Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is the most common surgical treatment for morbid obesity. While certain specialized ambulatory surgery centers offer LSG on an outpatient basis, patients undergoing LSG at most academic centers are admitted to hospital for initial postoperative convalescence and monitoring. Our institution has begun to offer LSG with same-day discharge (SDD) in select patients.

Woody plants offer a wide range of valuable ecosystem services, but their distribution across socioeconomic gradients in urban landscapes remains poorly understood. Thus, we explored the effect of socioeconomic and legacy factors on plant species richness and phylogenetic diversity, and the motivations for growing and keeping certain species. We sampled a total of 300 households across a socioeconomic gradient in the city of Harare, Zimbabwe, in high-, medium- and low-density areas, representing low to high wealth strata.

During pediatric liver transplant, biliary reconstruction is often performed using Roux-en-Y choledoc-hojejunostomy or hepaticojejunostomy due to size mismatch, excessive tension caused by distance between donor and recipient ducts, or for transplant to treat primary biliary pathology. This method can be associated with additional small bowel-related complications compared with end-to-end ductal anastomosis. We report a case of late small bowel obstruction secondary to an impacted bezoar that formed at a patulous jejunojejunostomy portion of the biliary-enteric anastomosis.

Objective: The GH and IGF-1 axis is a candidate disease-modifying target in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) given its lipolytic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and GH receptor (GHR) expression in adult, human hepatic tissue is not well understood across the spectrum of NAFLD severity. Therefore, we sought to investigate hepatic IGF-1R and GHR expression in subjects with NAFLD utilizing gene expression analysis (GEA) and immunohistochemistry (IHC).

Approaches to manage nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are limited by an incomplete understanding of disease pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to identify hepatic gene-expression patterns associated with different patterns of liver injury in a high-risk cohort of adults with obesity. Using the NanoString Technologies (Seattle, WA) nCounter assay, we quantified expression of 795 genes, hypothesized to be involved in hepatic fibrosis, inflammation, and steatosis, in liver tissue from 318 adults with obesity.

The annual herb Parthenium hysterophorus L. (Asteraceae), remains one of Southern Africa's most significant invasive weeds, commonly invading savannas, and their rangelands, causing severe losses to agriculture, livestock production and native biodiversity. Previous studies have suggested that perennial grasses may act as useful competitive species, capable of suppressing the growth and invasion of P.

Background And Aims: Fine-scale spatial patterns of the seedlings of co-occurring species reveal the relative success of reproduction and dispersal and may help interpret coexistence patterns of adult plants. To understand whether postfire community dynamics are controlled by mathematical, biological or environmental factors, we documented seedling-adult (putative parent) distances for a range of co-occurring species. We hypothesized that nearest-seedling-to-adult distances should be a function of the distance between the closest conspecific seedlings, closest inter-adult distances and seedling-to-parent ratios, and also that these should scale up in a consistent way from all individuals, to within and between species and finally between functional types (FTs).
