Professional advisory groups, with patient and public involvement (PPI) representatives, can be used for co-production within research projects. This paper aims to document the benefits and challenges of undertaking stakeholder and participant engagement for an implementation research project within NHS (National Health Service) Wales. A patient focused research project, initiated by clinicians, on the use of patient empowerment tools within standard patient care, used a professional advisory group to identify appropriate tools to use within the research proposal.

Self-management of long-term conditions requires health professionals to understand and develop capabilities that empower the population they serve. A rapid evidence review was undertaken to assess the current evidence based on the psychometric properties of patient empowerment tools. MEDLINE was searched, and data were extracted for each publication and scored using a modified Psychometric and Pragmatic Evidence Rating Scale (PAPERS) evidence rating scale.

Growth and development of the Ceratopteris hermaphroditic gametophytes are dependent on cell proliferation in the marginal meristem, which when destroyed will regenerate at a new location on the body margin. We established a laser ablation method to destroy a single initial cell in the meristem. Ablation caused the cessation of cell proliferation accompanied by the disappearance of the expression of an auxin synthesis gene () and a cell proliferation marker gene ().

A Ceratopteris EXCESS MICROSPOROCYTES1 suppresses reproductive transition in the fern vegetative leaves.

Land plant sexual reproduction involves the transition of cells from somatic to reproductive identity during post-embryonic development. In Arabidopsis, the leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase EXCESS MICROSPOROCYTES1 (EXS/EMS1) restricts the number of sporogenous cells during the transition from diploid tissue to haploid spore production by promoting the formation of the tapetum cell layer within the anther. Although all land plants studied contain EMS1 genes, its function is unknown beyond a few angiosperms.

Purpose: Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) act to identify the patient's objective experience while receiving care. PREM data can provide feedback to professionals on patients' personal experience of care processes, quality of care and insight into patient expectations. This can support service improvements and person-centeredness of care.

Advances in mRNA synthesis and lipid nanoparticles technologies have helped make mRNA therapeutics and vaccines a reality. The 5' cap structure is a crucial modification required to functionalize synthetic mRNA for efficient protein translation in vivo and evasion of cellular innate immune responses. The extent of 5' cap incorporation is one of the critical quality attributes in mRNA manufacturing.

Background: Plants have the lifelong ability to generate new organs due to the persistent functioning of stem cells. In seed plants, groups of stem cells are housed in the shoot apical meristem (SAM), root apical meristem (RAM), and vascular cambium (VC). In ferns, a single shoot stem cell, the apical cell, is located in the SAM, whereas each root initiates from a single shoot-derived root initial.

Aim: Delayed closure of ileostomy following an anterior resection for rectal cancer in the UK is common. The aims of this study were (i) to investigate the variation in patient pathways between hospitals, (ii) to identify the key learning points from units with the shortest time to closure and (iii) to develop guidance for a pathway to minimize delay in ileostomy closure.

Method: This was a mixed methods study.

Background: Retinitis pigmentosa is an incurable, degenerative retinal condition causing progressive sight loss, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. The Argus II Retinal Prosthesis is a surgically implanted medical device that delivers electrical stimulation to the retina. It is intended to produce a form of artificial vision for blind people with severe-to-profound retinitis pigmentosa by stimulating the remaining viable retinal cells to induce visual perception.

First steps in PROMs and PREMs collection in Wales as part of the prudent and value-based healthcare agenda.

Purpose: Patients are experts in their own health and should be treated as equal partners in their care. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are an effective way of gathering patient feedback and can facilitate effectiveness and cost-effectiveness analysis to improve decision making and service improvement. The PROMs, PREMs & Effectiveness Programme was initiated in 2016 and aimed to develop an electronic platform to facilitate collection of PROMs and Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) from secondary care patients across Wales.

High PD-1/PD-L1 Checkpoint Interaction Infers Tumor Selection and Therapeutic Sensitivity to Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 Treatment.

Many cancers are termed immunoevasive due to expression of immunomodulatory ligands. Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) and cluster of differentiation 80/86 (CD80/86) interact with their receptors, programmed death receptor-1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4), respectively, on tumor-infiltrating leukocytes eliciting immunosuppression. Immunotherapies aimed at blocking these interactions are revolutionizing cancer treatments, albeit in an inadequately described patient subset.

Three Genes Define a Bacterial-Like Arsenic Tolerance Mechanism in the Arsenic Hyperaccumulating Fern Pteris vittata.

Arsenic is a carcinogenic contaminant of water and food and a growing threat to human health in many regions of the world. This study focuses on the fern Pteris vittata (Pteridaceae), which is extraordinary in its ability to tolerate and hyperaccumulate very high levels of arsenic that would kill any other plant or animal outside the Pteridaceae. Here, we use RNA-seq to identify three genes (GLYCERALDEHYDE 3-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE (PvGAPC1), ORGANIC CATION TRANSPORTER 4 (PvOCT4), and GLUTATHIONE S-TRANSFERASE (PvGSTF1) that are highly upregulated by arsenic and are necessary for arsenic tolerance, as demonstrated by RNAi.

