Shiga toxin 1 (Stx1) represents an AB5 toxin produced by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, which cause gastrointestinal diseases in humans that are often followed by potentially fatal systemic complications, such as acute encephalopathy and hemolytic uremic syndrome. The expression of the preferential Stx1 receptor, Gb3Cer/CD77 (Gal alpha1-4Gal beta1-4Glc beta1-1Cer), is one of the primary determinants of susceptibility to tissue injury. The receptors were expressed in Xenopus oocytes by injection of rat brain mRNA. The reduction of formaldehyde exposure by stepwise improvement of the ventilation system at a pathologist's workplace is presented as an example in this paper. Assessment of formaldehyde concentration by personal air sampling at a workplace originally equipped with a hood ventilation system resulted in values of up to 4 ml/m3 in the pathologist's breathing zone.

A new specific method for urinary delta-aminolevulinic acid (ALA-U) measurement in man as a serial screening method for health control in occupational lead exposure was compared with a recommended, selective test (DAVIS method). The new test can be run fully automated, and the cost of material per sample is much lower than in the DAVIS method. ALA values obtained with this specific method were lower than those measured with the DAVIS method (= DAVIS values) in each case due to the elimination of interfering urinary compounds.

The possibility of a tumor-protective effect of selenium on the growth of benzpyrene-induced sarcoma was studied in an assay with Balb/c mice. The animals received 4 parts/10(6) selenium in their drinking water for 12 months prior to subcutaneous injection of benzpyrene to induce sarcomas. Lead elimination by ICRF 158, a lipophilic derivative of ethylene-diaminetetra-acetate (EDTA), was investigated in rats after chronic lead exposure. The animals had received a lead concentration of 550 ppm in their drinking water for 140 days. Subsequent treatment with ICRF 158 for 30 days led to increased mobilization and elimination of incorporated lead, and the lead-induced inhibition of hemosynthesis was removed.

Levels of cytochrome P-450 and the activities of amino-pyrinedemethylase and p-nitrophenol-UDP-glucuronyltransferase were measured in homogenates and microsomes of 16 to 19 day old chicken embryos exposed in ovo to phenobarbital. The activities of glucose-6-phosphatase were measured on the 19th day of incubation.
