Objectives: Oral squamous cell carcinomas, and tongue malignancies in particular, are among the most common tumors of the oral cavity. Classification for therapeutic and prognostic purposes is routinely made using the tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) system; however, current definitions do not include tumor thickness. We therefore aimed to identify variables associated with survival, and to evaluate the correlation between tumor thickness and the occurrence of lymph node metastasis.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been identified as a key risk factor for a range of negative life outcomes, including delinquency. Much less is known about how exposure to negative experiences relates to continued offending among juvenile offenders. In this study, we examine the effect of ACEs on recidivism in a large sample of previously referred youth from the State of Florida who were followed for 1 year after participation in community-based treatment.

A unique single suture craniosynostosis case from the 9(th) century is presented in this paper. Although craniosynostosis is a fairly common pediatric anomaly nowadays, its occurrence in archaeological collections is an uncommon precedent. Since the diagnosis and treatment of premature cranial suture closure usually happens at an early age, evaluation of the whole developmental process is a rare opportunity.

Interest in a surgical career is declining among medical students, and many more need to commit themselves to becoming surgeons to cope with this. We have therefore developed a one-day practical lesson in surgical skills to find out whether a short course such as this can make students more enthusiastic about surgery, and about subsequently pursuing a career in one of its subspecialties. Fifty-four randomly-selected medical students did a one-day practical course in the skills required for maxillofacial surgical specialties.

We measured the motivation and interest of medical students in oral and maxillofacial surgery at a German university. After a detailed cost-benefit analysis of a course that used an ex-vivo animal model and active participation in the operating theatre, we measured changes in the students' interest in taking up a surgical specialty in the future. We found that practical experience could lower the expenses of the course by almost 70%.

In this ten-year retrospective study we were able to show that Maltese substance-misusing mothers (SMMs) have significantly different socio-biological characteristics from mothers in the general population which seem to impact on neonatal outcomes. Significant differences from the general population were noted in the SMM's age, age at first pregnancy, marital status, educational background, number of cigarettes smoked, number of offspring and weight gained in pregnancy. SMMs booked their pregnancy in hospital later than the general population.

Patient reported outcomes following head and neck cancer are of great importance, given the functional, psychological, and social impacts of the disease and its treatment. In addition, not only is the number of publications on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) increasing in a variety of specialties, but there is also a growing awareness of the potential role of HRQOL in practice. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the HRQOL of head and neck cancer patients following different oncologic interventions, using an internationally established test.

Background: Radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF) is one of the severe long-term side effects of radiation therapy (RT) with a crucial impact on the development of postoperative wound healing disorders (WHD). The grades of fibrosis vary between mild to severe depending on individual radiosensitivity. In this study, we have investigated the molecular pathways that influence RIF and have correlated data from immunohistochemistry (IHC) for von -Willebrand Factor (vWF) and from Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) concerning markers such as Transforming Growth Factor (TGF)-β 1, and vWF, with clinical data concerning the occurrence of WHD during follow-up.

Introduction: Intraoral soft tissue infections (OSTI) are a common problem in dentistry and oral surgery. These abscesses are mostly exacerbated dental infections (OIDC), and some emerge as postoperative infections (POI) after tooth extraction (OITR) or apicoectomy (OIRR). The main aim of this study was to compare OIDC with POI, especially looking at the bacteria involved.

Introduction: Advanced non-melanocytic skin cancer (NMSC) in the facial region causes extensive tissue loss, possibly coverable by local flaps. Remote free flaps are the reconstructive method of choice, despite disadvantages such as color and texture mismatch, and bulkiness with regard to facial skin.

Material And Methods: Post-ablative facial NMSC defects in four patients were reconstructed using remote free flaps, including radial forearm, scapular, parascapular, and anterolateral thigh flaps.

Introduction: The lack of surgeons will be a future major problem in patient care for multifaceted reasons. Niche specialties such as OMFS face an additional drawback because of the need for dual qualification. Special surgical training that gives students the opportunity to gain experience in the techniques of plastic-reconstructive surgery (PRS) has therefore been established to promote interest in OMFS.

