Background: Many critical care nurses experience burnout; however, resilience shows promise as a potential solution to burnout. This study was conducted to better understand nurse burnout and resilience in response to workplace adversity in critical care.

Design: A grounded theory investigation, using the Corbin and Strauss methodology.

Little is known about the process of how nurses transition between vocational training and institutions of higher education. Understanding this process provides educators with the knowledge to support new groups of university students making this transition. Grounded theory (GT) was used to explore and understand this process.

Purpose: To present the long-term results of Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation.

Methods: Consecutive case series of 94 eyes with AGV implantation over 7 years. Temporary tube ligation with C3F8 gas fill was used in high-risk eyes (group G&L) and compared with standard implantation in both phakic (group A) and pseudophakic/aphakic eyes (group B).

Purpose: To document the outcome of viscocanalostomy (VC) alone or combined with phacoemulsification (phaco-VC) in eyes with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG) and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG).

Methods: A prospective, comparative study of 314 eyes undergoing VC in two centres over 6 years was conducted. Main outcome measures were: (i) intraocular pressure (IOP) control (complete success was IOP < or = 18 mmHg without medication and failure IOP > 18 mmHg); and (ii) requirement for Nd:YAG laser goniopuncture (YAG-GP) if IOP > 21 mmHg.

Purpose: To investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of non-penetrating glaucoma surgery (NPGS) augmented with mitomycin C (MMC) or 5-fluorouracil (5FU) in eyes at high risk of failure of glaucoma filtration surgery.

Methods: Prospective study of all eyes, undergoing NPGS with 0.04% MMC (1 to 2 min topical or 0.

This article presents a novel application of grounded theory (GT) to the creation of memorial services. Several relevant aspects of GT methodology are presented that have made a positive and significant contribution to the creation of relevant, meaningful, and hopeful memorial services. The relevance of the GT (the story) that emerges as the memorial service lies in the very manner in which the story is created.

Ovulation rates were measured in 547 progeny of 24 rams in a Romney flock with a long history of high prolificacy. These sheep were from the same family line and the distribution of ovulation rates suggests the presence of a segregating major gene (FecW) that increases prolificacy. The phenotype differs from those previously described for major genes affecting prolificacy in sheep.

Purpose: To compare the postoperative results of phacotrabeculectomy with implantation of PMMA, foldable silicone or foldable hydrofobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting: Glaucoma unit, The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool, United Kingdom.

Methods: We studied a total of 124 eyes of three consecutive groups of patients with glaucoma and cataract that underwent phacotrabeculectomy with implantation of a PMMA (30 eyes), a foldable silicone (57 eyes) or a foldable acrylic (37 eyes) IOL.

Background: The Self-Perception and Relationships Tool (S-PRT) is intended to be a clinically responsive and holistic assessment of patients' experience of illness and subjective Health Related Quality of Life (HRQL).

Methods: A diversity of patients were involved in two phases of this study. Patient samples included individuals involved with renal, cardiology, psychiatric, cancer, chronic pelvic pain, and sleep services.

Purpose: To study the outcome of viscocanalostomy (VC) and deep sclerectomy (DS) for the surgical management of medically uncontrolled glaucoma.

Patients And Methods: A non-randomized, prospective study of all consecutive non-penetrating glaucoma filtering procedures was carried out in two centres. In the first centre, one surgeon (MSW) performed VC in 105 eyes (27 VC and 78 phaco VC).

A 42-year-old woman presented with uncontrolled glaucoma despite patent peripheral iridotomies after a previous episode of acute angle-closure glaucoma. Spherophakia was diagnosed by anterior segment findings, refraction, A-scan biometry, and ultrasound biomicroscopy. Continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis, phacoemulsification, and infusion/aspiration were performed in the right eye.

Background: Delphi perimetry is a method of visual field examination which produces a statistical estimation of the visual field by testing only four critical points of the central visual field. This study was performed to evaluate this technique for the detection of glaucomatous field loss.

Method: Patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension underwent Delphi perimetry and Humphrey visual field analysis (HVFA) program 24-2.

Purpose: To compare long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) control after extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation combined with trabeculectomy (ECCE + TRAB) with that after phacotrabeculectomy and IOL implantation.

Setting: Glaucoma Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Liverpool, England.

Method: This retrospective study comprised 32 eyes having ECCE + TRAB and 31 eyes having phacotrabeculectomy with a mean follow-up of 37.

Background And Objectives: Late bleb leak may follow months to years after filtration surgery. This article describes the surgical repair of eight leaking blebs using a full-thickness scleral graft and analyzes the efficacy of the procedure and its effect on intraocular pressure (IOP) control.

Patients And Methods: The indications for surgical bleb revision were hypotony maculopathy (2 eyes), endophthalmitis (2 eyes), bleb infection (2 eyes), and chronic epiphora and blurring of vision (2 eyes).

We have studied the effects of dermatochalasis on Humphrey automated perimetry of the central 24 degrees visual field. Fifteen visual fields of 9 ocular hypertensive patients (18 eyes) were found to be incongruous with their apparently healthy optic discs. Examination revealed dermatochalasis, which was felt to be responsible for the field defects.
