Recent genomic studies suggest that Asian breast cancer (BC) may have distinct somatic features; however, most comparisons of BC genomic features across populations did not account for differences in age, subtype, and sequencing methods. In this study, we analyzed whole-exome sequencing (WES) data to characterize omatic copy number alterations (SCNAs) and mutation profiles in 98 Hong Kong BC (HKBC) patients and compared with those from The Cancer Genome Atlas of European ancestry (TCGA-EA, N = 686), which had similar distributions of age at diagnosis and PAM50 subtypes as in HKBC. We developed a two-sample Poisson model to compare driver gene selection pressure, which reflects the effect sizes of cancer driver genes, while accounting for differences in sample size, sequencing platforms, depths, and mutation calling methods.

Age-related DNA methylation is a potential mechanism contributing to breast cancer development. Studies of primarily Caucasian women have identified many CpG sites of age-related methylation in non-diseased breast tissue possibly driving cancer development over time. There is a paucity of studies involving Asian women whose ages at breast cancer onset are usually younger than Caucasians.

Previous studies reported heterogeneous associations between obesity and reproductive-related breast cancer risk factors and breast cancer intrinsic subtypes; however, few studies have been conducted in Asian populations. Here, we aimed to examine whether risks associated with established breast cancer risk factors varied by breast cancer subtypes in Chinese women. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study in Hong Kong, including a total of 2169 Chinese women.

Background: Heterogeneity of immune gene expression patterns of luminal breast cancer (BC), which is clinically heterogeneous and overall considered as low immunogenic, has not been well studied especially in non-European populations. Here, we aimed at characterizing the immune gene expression profile of luminal BC in an Asian population and associating it with patient characteristics and tumor genomic features.

Methods: We performed immune gene expression profiling of tumor and adjacent normal tissue in 92 luminal BC patients from Hong Kong using RNA-sequencing data and used unsupervised consensus clustering to stratify tumors.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the link between coffee consumption and breast cancer risk among Hong Kong Chinese women, using data from 2,169 participants aged 24-84.
  • - Results indicated no overall association between coffee drinking and breast cancer risk; however, instant coffee drinkers had a higher risk (AOR = 1.50) while brewed coffee drinkers had a lower risk (AOR = 0.48).
  • - The findings suggest conflicting risks based on coffee type and highlight the need for larger studies to better understand the relationship between different coffee products and breast cancer.

Chemokine receptor CXCR4 was involved in the progression of breast cancer to a metastatic phenotype, leading to the major cause of death in patients. A more in-depth understanding of signaling mechanism underlying CXCR4 is critical to develop effective therapies toward metastasis. Recently, the role of antimicrobial peptide LL-37 in contributing to the metastasis of breast cancer cells was observed.

Aim: This 5-year prospective follow-up of women randomized to general anesthesia (GA) with or without a thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) examined the risk of local recurrence, metastasis and mortality after breast cancer surgery.

Patients And Methods: A total of 180 patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy were randomized to one of three study groups: standardized GA only; GA with a single-injection TPVB (s-TPVB) and placebo paravertebral infusion after surgery for 72-h; and GA plus with continuous TPVB (c-TPVB) for 72-h postoperatively. Cox proportional models were used to assess the effect of TPVB on long-term outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer is a significant health issue in Shanghai and Hong Kong, contributing to 20-25% of new female cancer cases, with a notable increasing trend in incidence rates from 1976 to 2009.
  • In Shanghai, the average annual percentage change (AAPC) in breast cancer incidence was 2.83, particularly high for women aged 50 and above, suggesting strong birth cohort effects, especially in post-menopausal women.
  • The study concludes that breast cancer incidence is rising faster in Shanghai than in Hong Kong, potentially linked to decreased birth rates and environmental factors, necessitating further research on these contributing elements.

Background: A novel line of research suggests that eating at nighttime may have several metabolic consequences that are highly relevant to breast cancer. We investigated the association between nighttime eating habits after 10 p.m.

No risk assessment tool is available for identifying high risk population of breast cancer (BCa) in Hong Kong. A case-control study including 918 BCa cases and 923 controls was used to develop the risk assessment model among Hong Kong Chinese women. Each participant received an in-depth interview to obtain their lifestyle and environmental risk factors.

Purpose: Experimental studies implicate tea and tea polyphenols may be preventive against breast cancer, but evidence from epidemiological studies has been inconsistent. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study to evaluate the role of tea especially green tea in breast cancer etiology.

Methods: We consecutively recruited 756 incident breast cancer cases and 789 hospital controls who had completed information on tea consumption.

Purpose: The role of family history to the risk of breast cancer was analyzed by incorporating menopausal status in Hong Kong Chinese women, with a particular respect to the estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) type.

Methods: Seven hundred and forty seven breast cancer incident cases and 781 hospital controls who had completed information on family cancer history in first-degree relatives (nature father, mother, and siblings) were recruited. Odds ratio for breast cancer were calculated by unconditional multiple logistic regression, stratified by menopausal status (a surrogate of endogenous female sex hormone level and age) and type of relative affected with the disease.

Background And Objectives: Patients undergoing breast cancer surgery frequently experience chronic postoperative pain. The primary objective of this randomized study was to determine if thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) reduced the incidence of chronic pain after a modified radical mastectomy (MRM) when compared with general anesthesia (GA).

Methods: One hundred eighty women undergoing MRM were randomized to 1 of 3 study groups: group 1: standardized GA, group 2: GA with a single-injection TPVB and placebo paravertebral infusion, and group 3: GA with a continuous TPVB.

We explored the detection of genome-wide hypomethylation in plasma using shotgun massively parallel bisulfite sequencing as a marker for cancer. Tumor-associated copy number aberrations (CNAs) could also be observed from the bisulfite DNA sequencing data. Hypomethylation and CNAs were detected in the plasma DNA of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, lung cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, smooth muscle sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumor.

Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a rare benign inflammatory disease of the breast that mimics carcinoma of the breast. Its etiology and treatment remain unclear. A retrospective review of nine women with histopathologic diagnosis of IGM was performed.

Mucinous carcinoma of the breast is a specific good prognostic type malignancy occurring in elderly patients. Neuroendocrine differentiation has long been described in mucinous carcinoma, but the significance of such finding is uncertain. We evaluated the neuroendocrine differentiation profiles of 38 cases of pure mucinous carcinoma and compared the clinicopathological differences between those with and those without neuroendocrine differentiation.