In the current therapy of head and neck defects, surgical reconstruction with the aid of pedicle or free flaps is common practice. Suitable single flaps are available to solve most reconstructive challenges. However, reconstruction can become a problem in extensive mandibular defects, as they are often caused by large primary tumors or osteoradionecrosis.

Converting biomass to biofuels is a key strategy in substituting fossil fuels to mitigate climate change. Conventional strategies to convert lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol address the fermentation of cellulose-derived glucose. Here we used super-resolution fluorescence microscopy to uncover the nanoscale structure of cell walls in the energy crops maize and Miscanthus where the typical polymer cellulose forms an unconventional layered architecture with the atypical (1, 3)-β-glucan polymer callose.

Objectives: Infants of smoking (S) and substance misusing (SM) mothers have an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that infants of SM or S mothers compared with infants of non-SM, non-smoking mothers (controls) would have a poorer ventilatory response to hypoxia, which was particularly marked in the SM infants.

Design: Physiological study.

Background: Tissue glues are a useful tool for hemostasis and a potential tool for microvascular anastomosis. The hemostatic power and thrombotic risk of these surgical aids have been the subject of debate, but studies regarding thromboembolic risks of tissue glues are lacking.

Methods: The authors compared the thromboembolic risk of three different tissue glues (six interrupted sutures complemented with fibrin, FloSeal, or TachoSil) against a control group (12 interrupted sutures) in the aorta-filter model in the rat.

The subject of the presented study was to monitor and compare problems and outcomes of reconstructive surgery with microvascular free flaps in the head and neck region between groups of patients treated with perioperative antibiotics and a group of patients without antibiotics. Patients requiring oral reconstructive surgery following cancer resections with microvascular free flaps were prospectively evaluated (2007-2012). Antibiotic therapy was started 30 min before the operation and administered for 10 days.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is intrinsically resistant to most β-lactam antibiotics because of the constitutive expression of the blaC-encoded β-lactamase. This enzyme has extremely high activity against penicillins and cephalosporins, but weaker activity against carbapenems. The enzyme can be inhibited by clavulanate, avibactam, and boronic acids.

The erosive oral lichen planus (OLP) represents a management challenge to the clinician and can have debilitating consequences to patients' quality of life. The aims of this work were to determine the incidence of malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in patients undergoing traditional symptomatic treatments (oral salve containing lidocaine hydrochloride or systemic diclofenac) compared to patients that were managed with a defocused continuous CO2 laser beam. A total of 171 patients with histologically confirmed erosive OLP were included into this study.

The recurrence rate following the treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) by primary surgery is about 10%-26%. The earliest possible diagnosis of residual tumour, recurrence of local tumour disease, and subsequent metastasis is essential for an improvement of the overall survival and of the survival period for affected patients. No international consensus exists for a post-therapeutic surveillance schedule for OSCCs.

Perforator flaps are claimed to be a sign of major progress in head and neck reconstruction, but are they a further step up the reconstructive ladder? In this paper I provide a short summary of the development and current clinical use of perforator flaps in the head and neck, which is based on a presentation to the annual meeting of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2014. I will describe 4 flaps from the lower leg, which are useful specifically for covering intraoral defects, as examples. When we consider the spectrum of new donor sites, and the precision of flap design that is offered by perforator flaps, it becomes evident that the potential of this new technique has not yet been reached.

Objective: The use of methamphetamine (MA), a highly addictive stimulant, is rapidly increasing, with MA being widely abused as the scene drug "Crystal Meth" (CM). CM has been associated with severe oral health effects, resulting in so-called "Meth mouth". This term appeared for the first time in 2005 in the literature and describes the final complex of symptoms including rampant caries, periodontal diseases and excessive tooth wear.

Purpose: Women veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom [OEF/OIF]) have a moderately higher risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than male veterans. However, gender disparities in treatment engagement may prevent women veterans from initiating the care they need. Understanding gender differences in predictors of and barriers to treatment is essential to improving engagement and mental health outcomes.
