Increased accuracy of fetal weight estimation with a gender-specific weight formula.

Objective: To test whether Schild's sex-specific formula for estimating fetal weight is more accurate than commonly used regression formulae.

Methods: The gender-specific formula and 10 widely used equations were evaluated in a group of 989 pregnancies. Each fetus underwent ultrasound examination with complete biometric parameters within 7 days before delivery.

Gender-specific weight estimation of fetuses between 2,501 and 3,999 g--new regression formulae.

Objective: To develop new gender-specific regression formulae to estimate fetal weight focusing on a particular weight range from 2,501 to 3,999 g.

Methods: 3,254 singleton pregnancies were included to generate new regression formulae for female and male fetuses, and to evaluate their accuracy.

Results: In comparison with commonly used formulae, the new gender-specific and weight-range-specific method of fetal weight estimation provided greater accuracy.

Disseminated panniculitis in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) due to Mycobacterium chelonae infection.

A 14-year-old female bottlenose dolphin was diagnosed with mycobacterial panniculitis based on punch biopsy specimens. The necropsy revealed numerous pyogranulomas in the blubber, as well as marked acute multifocal necrosuppurative pneumonia and lymphadenitis. In addition, the animal had marked scoliosis, which had first been noted clinically in the dolphin at about 1 mo of age.

Transradial versus transfemoral approach for coronary angiography and intervention in patients above 75 years of age.

Aims: The transradial (TR) approach has potentially lower complication rates than transfemoral (TF) approach coronary angiography. However, it may be technically more challenging, especially in elderly patients with alterations in vascular anatomy. We thus determined success rates, procedural data, and complication rates of TR angiography in comparison to the TF approach in elderly patients in a randomized, prospective trial.

Elevated rates of substance use disorders in non-psychotic siblings of individuals with schizophrenia.

Background: Individuals with schizophrenia use psychoactive substances more frequently than the general population. The genetic vulnerability to develop schizophrenia may also increase risk for the development of substance use disorders. We examine this hypothesis by assessing the rates of substance use disorders and nicotine use in non-psychotic siblings of individuals with schizophrenia.

Tailored navigation in colorectal cancer screening.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is underutilized. Effective methods to increase screening use are needed. This study sought to determine the impact of tailored navigation on CRC screening in primary care.

Results of the performance verification of the CoaguChek XS system.

Background: This is the first paper reporting a performance verification study of a point-of-care (POC) monitor for prothrombin time (PT) testing according to the requirements given in chapter 8 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17593:2007 standard "Clinical laboratory testing and in vitro medical devices - Requirements for in vitro monitoring systems for self-testing of oral anticoagulant therapy". The monitor under investigation was the new CoaguChek XS system which is designed for use in patient self testing. Its detection principle is based on the amperometric measurement of the thrombin activity generated by starting the coagulation cascade using a recombinant human thromboplastin.

We report the magnetic structure of (Co(0.5)Ni(0.5))(3)V(2)O(8) (CNVO) deduced by single crystal neutron diffraction.

Evidence for two separate energy gaps in underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors from broadband infrared ellipsometry.

We present broadband infrared ellipsometry measurements of the c-axis conductivity of underdoped RBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-delta} (R=Y, Nd, and La) single crystals. Our data show that separate energy scales are underlying the redistributions of spectral weight due to the normal state pseudogap and the superconducting gap. Furthermore, they provide evidence that these gaps do not share the same electronic states and do not merge on the overdoped side.

Preventive antibacterial therapy in acute ischemic stroke: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Pneumonia is a major risk factor of death after acute stroke. In a mouse model, preventive antibacterial therapy with moxifloxacin not only prevents the development of post-stroke infections, it also reduces mortality, and improves neurological outcome significantly. In this study we investigate whether this approach is effective in stroke patients.

[Regulations for the protection of workers against the effects of hazardous substances at the workplace].

This article describes the central legal rules regarding the protection of the health and safety of workers against hazardous substances. As placing of chemicals on the market is covered by the European Regulation REACH and the upcoming GHS which are directly effective in Germany, the European directives according to occupational safety and health, chemical agents as well as carcinogens and mutagens at the workplace have to be implemented into national laws. In Germany these are the Labour Protection Law and the Hazardous Substances Ordinance.

Thermochemistry of Gd2BaCuO5 and LuBa2Cu3Ox.

Solution calorimetry, using 6.0 M HCl as a solvent, is used to study the thermochemistry of Gd2BaCuO5 and the high-temperature superconductor LuBa2Cu3O6.92.

The hen's egg test for micronucleus induction (HET-MN): novel analyses with a series of well-characterized substances support the further evaluation of the test system.

The hen's egg test for micronucleus induction (HET-MN) combines the use of the commonly accepted genetic endpoint "formation of micronuclei" with the well-characterized and complex model of the incubated hen's egg, which enables metabolic activation, elimination and excretion of xenobiotics -- including those that are mutagens or promutagens. This assay procedure is in line with demands for animal protection. In three previous publications we presented the scientific rationale and methodological aspects for this assay as well as results for some well-characterized mutagens and promutagens.

