Area-selective deposition (ASD) based on self-aligned technology has emerged as a promising solution for resolving misalignment issues during ultrafine patterning processes. Despite its potential, the problems of area-selectivity losing beyond a certain thickness remain critical in ASD applications. This study reports a novel approach to sustain the area-selectivity of Ir films as the thickness increases.

Krabbe disease (KD) is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder caused by deficiency of the galactocerebrosidase (GALC) due to variants in the GALC gene. Epitaxial Growth of β-GaO Thin Films on Si with YSZ Buffer Layer.

We report the epitaxial growth of (2̅01)-oriented β-GaO thin films on a (001) Si substrate using the pulsed laser deposition technique employing epitaxial yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layers. Epitaxial β-GaO thin films possess a biaxial compressive strain on YSZ single-crystal substrates while they exhibit a biaxial tensile strain on YSZ-buffered Si substrates. Post-annealing improves the crystalline quality of β-GaO thin films.

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on emergency department length of stay and clinical outcomes of patients with severe pneumonia: A single-center observational study.

We examined the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the emergency department length of stay (EDLOS) and clinical outcomes of patients with severe pneumonia admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) through the emergency department (ED). This single-center retrospective observational study included adult patients with pneumonia admitted to the ICU through the ED between January and December 2019 (pre-pandemic) and between March 2020 and February 2021 (during-pandemic). We compared and analyzed the EDLOS by dividing it into pre-, mid-, and post-EDLOS and in-hospital mortality of patients with pneumonia admitted to the ICU according to the time of ED visits before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Distinctive optical transitions of tunable multicolor carbon dots.

Three types of carbon dots (CDs) are synthesized from isomers of phenylenediamine to develop multicolor nanomaterials with low toxicity, high stability, and high quantum yield. The distinctive electronic structures of CDs lead to the characteristic optical transitions, such as three colors of blue, green, and red, which are primarily attributed to the difference in configurations, despite the similar basic structures of conjugated systems. The excitation-independent emission and the single exponential decay of CDs indicate the single chromophore-like nature in each type of CD.

Food and Gut Microbiota-Derived Metabolites in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Diet and lifestyle are crucial factors that influence the susceptibility of humans to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Personalized diet patterns chronically affect the composition and activity of microbiota in the human gut; consequently, nutrition-related dysbiosis exacerbates NAFLD via the gut-liver axis. Recent advances in diagnostic technology for gut microbes and microbiota-derived metabolites have led to advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of NAFLD.

Preparation of adsorptive polyethyleneimine/polyvinyl chloride electrospun nanofiber membrane: Characterization and application.

Landfilling and burning plastic waste, especially waste polyvinyl chloride (PVC), can produce highly toxic and carcinogenic by-products that threaten the ecosystem and human health. However, there is still a lack of proper methods for waste PVC recycling. Therefore, developing feasible ways for waste PVC recovery is urgently needed.

Tibialis Anterior Muscle: Pedicled Bone Graft for Defect of the Tibia.

Purpose: To report the result of the bone graft retrograde pedicled with the tibialis anterior muscle belly for the treatment of bone defect of tibia.

Methods: Between 2017 and 2020, the bone graft pedicled with the tibialis anterior muscle was applied for the treatment of 11 patients with a cortical defect and nonunion of the tibia due to trauma and one patient with segmental bone defect caused by tramatic osteomyelitis. The tibialis anterior has the largest muscle belly, but has not been commonly used due to functional disability following use as transposition muscle flap.

Comparison of Radiological and Clinical Outcomes in Patients Treated with Standard Plating versus Intramedullary Nailing in Distal Tibial Fracture.

Objective: To evaluate clinical and radiological outcomes including hindfoot alignment after plate vs intramedullary nailing (IMN) for distal tibia fracture and to define radiologic parameters that influence changes in hindfoot alignment.

Methods: Among 92 patients with distal tibia metaphyseal fractures treated from 2002 to 2015, 39 cases of intramedullary nailing and 53 cases of standard plate osteosynthesis were performed. Union rate and complication rate were compared in both groups.

Surgical Treatment Using Sinus Tarsi Approach with Anterolateral Fragment Open-Door Technique in Sanders Type 3 and 4 Displaced Intraarticular Calcaneal Fracture.

Although various outcomes of the sinus tarsi approach have been reported, these are limited to the Sanders type 2 displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures (DIACF) because of the limited visibility of the posterior facet joint. In this study we aimed to (1) introduce a sinus tarsi approach combined with an anterolateral fragment open-door technique that enables adequate visibility of the innermost and middle portion of the posterior facet joint, and (2) evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes of the patients treated with that technique. This is a retrospective case-series study performed on medical records of 25 patients who presented with the Sanders type 3 or 4 DIACF and were treated with the sinus tarsi approach.

Diurnal Temperature Ranges in Relation to Lower Limb Amputation Rate of Diabetic Foot in South Korea: A Population Based Nationwide Study.

We aimed to investigate the region-specific association between DTR and the amputation rate of diabetic foot in Korean national-wide data.
