Neonatal brain injury remains a significant issue with limited treatment options. This study investigates the potential of the endogenous neurosteroid dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester (DHEAS) as neuroprotective agents, building on evidence of their mechanisms in adult brain injury models. The primary objective was to evaluate their neuroprotective and anti-oxidative properties in a mouse model of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

The aim of the current study was to systematically evaluate the effect of postnatal CMV infection on growth and cognitive outcome in an unselected, contemporary cohort of very preterm infants.
Methods: Infants <32 gestational weeks (2011-2018) were screened for postnatal CMV infection.
Why severe injury to the central nervous system (CNS) triggers the development of large neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHOs) within periarticular muscles remains unknown. We report that spinal cord injury (SCI) triggers a rapid corticosterone spike in mice, which is causal for NHO development because treatments with corticosterone or the synthetic glucocorticoid (GC) receptor (GR) agonist dexamethasone are sufficient to trigger heterotopic ossification and upregulate the expression of osteoinductive and osteogenic differentiation genes in injured muscles even without SCI. The central role for GR signaling in causing NHO is further demonstrated in mice deleted for the GR gene (Nr3c1), which no longer develop NHO after SCI.

Neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS) is likely initiated by autoreactive T cells and perpetuated by infiltration of additional immune cells, but the precise role of MAIT cells in MS pathogenesis remains unknown. Here, we use experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mouse model of MS, and find an accumulation of MAIT cells in the inflamed central nervous system (CNS) enriched for MAIT17 (RORγt) and MAIT1/17 (T-betRORγt) subsets with inflammatory and protective features.

We aimed to investigate whether amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) signals and General Movement Assessment (GMA) scores differed in very preterm infants with postnatal CMV infections.
Methods: This was a retrospective single-centre study, conducted at Innsbruck Medical University Hospital, Austria, between February 2011 and November 2018.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the role of breastfeeding in providing passive immunity to infants via specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in breast milk. We aimed to quantify these antibodies across different lactation stages and identify influencing factors. This prospective study involved mother-child dyads from Innsbruck University Hospital, Austria, with a positive maternal SARS-CoV-2 test during pregnancy or peripartum between 2020 and 2023.

Word learning includes the establishment of longer-term representations for the phonological form and the meaning of the word in the brain, as well as the link between them. However, it is not known how the brain processes word forms immediately after they have been learned.

This effect can be greatly reduced by applying FC measures insensitive to instantaneous, zero-lag dependencies (corrected measures). However, numerous studies showed that FC measures sensitive to volume conduction (uncorrected measures) exhibit higher reliability and higher subject-level identifiability.

Constitutive marrow endothelial E-selectin expression also supports bone marrow hematopoiesis via NF-κB-mediated signaling. Correspondingly, E-selectin interaction with E-selectin ligand (sialyl Lewis) on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells leads to chemotherapy resistance in vivo.

This recurrent remodeling and how it shapes organ-specific aging remains poorly explored. Using single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, we systematically characterized morphological and gene expression changes occurring in ovary, oviduct, uterus, cervix, and vagina at each phase of the mouse estrous cycle, during decidualization, and into aging.

These changes are purported to represent the formation and accumulation of precision in internal models that anticipate future states based on probabilistic and/or statistical learning. This study features an unexpected finding; a strong order-dependence in the speed with which deviant responses are elicited that anchors to first learning.

In health, the government and especially society expect that investments in research will produce results that go beyond the production and publication of knowledge, provoking outcomes such as public policies, systems, products, and technologies to benefit the health of the population. However, closing the gaps between research and application requires overcoming a number of challenges.

Nonobese diabetic-severe combined immunodeficiency (NOD-SCID) IL2Rγ (NSG) mice expressing human stem cell factor, granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor, and interleukin-3 (NSG-SGM3) support robust development of human myeloid cells and T cells but have reduced longevity due to the development of fatal hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Here, we describe an optimized protocol for development of human immune chimerism in NSG-SGM3 mice.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, quantitatively reflecting microstructural brain development of white matter regions with parameters such as fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) assesses electrocortical activity and brain function.

However, these two types of regularities are often indistinguishable in isochronous sequences, as both statistical learning and beat perception can be elicited by the regular alternation of accented and unaccented sounds. Here, we manipulated the isochrony of sound sequences in order to disentangle statistical learning from beat perception in sleeping newborn infants in an EEG experiment, as previously done in adults and macaque monkeys.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important modulators of neuronal stress responses, but knowledge about their contribution to neuronal protection or damage during inflammation is limited. Here, we constructed a regulatory miRNA-mRNA network of inflamed motor neurons by leveraging cell type-specific miRNA and mRNA sequencing of mice undergoing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE).

The traditional definition of menopause based on the last menstrual bleed is limited and hinders cross-species comparison. Here, we redefine it as the permanent cessation of ovulation and show menopause to be widespread across mammalian orders.
