Time-dependent prognostic effect of high sensitivity C-reactive protein with statin therapy in acute myocardial infarction.

Background: Elevated high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has prognostic value for future cardiovascular events. This study aimed to ascertain a valid prognostic time-period for predicting cardiovascular outcome based on baseline hs-CRP in AMI patients undergoing successful PCI on statin therapy.

Methods: Overall, 4410 AMI patients were enrolled from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction-National Institutes of Health (KAMIR-NIH) registry.

Effect of prostate gland weight on the surgical and oncological outcomes of extraperitoneal robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

Background: Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is performed by urologists as one of the surgical procedures for treating prostate cancer. Numerous studies have been published with regard to the impact of prostate weight on performing RARP but were limited by the insufficient number of patients and use of the transperitoneal approach. This study aimed to determine the effect of prostate gland weight on the surgical and short-term oncological outcomes of RARP using the extraperitoneal approach.

Clinical significance of multiparametric MRI and PSA density as predictors of residual tumor (pT0) following radical prostatectomy for T1a-T1b (incidental) prostate cancer.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate predictors of residual tumor and clinical prognosis in T1a-T1b (incidental) prostate cancer by analysis of specimens from men undergoing surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of incidental prostate cancer patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy. Patients whose tumor statuses were further confirmed by prostate biopsy, or who had used androgen deprivation therapy before radical prostatectomy, were excluded.

Immunomodulatory Effects of Monascus spp.-Fermented Sacccharina japonica Extracts on the Cytokine Gene Expression of THP-1 Cells.

The immunomodulatory effects of Monascus-fermented Saccharina japonica extract on anti- and pro-inflammatory cytokines gene expression of THP-1 cells were evaluated. Extracts of fermented samples showed higher phenolic, flavonoid, protein, and reducing sugar contents than unfermented one. Fermented samples were rich in many bioactive compounds determined by GC-MS analyses and showed cell viability greater than 85% in MTS assay.

Radiation Therapy for Anal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Multicenter Study.

Aim: To analyze the treatment outcomes, patterns of failures and prognostic factors for patients with anal cancer treated with radiotherapy (RT).

Materials And Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2015, 83 patients with anal squamous cell carcinoma were treated with definitive RT. The median RT dose applied to the primary carcinoma site was 55 (range=45-64) Gy.

We investigated the prognostic ability of preoperative monocyte-lymphocyte ratio for oncologic outcomes in non-metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma of ≤7 cm on preoperative computed tomography (CT).We retrospectively reviewed 1637 patients who underwent radical or partial nephrectomy for solid renal masses ≤7 cm (2005-2014). We included 1137 patients after exclusion of benign pathology, non-clear cell, morbidity affecting inflammatory markers, metastasis, regional lymphadenopathy, positive margin, and follow up <12 months.

Impact of chronic total occlusion lesion length on six-month angiographic and 2-year clinical outcomes.

Background: Successful management of chronic total occlusion (CTO)by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is known to be associated with better clinical outcomes than failed PCI. However, whether angiographic and clinical outcomes following PCI for long CTO lesions differ from those following PCI for short CTO lesions in the drug eluting stent (DES) era remains unknown. We therefore investigated whether CTO lesion length can significantly influence6-month angiographic and 2-year clinical outcomes following successful CTO PCI.

Maternal fruit and vegetable or vitamin C consumption during pregnancy is associated with fetal growth and infant growth up to 6 months: results from the Korean Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) cohort study.

Background: Based on data obtained from pregnant women who participated in the Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) study in South Korea, we aimed to determine whether maternal intake of fruits and vegetables or vitamin C is associated with fetal and infant growth.

Methods: A total of 1138 Korean pregnant women at 12-28 weeks gestation with their infants were recruited as study participants for the MOCEH. Intake of fruits and vegetables or vitamin C during pregnancy was assessed by a 1-day 24-h recall method.

Characterization of a Bacillus sp. isolated from fermented food and its synbiotic effect with barley β-glucan as a biocontrol agent in the aquaculture industry.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate Bacillus sp. SJ-10, isolated from traditional Korean seafood, as a probiotic. Strain SJ-10 was demonstrated to be safe, on the basis of in vitro tests confirming the absence of cytotoxicity, hemolysis, and genes with toxigenic potential, and was susceptible to antibiotics.

Management of postoperative ileus after robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy.

To compare different postoperative management methods on the recovery of bowel function after robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP).This is a prospective study of 716 patients who underwent RALP at Severance Hospital in Seoul, South Korea, between March 2017 and February 2018. Instructions for the different postoperative management methods (mobilization, abdominal massage, hot pack therapy, and gum chewing) were presented to patients, who subsequently reported when these activities were performed as well as the time to first flatus on a designated form.

Clinical significance and predictors of oncologic outcome after radical prostatectomy for invisible prostate cancer on multiparametric MRI.

Cytoprotective effect of 2-carbomethoxy-2,3-epoxy-3-prenyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (CMEP-NQ) is mediated by the inhibition of BAK-dependent mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.

The inhibitory mechanism of 2-carbomethoxy-2,3-epoxy-3-prenyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (CMEP-NQ) against apoptosis induced by the microtubule-damaging agents (MDAs), nocodazole (NOC) and 2-methoxyestradiol (2-MeO-E2), or a DNA-damaging agent (DDA), camptothecin (CPT) were investigated in human Jurkat T cell clones (J/Neo and J/BCL-XL cells). Treatment of J/Neo cells with NOC, 2-MeO-E2, or CPT caused cytotoxicity and apoptotic DNA fragmentation but these events were significantly attenuated in the presence of CMEP-NQ. Although not only MDA (NOC or 2-MeO-E2)-induced mitotic arrest, CDK1 activation, and BCL-2, BCL-XL and BIM phosphorylation, but also DDA (CPT)-induced S-phase arrest and ATM-CHK1/CHK2-p53 pathway activation were not or were barely affected in the presence of CMEP-NQ, the levels of anti-apoptotic BAG3 and MCL-1, which were markedly downregulated after MDA- or DDA-treatment, were rather elevated by CMEP-NQ.

Two-photon microscopy of Paneth cells in the small intestine of live mice.

Paneth cells are one of the principal epithelial cell types in the small intestine, located at the base of intestinal crypts. Paneth cells play key roles in intestinal host-microbe homeostasis via granule secretion, and their dysfunction is implicated in pathogenesis of several diseases including Crohn's disease. Despite their physiological importance, study of Paneth cells has been hampered by the limited accessibility and lack of labeling methods.

We report the copper-catalyzed stereoselective addition of in situ generated chiral boron-α-alkyl intermediates to various aldehydes including α,β-unsaturated aldehydes under mild conditions. This tandem and multicomponent method facilitated the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched 1,2-hydroxyboronates bearing contiguous stereocenters in good yield with high diastereo- and enantioselectivity up to a ratio greater than 98:2. In particular, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes were successfully used as electrophiles in Cu-H catalysis through 1,2-addition without significant reduction.