Quality of life benefits from arrhythmia ablation: A longitudinal study using the C-CAP questionnaire and EQ5D.

Aims: To investigate long-term efficacy of cardiac ablation for symptomatic arrhythmia by gathering generic and arrhythmia-related quality of life data using patient-reported outcome measures before and after ablation.

Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing cardiac ablation procedures at three sites in the United Kingdom were enrolled (n = 561). Data were collected at baseline, at 8-16 weeks, and 12 months after the ablation with responses from 390 patients received at all three time points.

Conceptual Framework for Assessing Ecosystem Health.

Over the past century, the environment of the Gulf of Mexico has been significantly altered and impaired by extensive human activities. A national commitment to restore the Gulf was finally initiated in response to the unprecedented Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Consequently, there is a critical need for an assessment framework and associated set of indicators that can characterize the health and sustainability of an ecosystem having the scale and complexity of the Gulf.

A field evaluation of a rapid dual immunoassay for human immunodeficiency virus and syphilis antibodies, Hanoi, Vietnam.

The SD BIOLINE HIV/Syphilis Duo (SD BIOLINE DUO) rapid test is a dual rapid lateral flow immunoassay that detects antibodies to both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and Treponema pallidum (TP) 'syphilis' via fingerprick whole blood. We evaluated the field performance of the SD BIOLINE HIV/Syphilis Duo test among two populations in Hanoi, Vietnam - men who have sex with men (MSM) and pregnant women. We also surveyed factors that influence participants' willingness to test for HIV and syphilis.

Requirements for the collection of electronic PROMS either "in clinic" or "at home" as part of the PROMs, PREMs and Effectiveness Programme (PPEP) in Wales: a feasibility study using a generic PROM tool.

Background: The patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), patient-reported experience measure (PREMs) and Effectiveness Programme (PPEP) launched with the aim of supporting all National Health Service Wales (NHS Wales) organisations to collect PROMs and PREMs across a range of conditions. The aim is to collect generic and condition-specific PROMs and PREMs electronically from every secondary care patient in Wales to provide a measure that can be used to determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of treatments and services. This study reports on the experience of the PPEP in developing an electronic platform suitable for large-scale data collection, storage, analysis and reporting and identifies the problems encountered and solutions implemented using a generic PROM survey as an example.

Eight-Week Return to Play Following Latarjet Shoulder Reconstruction in an Australian Football Player: A Case Report.

Introduction: Anterior shoulder dislocation is a common injury in many sports, resulting in extended time lost from play with an extremely high recurrence rate in young athletes playing a high-risk sport. Latarjet shoulder reconstruction is a common surgical procedure used to prevent subsequent dislocation with an expected rehabilitation time frame of between 4 and 6 months before return to play.

Case Description: A 21-year-old male Australian football player experienced 2 left-sided shoulder dislocations before undergoing a left Latarjet shoulder reconstruction.

Pediatric Lateral Patellar Retinacular Sleeve Avulsion.

A 10-year-old girl presented to the physical therapist with acute left knee pain, after sprinting that morning. She reported a pop and lateral knee pain, which caused her to stop her run. The physical therapist referred the patient for radiographs that day, which showed a possible lateral patellar avulsion.

Benthic microalgae serve as the major food resource for porcelain crabs ( spp.) in oyster reefs: gut content and pigment evidence.

Suspension-feeding porcelain crabs ( spp.) are often the most abundant decapod crustaceans in oyster reef habitat. Analysis of water column and subtidal algal biomass from three Texas estuaries suggests that planktonic food resources are insufficient for porcelain crab growth.

The Association Between Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Markers of Inflammation and Immune Activation in HIV-Infected Individuals With Controlled Viremia.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be associated with chronic immune dysregulation and a proinflammatory state. Among HIV-infected individuals, PTSD is associated with greater morbidity and mortality, but the association with immune dysfunction has not been evaluated. This study explores the association between PTSD and selected markers of inflammation and immune activation in a cohort of HIV-infected, virally-suppressed individuals.

Factors Influencing the Delivery of HIV-Related Services to Severely Mentally Ill Individuals: The Provider's Perspective.

Background: Individuals with severe mental illnesses (SMI) are disproportionately vulnerable to HIV infection but are not consistently engaged in HIV-related services.

Objective: To understand factors influencing implementation of HIV-related services to individuals with SMI, we conducted a series of focus groups with multidisciplinary clinicians and staff serving individuals with SMI in outpatient, emergency, acute inpatient, and chronic inpatient levels of care.

Method: Six focus groups with 30 participants were conducted, audiotaped, and transcribed.
