Article Synopsis
  • In a study of patients aged 60 and older with patent foramen ovale (PFO) and cryptogenic stroke from South Korea, researchers aimed to determine if PFO closure helps reduce the risk of recurrent strokes compared to medical therapy alone.
  • The study included 437 patients, with 37% undergoing PFO closure; results showed that PFO closure significantly lowered the risk of subsequent ischemic strokes or TIAs over a follow-up period of about 3.9 years.
  • The findings suggest that elderly patients with high-risk PFO have a substantial recurrence rate of strokes, which PFO closure can effectively reduce.

This study aimed to compare and evaluate the efficacy of the blood pressure (BP) control and cholesterol-lowering effects and safety of combination therapy with telmisartan, rosuvastatin, and ezetimibe versus rosuvastatin and ezetimibe double therapy or telmisartan single therapy in dyslipidemia patients with hypertension. After a wash-out/therapeutic lifestyle change period of ≥4 weeks, a total of 100 eligible patients were randomized and received one of three treatments for 8 weeks: (1) telmisartan 80 mg/rosuvastatin 20 mg/ezetimibe 10 mg (TRE), (2) rosuvastatin 20 mg/ezetimibe 10 mg (RE), or (3) telmisartan 80 mg (T). The primary endpoint was the efficacy evaluation of TRE by comparing changes in mean sitting systolic blood pressure (msSBP) and mean percentage change in low-density lipoprotein-C (LDL-C) from baseline after 8 weeks of treatment.

Background: Hypovolemic shock can lead to life-threatening organ dysfunction, and adequate fluid administration is a fundamental therapy. Traditionally, parameters such as vital signs, central venous pressure, and urine output have been used to estimate intravascular volume. Recently, pulse pressure variation (PPV) and non-invasive cardiac monitoring devices have been introduced.

Background: Several studies have shown that high plasma lipoprotein(a) concentrations are associated with an increased risk of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Thus, Lp(a) has emerged as a new therapeutic target. Circulating proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors are new lipid-lowering agents that reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol as well as Lp(a).

  • Da-Chai-Hu-Tang (DCHT) is a herbal extract that shows promise in reducing triglyceride (TG) levels, previously demonstrated in animal studies and small human trials.
  • A 12-week study evaluated DCHT's effectiveness and safety in high-risk patients on statins, who continued to experience elevated TG levels (200-500 mg/dL).
  • Both DCHT and OMEGA3 significantly reduced TG levels without serious side effects, with DCHT's effectiveness being comparable to that of OMEGA3.

In this study, we attempted to determine the effects of acupuncture on cardiac remodeling and atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence rates in patients with AF after electrical cardioversion (EC). We randomly assigned 44 patients with persistent AF to an acupuncture group or a sham acupuncture group. An electroacupuncture treatment session was administered once weekly for 12 weeks at four acupuncture points (left PC5, PC6, ST36, and ST37).

This study was designed to determine the efficacy of a new oral anticoagulant (NOAC) therapy for the prevention of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis progression in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Sixty-five AF patients with a CHA2DS2-VASc score ≥2 without previous history of cardiovascular disease were registered and randomly assigned to either an NOAC group (dabigatran or rivaroxaban) or the warfarin group. Reactive hyperemia peripheral arterial tonometry (RH-PAT) measurements reflecting endothelial function were taken using Endo-PAT2000.

Purpose: Residual cardiovascular risk in patients with hypertriglyceridemia, despite optimal low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels being achieved with intensive statin treatment, is a global health issue. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and tolerability of treatment with a combination of high-dose atorvastatin/Ω-3 fatty acid compared to atorvastatin + placebo in patients with hypertriglyceridemia who did not respond to statin treatment.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients who had residual hypertriglyceridemia after a 4-week run-in period of atorvastatin treatment were randomly assigned to receive UI-018 (fixed-dose combination atorvastatin/Ω-3 fatty acid 40 mg/4 g) or atorvastatin 40 mg + placebo (control).

The anti-cancer agent doxorubicin (DOX) has high cardiotoxicity that is linked to DOX-mediated increase in oxidative stress, mitochondrial iron overload, DNA damage, autophagy, necrosis, and apoptosis, all of which are also associated with secondary tumorigenicity. This limits the clinical application of DOX therapies. Previous studies have attributed DOX-mediated cardiotoxicity to mitochondrial iron accumulation and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which seem to be independent of its anti-tumor DNA damaging effects.

Background: Doxorubicin (DOX) administration decreases cardiac soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) activity. We hypothesized that bypassing impaired NO-sGC-cGMP pathway resulting from the activation of oxidized and heme-free soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) could be a therapeutic target for DOX-mediated cardiomyopathy (DOX-CM). The present study investigated the therapeutic roles and mechanism of BAY60-2770, an activator of oxidized sGC, in alleviating DOX-CM.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to understand how intraplaque neovascularization (IPN) in carotid plaques predicts cardiovascular risks in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • - Researchers examined 217 CAD patients using contrast-enhanced ultrasonography to assess the presence of IPN, finding that although IPN was associated with increased plaque thickness, it didn't significantly predict major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
  • - Key findings indicated that while IPN patients had thicker plaques, the only strong predictor of MACE was the left ventricular mass index (LVMI), showing that traditional clinical factors were more reliable than IPN in assessing cardiovascular outcomes.

Background And Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with cardiac and arterial damage and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to determine whether coronary flow reserve (CFR), which represents microvascular dysfunction, might be associated with the ventricular-vascular coupling index (VVI), which represents the afterload-adjusted contractility in patients with OSA.

Methods: We enrolled 281 patients (257 males; mean age, 43±11 years) with newly diagnosed OSA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between P2Y12 reaction unit (PRU) and hemoglobin (Hb) levels in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) compared to patients with normal kidney function.
  • In normal function patients, Hb levels are inversely correlated with PRU, but this correlation is absent in CKD patients on HD.
  • Despite lower Hb levels in HD patients, their PRU was significantly higher than that of the control group, indicating that Hb does not play a critical role in determining PRU levels in this population.

Semiconductor devices rely on the charge and spin of electrons, but there is another electronic degree of freedom called pseudospin in a two-level quantum system such as a crystal consisting of two sublattices. A potential way to exploit the pseudospin of electrons in pseudospintronics is to find quantum matter with tunable and sizeable pseudospin polarization. Here, we propose a bipolar pseudospin semiconductor, where the electron and hole states have opposite net pseudospin polarization.
