Background: Optimal titration of inspired oxygen is important to prevent hyperoxia in mechanically ventilated patients in ICUs. There is mounting evidence of the deleterious effects of hyperoxia; however, there is a paucity of data about F(IO(2)) practice and oxygen exposure among patients in ICUs. With this mapping pseudoreceptor methods attempt to create models of the target protein binding site around the ligand ensemble. The surface points of the pseudoreceptor model are typically independent descriptors and property mapping onto the surface points is prone to overfitting.

The spondyloarthropathies (SpA) are a group of inflammatory rheumatic diseases affecting the spine, peripheral joints and nonarticular structures. Often referred to as "seronegative" due to the absence of rheumatoid factor, SpA include ankylosing spondylitis (AS), reactive arthritis (ReA), enteropathic (IBD) associated arthritis, psoriatic arthritis (PsA), as well as undifferentiated, and juvenile SpA. A broad and overlapping spectrum of disease presentations creates difficulties in determining an initial diagnosis.

The Cretaceous-Paleogene mass extinction approximately 66 million years ago is conventionally thought to have been a turning point in mammalian evolution. Prior to that event and for the first two-thirds of their evolutionary history, mammals were mostly confined to roles as generalized, small-bodied, nocturnal insectivores, presumably under selection pressures from dinosaurs. Release from these pressures, by extinction of non-avian dinosaurs at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, triggered ecological diversification of mammals.

Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is the leading cause of transfusion-related mortality. To determine TRALI incidence by prospective, active surveillance and to identify risk factors by a case-control study, 2 academic medical centers enrolled 89 cases and 164 transfused controls. Recipient risk factors identified by multivariate analysis were higher IL-8 levels, liver surgery, chronic alcohol abuse, shock, higher peak airway pressure while being mechanically ventilated, current smoking, and positive fluid balance.

The bat fly (Trichobius major) is a blood-feeding ectoparasite of the cave myotis (Myotis velifer). A recent mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) study examining population structure of T. major in the South Central United States detected a single haplotype from all individuals examined (N = 48 from 12 different caves), representing one of only a few known examples of such widespread mtDNA uniformity.

Chronic wasting disease is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of cervids, similar to sheep scrapie that has only recently been detected in wild populations of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus hemionus) in western Canada. Relatively little is known about local transmission dynamics of the disease or the potential for long-distance spread. We analysed the population genetic structure of over 2000 white-tailed deer sampled from Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan using microsatellite profiles and mtDNA sequencing to assess the relative risk of disease spread.

Purpose: Panitumumab is a fully human anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) monoclonal antibody that improves progression-free survival (PFS) in chemotherapy-refractory metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). This trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of panitumumab plus fluorouracil, leucovorin, and irinotecan (FOLFIRI) compared with FOLFIRI alone after failure of initial treatment for mCRC by tumor KRAS status.

The miniaturization of mechanical assist devices and less invasive implantation techniques may lead to earlier intervention in patients with heart failure. Aims: We have previously shown that reduction of ischaemic cell swelling via enhanced cell volume regulation is a key mechanism of ischaemic preconditioning (IPC) in cardiomyocytes. We have also shown that pharmacological blockade of Cl(-) channels abolishes cardioprotection achieved by IPC in Langendorff-perfused hearts and freshly isolated cardiomyocytes, thus suggesting that Cl(-) plays a key role in IPC cardioprotection. A total of 929 polymorphic SNPs in EB (out of 54, 000 SNPs screened using a BovineSNP50 Illumina Genotyping BeadChip), and 1, 524 and 1, 403 polymorphic SNPs in WB and PB, respectively, were analysed. EB, WB and PB have all undergone recent drastic reductions in population size. Accordingly, they exhibited extremely depauperate genomes, deviations from genetic equilibrium and a genome organization consisting of a mosaic of haplotype blocks: regions with low haplotype diversity and high levels of linkage disequilibrium.
