Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the connection between self-discrepancy (the gap between one's ideals and actual self) and mental health in young people, focusing on how resilience affects this relationship.
  • - Data from 1,144 participants showed that greater self-discrepancies led to higher depressive and anxiety symptoms, but these links were no longer significant when considering resilience levels.
  • - Resilience acts as a mediator rather than a moderator in this context, meaning it influences the extent to which self-discrepancy affects mental health, especially in individuals facing recent stressful life events.

Aim: Many young people with mental health problems refuse to seek help because of stigma and leave the problem untreated. Previous research suggests that contact interventions with education could improve the stigma of mental illness in young people, thereby encouraging help-seeking in distress. The current study examined the effectiveness of a multifaceted programme, the Mindshift educational networking programme (MENP), in promoting a positive mental health culture in Hong Kong secondary schools.
