Emergence of OXA-48 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacter cloacae ST89 infection in Poland.

Background: The utility of carbapenems, which are considered 'last-line' agents, is being diminished by the growing incidence of various resistance mechanisms in bacteria. We aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacter cloacae recovered from a 76-year-old patient who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting and repair of the mitral and tricuspid valves. Interestingly, the patient had no prior history of hospital admission abroad.

Candidaemia in polish hospitals - a multicentre survey.

Significant changes in the frequency of candidaemia and the distribution of causative species have been noted worldwide in the last two decades. In this study, we present the results of the first multicentre survey of fungaemia in Polish hospitals. A total of 302 candidaemia episodes in 294 patients were identified in 20 hospitals during a 2-year period.

Susceptibility, phenotypes of resistance, and extended-spectrum β-lactamases in Acinetobacter baumannii strains.

Acinetobacter baumannii plays an increasing role in the pathogenesis of infections in humans. The bacilli are frequently isolated from patients treated in intensive care units. A growing resistance to antibiotics is leading to the emergence of strains that are multidrug-resistant and resistant to all available agents.

The aac(6')Ib gene in Proteus mirabilis strains resistant to aminoglycosides.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of aac(6')-Ib gene conferring resistance to aminoglycosides in Proteus mirabilis strains. Five isolates had aac(6')-Ib gene. In one case the gene was no-expressed.

[Role of mycoplasmas in urogenital tract infections and their complications].

In the literature from recent years it is stressed the significant epidemiological and clinical role of the sexually transmitted infections caused by so called "new generation" pathogens including mycoplasmas. The paper gives a review of the current literature concerning the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapy of the infections of urogenital tract caused by mycoplasmas.
