Optogenetics is defined as the combination of genetic and optical methods to induce or inhibit well-defined events in isolated cells, tissues, or animals. While optogenetics within ophthalmology has been primarily applied towards treating inherited retinal disease, there are a myriad of other applications that hold great promise for a variety of eye diseases including cellular regeneration, modulation of mitochondria and metabolism, regulation of intraocular pressure, and pain control. Supported by primary data from the authors' work with in vitro and in vivo applications, we introduce a novel approach to metabolic regulation, Opsins to Restore Cellular ATP (ORCA).

Recent research into how musicians coordinate their expressive timing, phrasing, articulation, dynamics, and other stylistic characteristics during performances has highlighted the role of predictive processes, as musicians must anticipate how their partners will play in order to be together. Several studies have used information flow techniques such as Granger causality to show that upcoming movements of a musician can be predicted from immediate past movements of fellow musicians. Methods: Three pediatric patients with RRD complicated by PVR in the setting of underlying atopic dermatitis and/or uveitis who were treated with a combination of vitreoretinal surgery and intraoperative intravitreal methotrexate (MTX) (40mg) infusion, followed by at least one injection of 200 μg of MTX into the silicone oil-filled vitreous cavity, are reported. In addition, the patients received short-term systemic immunosuppression with systemic (oral or subcutaneous 20 mg weekly MTX for 12 weeks) and/or steroids.

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and anxiety disorders (AnxD) are prevalent health concerns in clinical practice which frequently co-occur (AUD-AnxD) and compound one another. Concurrent AUD-AnxD poses a challenge for clinical management as approaches to treatment of one disorder may be ineffective or potentially counterproductive for the other disorder.
Case Presentation: We present the case of a middle-aged man with anxiety disorder, AUD, chronic pain, and gamma-hydroxybutyrate use in context of tapering prescribed benzodiazepines who experienced severe alcohol withdrawal episodes during a complicated course of repeated inpatient withdrawal management.
Background: In the context of critical bleeding and massive transfusion (CB/MT), little is known about the development of new red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies. We performed a retrospective, observational study to examine the frequency of RBC alloantibodies (pre-existent, anamnestic, or new) in patients with CB/MT, defined as transfusion of five or more RBC units in any 4-hour period, for any cause of CB.
Materials And Methods: Data on 2,585 New Zealand patients (date/time of MT initiation, demographic data, blood group, clinical context, and transfused RBCs) were obtained from the Australian and New Zealand Massive Transfusion Registry.

The NCATS Biomedical Data Translator project is working to federate autonomous reasoning agents and knowledge providers within a distributed system for answering translational questions. Within that project and the broader field, there is a need for a framework that can efficiently and reproducibly build an integrated, standards-compliant, and comprehensive biomedical knowledge graph that can be downloaded in standard serialized form or queried via a public application programming interface (API).

Aim: To investigate the level of moral distress affecting advanced practice nurses (APNs) in the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ocular drug delivery has been significantly advanced for not only pharmaceutical compounds, such as steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, immune modulators, antibiotics, and so forth, but also for the rapidly progressed gene therapy products. For conventional non-gene therapy drugs, appropriate surgical approaches and releasing systems are the main deliberation to achieve adequate treatment outcomes, whereas the scope of "drug delivery" for gene therapy drugs further expands to transgene construct optimization, vector selection, and vector engineering. The eye is the particularly well-suited organ as the gene therapy target, owing to multiple advantages.
