We aim to determine trends in discharge to care homes, to explore the characteristics of stroke survivors over time (1995-2018), and to identify the associations between these characteristics and discharge to care homes poststroke. Methods- Using data from the South London Stroke Register between 1995 and 2018, we estimated the proportions discharged to care homes and their characteristics over time, assessed by tests for trends.

The bay scallop (Mollusca: Bivalvia) has dozens of iridescent blue eyes that focus light using mirror-based optics. Here, we test the hypothesis that these eyes appear blue because of photonic nanostructures that preferentially scatter short-wavelength light. Using transmission electron microscopy, we found that the epithelial cells covering the eyes of have three distinct layers: an outer layer of microvilli, a middle layer of random close-packed nanospheres and an inner layer of pigment granules.

Collaborative design of a decision aid for stroke survivors with multimorbidity: a qualitative study in the UK engaging key stakeholders.

Objectives: Effective secondary stroke prevention strategies are suboptimally used. Novel development of interventions to enable healthcare professionals and stroke survivors to manage risk factors for stroke recurrence are required. A theoretically motivated method for automatically evaluating texts for gist inferences.

We developed a method to automatically assess texts for features that help readers produce gist inferences. Following fuzzy-trace theory, we used a procedure in which participants recalled events under gist or verbatim instructions. Applying Coh-Metrix, we analyzed written responses in order to create gist inference scores (GISs), or seven variables converted to Z scores and averaged, which assess the potential for readers to form gist inferences from observable text characteristics.

Usability of an Immersive Augmented Reality Based Telerehabilitation System with Haptics (ARTESH) for Synchronous Remote Musculoskeletal Examination.

This study describes the features and utility of a novel augmented reality based telemedicine system with haptics that allows the sense of touch and direct physical examination during a synchronous immersive telemedicine consultation and physical examination. The system employs novel engineering features: (a) a new force enhancement algorithm to improve force rendering and overcoming the "just-noticeable-difference" limitation; (b) an improved force compensation method to reduce the delay in force rendering; (c) use of the "haptic interface point" to reduce disparity between the visual and haptic data; and (d) implementation of efficient algorithms to process, compress, decompress, transmit and render 3-D tele-immersion data. Background: The benefit of statins on stroke incidence is well known. However, data on the relationship between pre- and post-stroke statin use, recurrence, and survival outcomes are limited. We aim to investigate the short- and long-term relationships between statin prescription, stroke recurrence, and survival in patients with first-ever ischemic stroke.

Renal cell carcinoma suspected at time of organ donation 2008-2016: A report of the OPTN ad hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee Registry.

All 179 reports to the OPTN of potential renal cell carcinoma (RCC) transmission from 1/1/2008 through 12/31/2016 were reviewed. Cases were divided into those with donor tumor known or suspected at time of transplant (N = 147 donors), and those in which tumor was initially found after transplant (N = 32). We sought to understand the risk of transplanting either the affected kidney, the contralateral kidney or non-renal organs from donors with a suspected/confirmed unilateral RCC.

Influence of physicochemical parameters on the spatial distribution of snail species that are intermediate hosts of human schistosomes in the Senegal River Delta.

The objective of this work was to identify possible correlations between physicochemical parameters (water temperature, water flow velocity, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, nitrates, and phosphates) and the spatial distribution in the Senegal River delta of snail species that are intermediate hosts of human schistosomes. Eight water points (ME1 to ME4, NE1 and NE2, TA1 and TA2) were selected in the villages of Menguègne Boye, Ndellé Boye, and Thilla for biweekly monitoring of these snails and the physicochemical parameters of the water. The results show that the spatial distribution of the snail populations is related to pH, dissolved oxygen (mg/l), conductivity, temperature (̊C), and water flow velocity (m/s).

Case Report: Triple Combination Therapy for Recalcitrant Perineal Pyoderma Gangrenosum.
