Gradient adaptive step size adaptive filters have been widely used to adapt different biomedical application environments and obtain useful life signals from serious ambient noise and interferences. In order to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the life signals, this paper presents a class of signed-gradient adaptive step size least mean square (LMS) adaptive filters. The proposed algorithms introduce a sign function to replace the gradient of squared error in the step size updating process of the gradient adaptive step size LMS adaptive filters.

Least mean square (LMS) adaptive filter has been used to extract life signals from serious ambient noises and interferences in biomedical applications. However, a LMS adaptive filter with a fixed step size always suffers from slow convergence rate or large signal distortion due to the diversity of the application environments. An ideal adaptive filtering system should be able to adapt different environments and obtain the useful signals with low distortion.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWith the aim of extending the usefulness of an existing biomimetic catalytic system, cobalt porphyrin catalytic units with thiol linkers were heterogenized via chemical grafting to silicon wafers and utilized for the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone to p-benzoquinone. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the morphology and composition of the heterogeneous catalyst. The results of the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone obtained with porphyrins grafted on silicon were compared with those obtained earlier with the same catalyst in homogeneous phase and immobilized on gold.

This 2D SPR imaging technique may enable parallel label-free detection of multiple analytes and is compatible with the microarray chip platform. This system uses our previously reported differential phase measurement approach, in which 2D phase maps obtained from the signal (P) and reference (S) polarizations are compared pixel by pixel.
