In this paper, we present a number of novel pure-carbon structures generated from cyclo[18]carbon. Due to the very high reactivity of cyclo[18]carbon, it is possible to link these molecules together to form bigger molecular systems. In our studies, we generated new structures containing 18, 36 and 72 carbon atoms.

Carbohydrates have quite complicated micro heterogenic structure which may undergo different structural transitions. Due to their extreme flexibility it is very difficult to investigate such structural changes experimentally. In these studies we want to predict what structural and conformational changes are possible in the carbohydrate glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor chain (GPI): the tetrasaccharide with the unique sequence Man-α(1 → 2)-Man-α(1 → 6)-Man-α(1 → 4)-GlcN-α.

Targeting pancreatic lipase and α-amylase by digestion-derived fractions of ethanolic-aqueous (60%, /) extract from fruit (CM) in relation to the control and prevention of metabolic disorders, including diabetes, was the first purpose of the present study. Taking into consideration the significance of bio-accessibility of compounds, we attempted to identify metabolites of CM after gastrointestinal digestion in vitro, as well as their kinetic changes upon gut microbiota treatment. The digestion of extract was simulated with digestive enzymes in vitro and human gut microbiota ex vivo (1 h, 3 h, 6 h, 24 h), followed by chromatographic analysis using the UHPLC-DAD-MS method.

It is much more difficult to find on the potential energy surface (PES) a transition state (TS) than a local minimum (LM). We propose a new methodology which makes this task much easier. Applying external forces to nuclei in a molecule we can locate on PES not just one particular TS but a number of consecutive transition states.

Fruits of and are representative plant materials traditionally used in Europe and Asia, respectively, in the treatment of diabetes and diabetes-related complications, which are often mediated by pathogenic inflammatory agents. Additionally, due to the fact of mutual infiltration of Asian and European medicines, the differentiation as well as standardization of traditional prescriptions seem to be crucial for ensuring the quality of traditional products. The objective of this study was a comparison of biological activity of extracts from fruits of and by an assessment of their effect on reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in human neutrophils as well as cytokines secretion both in neutrophils (tumor necrosis factor , TNF- ; interleukin 8, IL-8; interleukin 1, IL-1) and in human colon adenocarcinoma cell line Caco-2 (IL-8).

The data demonstrating a correlation between sonographic markers of malignancy of thyroid cancer (TC) and its genetic status are scarce. This study aimed to assess whether the addition of genetic analysis at the preoperative step of TC patients' stratification could aid their clinical management. The material consisted of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor fragments of 49 patients who underwent thyroidectomy during the early stages of papillary TC (PTC).

In this work, we studied, using computational methods, the protonation reactions of telomeric DNA fragments being due to interaction with carboxylated carbon nanotubes. The applied computational methodology is divided into two stages. (i) Using classical molecular dynamics, we generated states in which carboxyl groups are brought to the vicinity of nitrogen atoms within the cytosine rings belonging to the DNA duplex.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the effect of lithium carbonate on iodine uptake in hyperthyroid patients with low radioiodine uptake (RAIU) levels, comparing those who received lithium (Li(+)) to those who did not (Li(-)).
  • - Results showed that patients in the Li(+) group had higher initial levels of free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) at the start, but these levels decreased significantly after 24 hours to 1 month post-treatment.
  • - Lithium therapy resulted in a significant increase in RAIU across different time intervals, suggesting its potential role in improving the effectiveness of radioiodine therapy for these patients.

Certain ultrasound features are associated with an increased risk of thyroid malignancy. However, they were studied mainly in papillary thyroid cancers (PTCs); these results cannot be simply extrapolated for the differentiation of follicular thyroid adenomas and cancers (FTAs and FTCs). The aim of our study was to perform a meta-analysis to identify sonographic features suggesting malignancy in the case of follicular lesions, potentially differentiating FTA and FTC.

Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) and other risk stratification systems may improve ultrasound image interpretation. This prospective study aimed to compare the diagnostic performance of CAD and the European Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (EU-TIRADS) classification applied by physicians with S-Detect 2 software CAD based on Korean Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (K-TIRADS) and combinations of both methods (MODELs 1 to 5). In all, 133 nodules from 88 patients referred to thyroidectomy with available histopathology or with unambiguous results of cytology were included.

Specialized computational chemistry packages have permanently reshaped the landscape of chemical and materials science by providing tools to support and guide experimental efforts and for the prediction of atomistic and electronic properties. In this regard, electronic structure packages have played a special role by using first-principle-driven methodologies to model complex chemical and materials processes. Over the past few decades, the rapid development of computing technologies and the tremendous increase in computational power have offered a unique chance to study complex transformations using sophisticated and predictive many-body techniques that describe correlated behavior of electrons in molecular and condensed phase systems at different levels of theory.

Mycodextran-also known as nigeran-is an unbranched polysaccharide made of α-d-glucopyranose units alternatively connected by (1 → 3) and (1 → 4) glycosidic linkages produced intracellularly by Aspergillus niger and Penicillium crustosum. In this work we examine possible enforced conformational transitions in the glucopyranose rings in the nigeran oligosaccharide chains. In order to simulate such structural changes we used the Enforced Geometry Optimization (EGO) method.

The fruits of some species (dogwoods) are used in traditional medicine and considered potential anti-diabetic and hypolipemic agents. The aim of the study was to determine the ability of extracts from (CA), (CF), and (CS) to inhibit digestive enzymes namely -amylase, pancreatic lipase, and -glucosidase, as well as isolation of compounds from plant material with the strongest effect. In addition, the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of extracts from three dogwoods were compared with HPLC-DAD-MS/MS and DPPH scavenging assay, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to validate the EU-TIRADS classification system for assessing thyroid nodules by comparing scores obtained from ultrasound with histopathology results in a large patient group.
  • Out of 842 thyroid lesions analyzed, malignancies were more prevalent in higher EU-TIRADS categories, but many cancers, especially smaller ones, were not detected in lower categories, raising concerns about missed diagnoses.
  • The findings indicate moderate specificity with the EU-TIRADS system, suggesting that many malignant lesions would not have been biopsied due to their smaller size, particularly in the EU-TIRADS 3 and 4 categories.

The primary goal of this project was to evaluate the performance of the Standard and Enforced Geometry Optimization (SEGO) method which we have recently developed. The SEGO method has been designed for an automatic location of multiple minima on the molecular Potential Energy Surface (PES), and its usefulness has been demonstrated so far for three molecules only. In this project we applied the SEGO method to explore the 2-methylfuran (2MF) PES.
