Dysfunction within various IEC fractions can alter intestinal permeability in a genetically susceptible host, resulting in a chronic and debilitating condition known as Crohn's disease (CD). Methods: We performed small RNA sequencing of adult colon tissue from CD and NIBD controls.
Background: The intestinal microbiota is associated with human health and diseases. The luminal microbiota (LM) and the mucosal-associated microbiota (MAM) are 2 distinct ecosystems with different metabolic and immunological functions.
Aim: To characterize the intestinal LM and MAM in humans using high throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene.
Clinical and laboratory studies indicate that thrombopoietin (TPO) gene expression increases during inflammation. To clarify the role of interleukin 6 (IL-6) in this process, blood cell counts, plasma TPO concentrations, and hepatic and renal TPO mRNA levels were investigated in wild-type and IL-6 knockout mice, with sterile abscesses produced by subcutaneous injection of turpentine oil. Treatment did not cause a change in blood cell counts during the 72 h period of observation.

It depends much more on a second step, of returning to oneself-- having returned from foreign parts, to re-integrate oneself into one's own culture. This means that the journey itself into foreign areas, the encounter with medical and nursing systems of other cultures, is in fact only half the journey; the complete journey is one which returns back into one's own (nursing) culture.

Thrombopoietin gene expression in the human adult central nervous system (CNS) appears to be locally restricted. Its production is presumably restricted to the liver but extrahepatic expression by inflamed tissue has not been studied in detail. By real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry we here show that renal cortical tubular epithelial cells (TEC) express CRP mRNA and protein within 6 h after stimulation with conditioned medium (CM) or IL-6, but not IL-1alpha or TNF-alpha.

To study whether IFN interferes with hepatic thrombopoietin (TPO) synthesis, we used the human hepatoma cell line HepG2. Our results show that IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, or IFN-gamma did not impair TPO mRNA expression, as determined by quantitative RT-PCR, even when high IFN doses (up to 5000 U/ml) or long-term incubations (up to 14 days) were applied.

Unlabelled: Evidence from cell culture and animal experiments suggests a neuroprotective and neurotrophic function of erythropoietin (EPO). We have quantitated the distribution of EPO mRNA expression in the developing human central nervous system (CNS).
Patients And Methods: Up to seven biopsies from different areas of the CNS of four preterm fetuses (gestational age 23-37 weeks) were obtained at routine postmortem examinations.
Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) promotes angiogenesis and inflammatory reactions. VEGF mRNA is detectable in the proximal tubules of inflamed kidneys but not in normals. In other organs VEGF gene expression is induced by hypoxia and cytokines such as interleukin 1 (IL-1).
