articles as eligible for inclusion.

Genetic influence on scar vascularity after burn injury in individuals of European ancestry: A prospective cohort study.

After burn injury there is considerable variation in scar outcome, partially due to genetic factors. Scar vascularity is one characteristic that varies between individuals, and this study aimed to identify genetic variants contributing to different scar vascularity outcomes. An exome-wide array association study and gene pathway analysis was performed on a prospective cohort of 665 patients of European ancestry treated for burn injury, using their scar vascularity (SV) sub-score, part of the modified Vancouver Scar Scale (mVSS), as an outcome measure.

Development of a value-based healthcare burns core set for adult burn care.

Background: Value-based healthcare (VBHC) is increasingly implemented in healthcare worldwide. Transparent measurement of the outcomes most important and relevant to patients is essential in VBHC, which is supported by a core set of most important quality indicators and outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a VBHC-burns core set for adult burn patients.

Repeated freezing to very low temperatures does not impact the amount ejected from EpiPen® and Jext® adrenaline autoinjectors.

It has previously been shown that EpiPen® autoinjectors are likely to activate normally following up to five excursions to -25°C but data about the post-freezing performance of other brands of adrenaline autoinjectors has not previously been published. Additionally, conditions experienced by polar medics may be substantially colder than this and the performance of adrenaline autoinjectors following more extreme freeze-thaw cycles remains uncharacterised. Investigators in Antarctica and the United Kingdom performed laboratory testing on two brands of adrenaline autoinjector, EpiPen® and Jext® (12 devices of each type).

Living in Western Australia induces some physiological adaptations of seasonal acclimatisation in the surgical burns team.

Seasonal acclimatization is known to result in adaptations that can improve heat tolerance. Staff who operate on burn injuries are exposed to thermally stressful conditions and seasonal acclimatization may improve their thermoeffector responses during surgery. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the physiological and perceptual responses of staff who operate on burn injuries during summer and winter, to determine whether they become acclimatized to the heated operating theater.
