China is the country with the largest population of older persons. Depression is the most common mental health issue among older adults, a trend expected to increase as societies continue to age. With the global increase in depression and depressive symptoms among this demographic, the resulting disease burden poses a significant challenge to health and social care systems in China.

Unifying Subicular Function: A Predictive Map Approach.

The successor representation has emerged as a powerful model for understanding mammalian navigation and memory; explaining the spatial coding properties of hippocampal place cells and entorhinal grid cells. However, the diverse spatial responses of subicular neurons, the primary output of the hippocampus, have eluded a unified account. Here, we demonstrate that incorporating rodent behavioural biases into the successor representation successfully reproduces the heterogeneous activity patterns of subicular neurons.

Rationale: Alcohol exposure during adolescence has been linked to long-lasting behavioral consequences, contributing to the development of alcohol use disorder. Negative affect and chronic pain during alcohol withdrawal are critical factors influencing problematic alcohol use and relapse. Our previous research demonstrated that adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) vapor exposure elicits sex-specific negative affect-like behavior in adult mice following stress exposure.

Introduction: There has been an increasing amount of research on the consequences of e-cigarette use for respiratory outcomes, which is significant for public health and respiratory medicine. We discuss recent findings and lay out implications for prevention and treatment.

Areas Covered: Based on literature searches using several databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar) for keywords, including synonyms, 'e-cigarettes,' with 'pulmonary function,' 'oxidative stress,' and 'inflammation,' we review studies on acute effects of e-cigarette use for measures of pulmonary function and discuss selected laboratory studies on mechanisms of effect, focusing on processes with known relation to respiratory disease; oxidative stress and inflammation.

Boundaries to movement form a specific class of landmark information used for navigation: Boundary Vector Cells (BVCs) are neurons which encode an animal's location as a vector displacement from boundaries. Here we characterise the prevalence and spatial tuning of subiculum BVCs in adult and developing male rats, and investigate the relationship between BVC spatial firing and boundary geometry. BVC directional tunings align with environment walls in squares, but are uniformly distributed in circles, demonstrating that environmental geometry alters BVC receptive fields.

Methods: We tested the acute and lasting effects of chronic adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE) exposure on pain-related behavioral and brain changes in male and female rats.

Ethnic differences in respiratory disease for Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders: Analysis of mediation processes in two community samples.

Objective: The prevalence of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) is elevated for Native Hawaiians but the basis for this differential is not well understood. We analyze data on asthma and COPD in two samples including Native Hawaiians Pacific Islanders, and Filipinos to determine how ethnicity is related to respiratory disease outcomes.

Methods: We analyzed the 2016 and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), a telephone survey of participants ages 18 and over in the State of Hawaii.

Knowledge about the respiratory health consequences of adolescents' use of tobacco products with cannabis remains limited. We studied whether e-cigarettes, combustible cigarettes, and cannabis were independently associated with asthma in a population-based sample of 150,634 public high school students (10th and 12th graders), drawn in a two-stage design to be representative of the state of California in 2019-2020. Measures were obtained for use of e-cigarettes, combustible cigarettes, and cannabis; motives for use (three substances); method of use (for cannabis); ever being diagnosed with asthma; and having an asthma attack in past 12 months.

Introduction: Research has rarely examined ethnic differences in exposure to coronavirus disease (COVID)-related stress in relation to smoking and e-cigarette use.

Aims And Methods: Using pre- and post-COVID data from a sample of predominantly Asian American (AA) and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) young adults, this study aimed to test the effects of ethnicity on cigarette smoking and e-cigarette use through exposure to COVID-related stress. Young adults from Hawaii who provided pre-COVID data in or before January 2020 were followed up with in March-May 2021.

Development of a pilot interprofessional education workshop for healthcare students and assessment of interprofessional collaborative competency attainment.

We describe the development and student evaluation of a collaborative health service provider and higher education institution initiative designed to deliver an Interprofessional Education (IPE) pilot workshop program for healthcare students. The aim was to investigate whether an IPE workshop would result in improved student confidence in self-reported interprofessional competencies using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Scale (ICCAS) tool. The workshops involved interprofessional student groups working on a patient case followed by a facilitator-led discussion and patient representative interaction.

The conversion of polyolefins to monomers would create a valuable carbon feedstock from the largest fraction of waste plastic. However, breakdown of the main chains in these polymers requires the cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds that tend to resist selective chemical transformations.
