Under ischemic conditions, the absence of oxygen arrests oxidative phosphorylation, thereby eliminating the energy source by which hepatocellular mechanisms maintain homeostasis of calcium. This, in turn, leaves nonselective plasma membrane influx pores unopposed and results in a net increase in intracellular calcium concentrations.
