Commercial overexploitation and climate change can alter the physiology and behavior of marine organisms, although intraspecific phenotypic responses to such changes can vary greatly depending on the environment, species, and severity of the stressor. Under the pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) hypothesis, behavior, physiology, and life-history traits are linked, and thus, affected by selection targeting any aspect of organismal biology. However, these links are understudied in tropical marine fishes, and further work is needed to better understand the impacts of fisheries and climate change on wild stocks.

Movement systems are massively redundant, and there are always multiple movement solutions to any task demand; motor abundance. Movement consequently exhibits 'repetition without repetition', where movement outcomes are preserved but the kinematic details of the movement vary across repetitions. Previous work has investigated the information-based mechanism for learning and transfer of learning in coordinated rhythmic movements. In those papers, we trained young adults to produce either 90° or 60° and showed in both cases that learning entailed learning to use relative position as information for the relative phase. This variable then supported transfer of learning to untrained coordinations +/30° on either side.

Animal data indicate that insulin triggers a robust nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-mediated dilation in cerebral arteries similar to the peripheral tissue vasodilation observed in healthy adults. Insulin's role in regulating cerebral blood flow (CBF) in humans remains unclear but may be important for understanding the links between insulin resistance, diminished CBF, and poor brain health outcomes. We tested the hypothesis that an oral glucose challenge (oral glucose tolerance test, OGTT), which increases systemic insulin and glucose, would acutely increase CBF in healthy adults due to NOS-mediated vasodilation, and that changes in CBF would be greater in anterior regions where NOS expression or activity may be greater.

Empirical measurements of solution vapor pressure of ternary acetonitrile (MeCN) HO-NaCl-MeCN mixtures were recorded, with NaCl concentrations ranging from zero to the saturation limit, and MeCN concentrations ranging from zero to an absolute mole fraction of 0.64. After accounting for speciation, the variability of the Henry's law coefficient at vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of MeCN ternary mixtures decreased from 107% to 5.

This Editorial provides summaries and an overview of research and review articles published in the journal, volumes 21 (2021), 22 (2022), and 23 (2023), within the biomedical Special Issue "Portable Electronic-Nose Devices for Noninvasive Early Disease Detection", which focused on recent sensors, biosensors, and clinical instruments developed for noninvasive early detection and diagnosis of human and animal diseases. The ten articles published in this Special Issue provide new information associated with recent electronic-nose (e-nose) and related volatile organic compound (VOC)-detection technologies developed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of diagnostic methodologies for early disease detection prior to symptom development. For review purposes, the summarized articles were placed into three broad groupings or topic areas, including veterinary-wildlife pathology, human clinical pathology, and the detection of dietary effects on VOC emissions.

is an endangered shrub indigenous to the broadleaf forest of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV). In this region, extant colonies of the species are found in periodically ponded habitats where a diversity of broadleaf trees can form well-developed overstory and sub-canopies-these habitat characteristics suggest that soil flooding and light availability are primary drivers of ecophysiology. To understand how these two factors affect its photosynthetic capacity, we quantified leaf characteristics and photosynthetic response of plants grown in a large-scaled, field setting of three distinct soil flooding levels (no flood, 0 day; short-term flood, 45 days; and extended flood, 90 days) each containing three distinct light availability levels (high light, 30% shade cloth; intermediate light, 63% shade cloth; and low light, 95% shade cloth).

Research from terrestrial communities shows that diminished predation risk is a principal driver of heterospecific grouping behavior, with foraging ecology predicting the roles that species play in groups, as more vulnerable foragers preferentially join more vigilant ones from whom they can benefit. The established efficacy of electronic volatile organic compound (VOC) detection technologies as diagnostic tools for noninvasive early detection of COVID-19 and related coronaviruses has been demonstrated from multiple studies using a variety of experimental and commercial electronic devices capable of detecting precise mixtures of VOC emissions in human breath. The activities of numerous global research teams, developing novel electronic-nose (e-nose) devices and diagnostic methods, have generated empirical laboratory and clinical trial test results based on the detection of different types of host VOC-biomarker metabolites from specific chemical classes. This work reports a dimethyl ether-driven fractional crystallization process for separating rare earth elements and transition metals. The process has been successfully applied in the treatment of rare earth element-bearing permanent magnet leachates as an atom-efficient, reagent-free separation method. Analysis of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions using electronic-nose (e-nose) devices has shown promise for early detection of white-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats. Tricolored bats, , from three separate sampling groups defined by environmental conditions, levels of physical activity, and WNS-disease status were captured temporarily for collection of VOC emissions to determine relationships between these combinations of factors and physiological states, (Pd)-infection status, and metabolic conditions. Aims: In cardiomyocytes, acute disturbances to intracellular pH (pHi) are promptly corrected by a system of finely tuned sarcolemmal acid-base transporters. However, these fluxes become thermodynamically re-balanced in acidic environments, which inadvertently causes their set-point pHi to fall outside the physiological range. Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia type 1 (CPVT1) is a lethal genetic disease causing arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in children and young adults and is linked to mutations in the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR2). The effects of CPVT1 mutations on RyR2 ion-channel function are often investigated using purified recombinant RyR2 channels homozygous for the mutation. However, CPVT1 patients are heterozygous for the disease, so this approach does not reveal the true changes to RyR2 function across the entire RyR2 population of channels in the heart.
