Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) typically spreads locally but rarely metastasizes systemically, prompting research into the molecular mechanisms that prevent its spread outside the brain.
  • In experiments using mouse models, patient-derived GBM cells caused spontaneous lung metastasis in one type of mouse, indicating that the absence of natural killer (NK) cell activity may facilitate this process.
  • The study suggests that enhancing NK cell activity could serve as a potential immunotherapy for GBM, as these cells can induce cell death in GBM cells and reduce the chance of systemic metastasis.

An unfortunate consequence of improvements in the treatments of advanced primary cancers is the concurrent increase of metastatic brain tumors. Despite of unfavorable clinical prognosis, radiation therapy is still the only viable treatment option for brain metastases. Expression of c-Met induces cell migration and invasion in many cancers, which are indispensable steps for metastasis.
