The relationship between collegiate adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) and adult children from dysfunctional families (ACDFs) was examined to determine whether ACOAs and ACDFs were at greater risk of stress than non-ACOAs and non-ACDFs. The participants were 549 students from a midwestern university. The data collection instruments were the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test, 6-Item Version (CAST-6); the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales, Version II (FACES-II); and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS).

Grammatical errors were moderately correlated with performance on the reading and spelling subtests of the Wide Range Achievement Test and the Peabody Individual Achievement Test. Factor analyses suggested the existence of an independent factor for grammatical errors.

The relationship between these factors and patient compliance with the therapeutic regimen was then determined. Results showed a statistically significant relationship between these two aspects of physician behavior and patient compliance: the more patients perceived the physician as giving explanations and showing concern, the better was patient compliance.
