Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to create and validate dementia risk prediction models for individuals in mid- and late-life, utilizing easily obtainable data from primary care settings.
  • Researchers analyzed over 6.6 million individuals aged 40 and above from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database to identify potential predictors of dementia.
  • The developed models indicated that modifiable risk factors significantly impact dementia risk, particularly in mid-life, suggesting that addressing these factors early could help reduce future dementia cases.

Background: Traditional cardiovascular disease risk prediction models generate a combined risk assessment for myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke (IS), which may inadequately reflect the distinct etiologies and disparate risk factors of MI and IS. We aim to develop prediction models that separately estimate the risks of MI and IS.

Methods: Our analysis included 6,242,404 individuals over 40 years old who participated in a cardiovascular health screening examination in 2009.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the relationship between spinal cord injury (SCI) and the risk of Parkinson's disease (PD), which has not been clearly defined before.
  • Using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service, researchers compared 7,182 SCI patients to 24,844 matched controls over a mean follow-up of 4.31 years.
  • Results indicate that SCI patients have a higher risk of developing PD, especially those with disabilities and injuries at the thoracic level, with cervical injuries posing a greater risk for those without disabilities.

Background: Lung cancer diagnosis affects an individual's quality of life as well as physical and emotional functioning. Information on survivorship care tends to be introduced at the end of treatment, but early intervention may affect posttreatment adjustment. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has explored the effect of early information intervention on the return to work, family, and societal roles of lung cancer survivors.
