Plasma-Enabled Graphene Quantum Dot Hydrogel-Magnesium Composites as Bioactive Scaffolds for In Vivo Bone Defect Repair.

Bioactive and mechanically stable metal-based scaffolds are commonly used for bone defect repair. However, conventional metal-based scaffolds induce nonuniform cell growth, limiting damaged tissue restoration. Here, we develop a plasma nanotechnology-enhanced graphene quantum dot (GQD) hydrogel-magnesium (Mg) composite scaffold for functional bone defect repair by integrating a bioresource-derived nitrogen-doped GQD (NGQD) hydrogel into the Mg ZK60 alloy.

Endothelial activation and stress index as a prognostic factor of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: the report from the nationwide multi-center Thai Lymphoma Study Group.

Several prognostic models have been introduced to predict outcomes of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Endothelial activation and stress index (EASIX) is a surrogate of endothelial dysfunction which has been shown to predict outcomes of patients with various hematologic malignancies. However, the prognostic implication of EASIX for DLBCL is limited and warrants exploration.

DARESOME enables concurrent profiling of multiple DNA modifications with restriction enzymes in single cells and cell-free DNA.

5-Methylcytosine (5mC) and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) are the most abundant DNA modifications that have important roles in gene regulation. Detailed studies of these different epigenetic marks aimed at understanding their combined effects and dynamic interconversion are, however, hampered by the inability of current methods to simultaneously measure both modifications, particularly in samples with limited quantities. We present DNA analysis by restriction enzyme for simultaneous detection of multiple epigenomic states (DARESOME), an assay based on modification-sensitive restriction digest and sequential tag ligation that can concurrently perform quantitative profiling of unmodified cytosine, 5mC, and 5hmC in CCGG sites genome-wide.

Advances and Challenges in Trials of Local Therapy for Patients With Oligometastatic or Oligoprogressive Disease.

The paradigm of oligometastatic disease (OMD), characterized by a limited number of metastases potentially amenable to local therapies, presents unique opportunities and challenges in clinical trial design and implementation. Although local ablative therapies, such as stereotactic body radiation therapy, have shown promise in improving outcomes for patients with OMD, there is a lack of large-scale randomized phase III trials supporting their widespread use. This paper outlines the key challenges in trial design and implementation in the oligometastatic setting, including appropriate patient selection, the definition of the oligometastatic state, trial design considerations, endpoint selection, and logistical considerations related to enrollment and follow-up.

Psychosocial risk factors and cognitive decline in people living with HIV: results from the Malaysian HIV and aging (MHIVA) study.

HIV-associated mortality has improved with the advent of antiretroviral therapy, yet neurocognitive decline persists. We assessed the association between psychosocial risk factors and cognitive function among Malaysian PLWH. Data of virally suppressed PLWH (n = 331) on stable ART, from the Malaysian HIV and Aging study was assessed.

MicroRNAs-associated with FOXO3 in cellular senescence and other stress responses.

FOXO3 is a member of the FOXO transcription factor family and is known for regulating cellular survival in response to stress caused by various external and biological stimuli. FOXO3 decides cell fate by modulating cellular senescence, apoptosis and autophagy by transcriptional regulation of genes involved in DNA damage response and oxidative stress resistance. These cellular processes are tightly regulated physiologically, with FOXO3 acting as the hub that integrates signalling networks controlling them.

Rise in intraocular pressure with elevator travel in post-vitrectomy patients.

To evaluate the impact of elevator travel on intraocular pressure after vitreoretinal surgery with gas tamponade. Patients undergoing pars plana vitreoretinal surgery with and without gas insertion were recruited on post-operative day 1. All intraocular pressures were measured three times by Tono-Pen AVIA (Reichert, USA) on the fourth floor and, after rapid ascent in an elevator, on the 12th floor of the hospital.

Longitudinal high-dimensional analysis identifies immune features associating with response to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy.

Response to immunotherapy widely varies among cancer patients and identification of parameters associating with favourable outcome is of great interest. Here we show longitudinal monitoring of peripheral blood samples of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients undergoing anti-PD1 therapy by high-dimensional cytometry by time of flight (CyTOF) and Meso Scale Discovery (MSD) multi-cytokines measurements. We find that higher proportions of circulating CD8 and of CD8CD101TIM3 (CCT T) subsets significantly correlate with poor clinical response to immune therapy.

Increased histological severity and chronicity of interface inflammation in anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis-A comparative dermatopathological analysis.

Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) dermatomyositis is characterized by serological detection of anti-MDA5 antibody and rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease. In this study, the largest cohort of skin biopsies to date of anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis was reviewed and compared with cases of dermatomyositis with negative serology. Findings contribute to the histological diagnosis and evaluation of the severity of cutaneous inflammation in anti-MDA5 dermatomyositis.

Antidiabetic effect of Ardisia elliptica extract and its mechanisms of action in STZ-NA-induced diabetic rat model via H-NMR-based metabolomics.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Ardisia elliptica Thunb. (AE) (Primulaceae) is a medicinal plant found in the Malay Peninsula and has been traditionally used to treat diabetes. However, limited studies to date in providing scientific evidence to support the antidiabetic efficacy of this plant by in-vitro and in-vivo models.

A Rare Case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Bile Duct.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the biliary tract is a rare disease, comprising just 2% of all biliary malignancies. The exact etiology is poorly understood but believed to be secondary to chronic inflammation. We present a case of a patient with recurrent cholecystitis and cholangitis who developed invasive biliary squamous cell carcinoma.

Intensive care unit nurses' perceptions of debriefing after critical incidents: A qualitative descriptive study.

Background: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses are exposed to critical incidents daily at their workplace, which may have long-term physical and psychological impacts. Despite the growing evidence supporting clinical debriefing in health care to prevent these impacts, a scarcity of literature exists to support its use in the adult intensive care setting.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to explore nurses' perceptions of clinical debriefing after critical incidents in an adult ICU.

Semantic Segmentation of Gastric Polyps in Endoscopic Images Based on Convolutional Neural Networks and an Integrated Evaluation Approach.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have received increased attention in endoscopic images due to their outstanding advantages. Clinically, some gastric polyps are related to gastric cancer, and accurate identification and timely removal are critical. CNN-based semantic segmentation can delineate each polyp region precisely, which is beneficial to endoscopists in the diagnosis and treatment of gastric polyps.

Exception points for liver transplantation: A Canadian review.

Background: Exception points for liver transplant (LT) allocation are used to account for mortality risk not reflected by scoring systems such as the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease with sodium (MELD-Na). Currently, there is no formal policy regarding exception points in Canada, and differences across the country are not well understood. As such, a review of the criteria and exception points granted throughout the country for LT was conducted.

Studies on how the form versus function aspect of tone and intonation is processed by autistic individuals have mainly focused on speakers of non-tonal languages (e.g., English) with equivocal results.

Outcome of Absence Epilepsy With Onset at 8-11 Years of Age: Watershed Ages When Syndromes Overlap.

Absence seizures occur in various epilepsy syndromes, including childhood and juvenile absence epilepsy and juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. When children present with absence seizures at ages when syndromes overlap, initial syndrome designation is not always possible, making early prognostication challenging. For these children, the study objective is to determine clinical and initial electroencephalograph (EEG) findings to predict the development of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, which is a factor that affects outcome.

Unusual presentation of lung carcinoma with pituitary metastasis: a challenging diagnosis and sodium management dilemmas.

Summary: Pituitary metastasis (PM) is a rare complication of an advanced malignancy. Albeit rare, PM can be more detected and achieve a longer survival rate through frequent neuroimaging and newer oncology therapies. Lung cancer is the most frequent primary site, followed by breast and kidney cancers.

Protocol for a mixed-methods randomised controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of a dyadic expressive arts-based intervention in improving the psychosocial well-being of children with intellectual disability in special schools and their mothers.

Introduction: Mothers of children with intellectual disability (ID) are often distressed because of intensive workloads and difficulties in communicating with their children. Given the interdependence between the psychosocial well-being of such dyads, interventions that promote parent-child relationships and mutual communication would be beneficial. Arts provide alternative avenues for expression and offer an imaginative and playful environment for discovering new communication strategies.

The Use of the Oxygenation Stretch Index to Predict Outcomes in Mechanically Ventilated Patients With COVID-19 ARDS.

Background: In ARDS caused by COVID-19 pneumonia, appropriate adjustment of physiologic parameters based on lung stretch or oxygenation may optimize the ventilatory strategy. This study aims to describe the prognostic performance on 60-d mortality of single and composite respiratory variables in subjects with COVID-19 ARDS who are on mechanical ventilation with a lung-protective strategy, including the oxygenation stretch index combining oxygenation and driving pressure (ΔP).

Methods: This single-center observational cohort study enrolled 166 subjects on mechanical ventilation and diagnosed with COVID-19 ARDS.
