The care of the pediatric athlete should not be viewed as caring for small adults. Growing bones, tendons, ligaments, and muscles respond differently to stress. Proper training and conditioning can remedy most problems in the immature athlete.

Injuries to the hyaline cartilage of the knee joint are difficult to diagnose without invasive techniques. Even though these defects may be the most important prognostic factors in assessing knee joint injury, they are usually not diagnosed until arthrotomy or arthroscopy. Once injuries to hyaline cartilage are found and/or treated, no technique exists to follow these over time.

Four fresh cadaver knees were fitted with Lenox Hill knee braces according to the manufacturer's guidelines. A computer-assisted testing apparatus was constructed that allowed each knee to be tested as a function of knee flexion angle, joint load, and soft tissue integrity.

Rupture of the distal insertion of the biceps brachii may lead to severe functional impairment of the upper extremity on the basis of resultant weakness of elbow flexion and supination. When the diagnosis of a posttraumatic distal biceps tendon avulsion is made, a simple method of reattachment is possible and functionally warranted.

A case in which only one sibling of an identical, HLA-B27 negative, twin pairing is affected by ankylosing spondylitis is reported. While endogenous variables may predispose certain populations to ankylosing spondylitis, the discordance illustrated in these seronegative monozygotic twins indicates that exogenous factors may certainly influence the development and course of this disease.
