Background: Natural variation and mutations in the envelope protein (S) of hepatitis B virus can translate into HBsAg variants no longer detectable by conventional HBsAg assays.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess the performance of 13 commercial assays currently used for screening and clinical analysis of HBsAg variants.

Study Design: The limit of detection (LOD) for each assay was established using two reference standards (WHO HBsAg 00/588 and the SFTS French reference).

Background: Chagas disease is endemic in Latin America (LA). Currently 10 million people are infected despite World Health Organization efforts aimed at preventing domestic transmission. However, with the migration of infected asymptomatic individuals to nonendemic countries, transmission of Chagas disease by transfusion may become a worldwide problem.

Gas-phase ionization/desolvation processes and their effect on protein charge state distribution under matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization conditions.

The charge state distribution of proteins was studied as a function of experimental conditions, to improve the understanding of the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mechanisms. The relative abundances of the multiply-charged ions appear to be a function of the matrix chosen, the laser fluence and the matrix-to-analyte molar ratio. A correlation is found between the matrix proton affinity and the yield of singly- versus multiply-charged ions.

Investigation into factors affecting precision in ion trap mass spectrometry using different scan directions and axial modulation potential amplitudes.

Electrospray ionization mass spectra obtained from different scan directions are observed to be dependent on the axial modulation potential amplitudes used for resonant ejection and on the positive deviation caused by higher even-multipole fields present in most commercial ion traps. The axial modulation voltage influences the dissociation of ions during resonant ejection and the observed mass shifts. The higher even-multipole fields in commercial ion traps are known to influence resonant ejection from the ion trap and can cause a loss in mass resolution for peaks in reverse scan mass spectra compared with that obtained by the forward scan.

Investigations into the use of a reverse scan in a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer.

The forward scan (i.e. an increasing RF voltage ramp for the mass-selective instability scan) is commonly used as an analytical scan for ion detection with quadrupole ion trap instruments.
