Replicability, Repeatability, and Long-term Reproducibility of Cerebellar Morphometry.

To identify robust and reproducible methods of cerebellar morphometry that can be used in future large-scale structural MRI studies, we investigated the replicability, repeatability, and long-term reproducibility of three fully automated software tools: FreeSurfer, CEREbellum Segmentation (CERES), and automatic cerebellum anatomical parcellation using U-Net with locally constrained optimization (ACAPULCO). Replicability was defined as computational replicability, determined by comparing two analyses of the same high-resolution MRI data set performed with identical analysis software and computer hardware. Repeatability was determined by comparing the analyses of two MRI scans of the same participant taken during two independent MRI sessions on the same day for the Kirby-21 study.

Eliciting interval beliefs: An experimental study.

In this paper we study the interval scoring rule as a mechanism to elicit subjective beliefs under varying degrees of uncertainty. In our experiment, subjects forecast the termination time of a time series to be generated from a given but unknown stochastic process. Subjects gradually learn more about the underlying process over time and hence the true distribution over termination times.

Lessons learned after three years of legalized, recreational marijuana: The Colorado experience.

In November 2012 Colorado voters approved legalized recreational marijuana. On January 1, 2014 Colorado became the first state to allow legal sales of non-medical marijuana for adults over the age of 21. Since that time, the state has been monitoring potential impacts on population health.

On January 1, 2014, Colorado became the first state in the nation to sell legal recreational marijuana for adult use. As a result, Colorado has had to carefully examine potential population health and safety impacts as well as the role of public health in response to legalization. We have discussed an emerging public health framework for legalized recreational marijuana.

Phonological complexity in school-aged children who stutter and exhibit a language disorder.

Purpose: The Index of Phonological Complexity and the Word Complexity Measure are two measures of the phonological complexity of a word. Other phonological measures such as phonological neighborhood density have been used to compare stuttered versus fluent words. It appears that in preschoolers who stutter, the length and complexity of the utterance is more influential than the phonetic features of the stuttered word.

Prevalence of vocal fry in young adult male American English speakers.

The purpose of this study was to assess possible gender differences in the prevalence of vocal fry in the voices of young male college students. Results were compared with previously published findings derived from a matched sample of female speakers. Thirty-four male college students, native American English speakers, produced speech samples in two speaking conditions: (1) sustained isolated vowel /a/ and (2) reading task.

Coexistence of stuttering and disordered phonology in young children.

The purpose of the present study was to assess differences in stuttering, phonological, and diadochokinetic behaviors in young children who exhibit both stuttering and disordered phonology and children who exhibit only one of the disorders. Subjects were 21 male children (aged 4 to 6 years), representing three groups of seven children each: (a) stuttering and normal phonological abilities (S+NP), (b) stuttering and disordered phonology (S+DP), and (c) normal fluency and disordered phonology (NF+DP). Stuttering behavior was assessed during a 30-minute conversational speech task; phonological behavior was assessed during a 162 item picture-naming task; and diadochokinetic abilities were assessed during bi- and multisyllable productions.

Frequent school-based clinic utilization: a comparative profile of problems and service needs.

Sample: Of the 1413 students enrolled in a Denver school-based clinic (DSBC) during the 1989-1990 school year, frequent clinic users (n = 73) were defined as those who visited the clinic 15 times or more (range, 15-72 visits per year). Average users (n = 82) were defined as students who visited the clinic three times during the year (the mean and median number of visits per student enrolled).

The emerging phonological system of an autistic child.

This case report provides a detailed phonological investigation of the speech of an 8-year-old autistic boy. Three approaches were used for elicitation of speech: delayed imitation, object naming, and a connected speech sample. Phonetic inventory analysis revealed that stops, nasals, and glides were generally present, whereas fricatives, affricates, and the liquid /r/ were absent.

Comorbidity of stuttering and disordered phonology in young children.

Young stutterers frequently exhibit concomitant speech and/or language disorders. The co-occurrence of these disorders is, however, not yet well understood. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of "comorbidity" as it relates to the field of speech-language pathology: specifically, to discuss comorbidity (coexistence) of stuttering and disordered phonology in young children.

Diagnosis and management of traumatic ventricular septal defect.

Four cases of ventricular septal defect secondary to stab wounds of the heart are presented. One of three patients arriving at the Emergency Department in shock and who were resuscitated required an emergency thoracotomy. These patients had immediate repair of their external cardiac wounds in the Operating Room.

Transfemoral removal of a chronically implanted pacemaker lead: report of a case.

A transfemoral angiographic technique was used to remove a chronically implanted, infected pacemaker wire that could not be withdrawn by using direct traction. The case and a description of the technique are detailed, and the principles of nonsurgical extraction of chronically implanted pacemaker wires are discussed.

Markedness analysis of consonant error productions in apraxia of speech.

This study applied a markedness analysis of consonant error productions to three adult aphasic patients with apraxia of speech. Single consonants and initial consonant clusters were investigated, employing both naming tasks and spontaneous narrative tasks. Results showed that phonemes of lower complexity values tended to substitute for phonemes of higher complexity values more than the reverse, and successive attempts at self-correction tended to reveal a progression toward the target segment in terms of markedness complexity.

Hemostasis changes during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery.

A number of hemostasis parameters were studied in a total of 63 patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) for open heart surgery. In 33 patients fibrinogen, Factors II, V, VIII:C, X, XI, antithrombin, plasminogen, alpha 2-antiplasmin, and platelet counts were assayed before surgery, during maximal hypothermia, at the end of the bypass procedure, before and after protamine sulfate infusion, in the intensive care unit, and 48 hours postoperatively. All factors assayed decreased markedly when the patients were placed on the bypass machine, the drop fairly well paralleling the decrease in hematocrit.