Cost-effectiveness of targeted and tailored interventions on colorectal cancer screening use.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is cost-effective but underused. The objective of this study was to determine the cost-effectiveness of targeted and tailored behavioral interventions to increase CRC screening use by conducting an economic analysis associated with a randomized trial among patients in a large, racially and ethnically diverse, urban family practice in Philadelphia.

Methods: The incremental costs per unit increase were measured in individuals who were screened during the 24 months after intervention.

Characterization of a chemokine receptor CCR5-negative T cell line and its use in determining human immunodeficiency virus type 1 phenotype.

A human CD4-positive T cell line from a donor homozygous negative for the chemokine receptor CCR5 was established, characterized, and used for determining the coreceptor usage of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) isolates. Clones of this IL-2 dependent human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-I) immortalized cell line, named IsnoR5 clones 1 and 2, are susceptible to infection by HIV-1 isolates that use CXCR4 as a coreceptor but resistant to infection by CCR5 tropic HIV-1 viruses. HIV-1 isolates whose replication is inhibited in IsnoR5 cells in the presence of the bicyclam AMD 3100, a CXCR4 specific inhibitor, utilize a coreceptor distinct from CCR5 and CXCR4.

Importance of in-plane anisotropy in the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8.

The phase diagram of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet BaNi(2)V(2)O(8) is studied by specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and magnetization for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to c. At micro(o)H* approximately 1.5 T, a crossover to a high-field state, where T(N)(H) increases linearly, arises from a competition of intrinsic and field-induced in-plane anisotropies.

A randomized controlled trial of the impact of targeted and tailored interventions on colorectal cancer screening.

Methods: A total of 1546 primary care practice patients completed a baseline telephone survey and were randomized to 4 study groups: control (387 patients), Standard Intervention (SI) (387 patients), Tailored Intervention (TI) (386 patients), or Tailored Intervention plus Phone (TIP) (386 patients).

First case of successful allogeneic stem cell transplantation in an HIV-patient who acquired severe aplastic anemia.

We report on the first successful allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) in an HIV-infected patient with severe aplastic anemia (SAA) per- formed at a tertiary care institution. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was administered until transplantation and restarted 34 days later with sustained virological response. The patient did however develop a rapid rise in HIV load during the interruption of HAART associated with an acute febrile illness.

Cannabis induces different cognitive changes in schizophrenic patients and in healthy controls.

It is known that 60 to 80% of schizophrenic patients show deficits in cognition. There may be an increase in these deficits as a result of additional regular use of cannabis. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of chronic cannabis consumption on the cognitive functions of schizophrenic patients and healthy control subjects after a minimum abstinence time of 28 days.

Magnetic resonance imaging showed no signs of overuse or permanent injury to the lumbar sacral spine during a Special Forces training course.

Background Context: Special Forces training is even more demanding than that of elite athletes. The training includes grueling physical activity and periods of sleep deprivation. The soldiers routinely carry heavy loads up to 40% of their body weight on their backs while running and marching for distances up to 90 km.

Serial chemical restraint for treatment of decubitus ulcers in two neonatal white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum).

Two neonatal white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum) at two zoological institutions were medically managed for wounds characterized by extensive multifocal necrosis of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, associated with decubitus ulcers throughout the body. Wounds resulted from prolonged recumbency due to inability to stand in one case and causes unconfirmed in the other. Both calves were born in cement stalls during winter.

Clinical and cardiorespiratory effects of propofol in the spotted bamboo shark (Chylloscyllium plagiosum).

Sharks are important exhibit animals in aquariums and zoologic institutions worldwide. Although veterinarians are encountering these species more frequently in these institutions, our knowledge regarding safe restraint and anesthesia is limited. To date there have been only a few anecdotal reports or studies evaluating the effects of tricaine methane sulfonate (MS-222), ketamine hydrochloride, and tiletamine and zolazepam (Telazol) in sharks.

Pharmacokinetics of saquinavir, atazanavir, and ritonavir in a twice-daily boosted double-protease inhibitor regimen.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of atazanavir (ATV), saquinavir (SQV), and ritonavir (RTV) in a boosted double-protease inhibitor (PI) therapy regimen without reverse transcriptase inhibitors (RTIs). The study design was as follows. Patients with limited RTI options received a PI combination of 300/100 mg ATV/RTV once daily and 1,000 mg SQV twice daily (group 1; n=49) without RTI comedication.

Performance evaluation of the new CoaguChek XS system compared with the established CoaguChek system by patients experienced in INR-self management.

The aim of the study was to analyze the concordance of INR values obtained by educated lay users with those obtained by professionals and to determine the imprecision of the new system. The new CoaguChek XS system was tested in a user study over six weeks at four study centres in Austria, Denmark and Germany. Seventy-five patients receiving oral anticoagulant therapy were enrolled in the study.
