We report the isolation and analysis of the rapidly reassociating DNA of the pathogenic, dimorphic fungus Candida albicans. Minicot analysis of whole-cell repetitive DNA suggested that a significant portion of this component was mitochondrial DNA. Genomic blot hybridizations in which radioactive whole-cell repetitive DNA was used as a probe revealed eight major EcoRI bands in the molecular weight range resolved by the gel system used.

The Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee (GMENAC) adjusted needs-based model for determining physician requirements was applied to the specialties of anesthesiology, neurology, nuclear medicine, pathology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and radiology, which had not been completed at the time of the original GMENAC final report. Physical medicine and rehabilitation continues to be projected as a shortage specialty; anesthesiology is in near balance. Neurology and pathology are no longer projected to be specialties of oversupply, but rather to be in near balance.

Percutaneous gastrostomy was performed in 7 patients using standard interventional techniques. The procedure was successful in 6 patients but was terminated in the seventh patient because of pain. In 5 cases, feeding posed no difficulty; one patient had outlet obstruction, perhaps related to a duodenal ulcer.

The env gene of Rous sarcoma virus codes for two glycoproteins which are located on the surface of infectious virions. Subcloning of these coding sequences in the place of the late region of SV40 DNA has allowed the expression of a normally glycosylated, functionally active glycoprotein complex on the surface of monkey cells. Through the use of site-directed mutagenesis, the role of specific amino acids in the signal peptide, signal peptidase cleavage site, and membrane anchor region have been investigated.

Candida albicans is a dimorphic fungus that is pathogenic for humans. No sexual cycle has been reported for this fungus, and earlier reports have differed on whether typical strains of C. albicans are haploid or diploid.

Analysis of data from 12 countries revealed that 61.3% of cases of primary cancer of the upper respiratory tract, and 78.5% of those classified as adenocarcinoma, observed in areas in which furniture making or other manipulation of wood was an important occupation, had occurred in woodworkers.

Ophthalmology manpower requirements estimates presented to the Graduate Medical Education National Advisory Committee (GMENAC) are explained and compared to previous estimates published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Both studies used similar methods but reached different conclusions; the reasons for this are explored and shown to be due principally to (1) differences in projected hours per week spent in patients care by ophthalmologists, and (2) differences in the medical workload traceable to differences in estimated visit time and needs for care in the area of systemic ophthalmology. The manpower implications of the principal contributors to the ophthalmology workload are examined, and differences between the two studies regarding these conditions are documented. Areas for further research are suggested.

A case of malignant testicular tumor which originated in the Sertoli cells is reported. Metastases were studied by aortography and computerized axial tomography. The tumor presented no clinical evidence of hormonal activity and a long recurrence-free survival.

Cholesteatoma of the urinary tract is a rare condition which can be diagnosed radiographically. The radiographic findings of stringy intraluminal defects or nodules that may lightly calcify or coalesce to form a discrete mass in association with calculi and/or obstruction are characteristic. A history of chronic urinary tract infection, renal colic, and desquamated epithelial cells in the urine further support the diagnosis.

Three patients with pyloric channel ulcers presenting a diagnostic challenge on double-contrast gastrography are reported. These ulcers might have been overlooked had not films of the pyloric region been obtained when the ulcer was filled with barium. The air contrast examination of the distal stomach should be supplemented by the components of the conventional examination likely to show a pyloric channel ulcer as a barium-filled crater.

Papillary adenocarcinoma of the kidney is an uncommon variant of renal tubular carcinoma, which on radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation presents characteristically as a predominantly solid hypovascular or avascular mass. Surgery is required to distinguish this lesion from other solid renal lesions, which differs from the more common form of renal tubular carcinoma in several important respects.

The authors describe a simple technique for establishing satisfactory position of the needle in the shoulder joint for arthrography. Local anesthetic is placed in the hub of the spinal needle and is often drawn into the joint when the needle enters, causing a sudden drop in the fluid level.
