Article Synopsis
  • The Sudden Oak Death Blitzes are annual citizen-led surveys mapping the spread of Sudden Oak Death (SOD) in northern California, which discovered possible symptoms in six rare manzanita species for the first time.
  • During the studies, symptoms such as branch cankers and canopy mortality were observed, and researchers confirmed through inoculation experiments that these species can host the SOD pathogen.
  • Additional manzanita species were later examined, showing varying susceptibility to the disease, with findings indicating that even low levels of spore production could lead to localized contagion, especially in wet conditions.

We present a novel trapping approach using filter paper in combination with a rapid molecular method to detect the presence of inoculum in the air.
