Diving into the vertical dimension of elasmobranch movement ecology.

Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understand their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species.

Saliva-based SARS-CoV-2 serology using at-home collection kits returned via mail.

Serology provides tools for epidemiologic studies, and may have a role in vaccine prioritization and selection. Automated serologic testing of saliva, especially specimens that are self-collected at home and sent to a laboratory via the mail without refrigeration, could be a highly-scalable strategy for population-wide testing. In this prospective study, non-vaccinated patients were recruited after PCR testing to self-collect saliva and return their specimens via mail.

Background: Nurse practitioner (NP) faculty assess student acquisition of knowledge through examinations, simulation, and clinical performance.

Problem: Developing appropriately leveled curriculum, assessments, and clinical expectations that accurately capture student maturation presents a challenge.

Approach: The Reporter, Interpreter, Manager, Educator (RIME) provided the framework for doctor of nursing practice NP curriculum redesign to enhance student performance and content mastery.

Genetic confirmation of a hybrid between two highly divergent cardinalid species: A rose-breasted grosbeak () and a scarlet tanager ().

Using low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, analysis of vocalizations, and inferences from natural history, we document a first-generation hybrid between a rose-breasted grosbeak () and a scarlet tanager (). These two species occur sympatrically throughout much of eastern North America, although were not previously known to interbreed. Following the field identification of a putative hybrid, we use genetic and bioacoustic data to show that a rose-breasted grosbeak was the maternal parent and a scarlet tanager was the paternal parent of the hybrid, whose song was similar to the latter species.

Reversal of collateral ventilation using endoscopic polymer foam in COPD patients undergoing endoscopic lung volume reduction with endobronchial valves: A controlled parallel group trial.

Background And Objective: We have previously described reversal of collateral ventilation (CV) in a severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patient with endoscopic polymer foam (EPF), prior to endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) with valves. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of this in a larger cohort and compare outcomes with a similar cohort with no CV.

Methods: Patients with severe COPD, with the left upper lobe (LUL) targeted for ELVR, were assessed for CV with high resolution computed tomography (HRCT).

Improving parlor efficiency in block calving pasture-based dairy systems through the application of a fixed milking time determined by daily milk yield and milking frequency.

Adjusting end-of-milking criteria, in particular applying a maximum milking time determined by expected milk yield at an individual milking session, is one strategy to optimize parlor efficiency. However, this strategy can be difficult to apply practically on farm due to large differences in session milk yield, driven by milking interval, which affects milking routines and can be limited by in-parlor technology. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that a single fixed milking time (duration) could be applied at all milking sessions without compromising milk production or udder health for a range of milking intervals.

Background: Next-generation sequencing is used in cancer research to identify somatic and germline mutations, which can predict sensitivity or resistance to therapies, and may be a useful tool to reveal drug repurposing opportunities between tumour types. Multigene panels are used in clinical practice for detecting targetable mutations. However, the value of clinical whole-exome sequencing (WES) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) for cancer care is less defined, specifically as the majority of variants found using these technologies are of uncertain significance.

Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment or Probable Dementia in New Users of Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers and Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors: A Secondary Analysis of Data From the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT).

Importance: The cardiovascular and renal outcomes of angiotensin-II receptor blocker (ARB) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) treatment are well-known; however, few studies have evaluated initiation of these agents and cognitive impairment.

Objective: To emulate a target trial to evaluate the cognitive outcomes of initiating an ARB- vs ACEI-based antihypertensive regimen in individuals at risk for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and probable dementia (PD).

Design, Setting, And Participants: Active comparator, new-user observational cohort study design using data from the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT), conducted November 2010 through July 2018.

Introduction: Healthy persons demonstrate an upward bias on the vertical-line bisection test (vertical or "altitudinal" pseudoneglect). This bias might be sensory-attentional or action-intentional in origin. To test the action-intention hypothesis, we analyze whether the direction of action has an effect on altitudinal pseudoneglect.

Vascular and microstructural markers of cognitive pathology.

Introduction: Arterial stiffness may play a role in the development of dementia through poorly understood effects on brain microstructural integrity and perfusion.

Methods: We examined markers of arterial stiffness (carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity [cfPWV]) and elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP) in relation to cognitive function and brain magnetic resonance imaging macrostructure (gray matter [GM] and white matter [WM] volumes), microstructure (diffusion based free water [FW] and fractional anisotropy [FA]), and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in WM and GM in models adjusted for age, race, sex, education, and apolipoprotein E ε4 status.

Results: Among 460 participants (70 ± 8 years; 44 dementia, 158 mild cognitive impairment, 258 normal cognition), higher cfPWV and SBP were independently associated with higher FW, higher WM hyperintensity volume, and worse cognition (global and executive function).

Why do some people tend to drive faster than others? Personality characteristics such as the evaluation of risk to oneself or to others, impulsivity, adherence to norms, but also other personal factors such as gender, age, or driving experience all may play a role in determining how fast people drive. Since driving speed is a critical factor underlying accident prevalence, identifying the psychological metrics to predict individual driving speed is an important step that could aid in accident prevention. Managing wildlife populations in the face of global change requires regular data on the abundance and distribution of wild animals, but acquiring these over appropriate spatial scales in a sustainable way has proven challenging. Here we present the data from Snapshot USA 2020, a second annual national mammal survey of the USA. This project involved 152 scientists setting camera traps in a standardized protocol at 1485 locations across 103 arrays in 43 states for a total of 52,710 trap-nights of survey effort.

Examination of the spawning and maturity traits of coexisting Platycephalus caeruleopunctatus, Platycephalus grandispinis and Platycephalus richardsoni (Pisces: Platycephalidae) in coastal waters of southeastern Australia identified many commonalities. Each species was gonochoristic, reproductively active for a prolonged period each year, displayed asynchronous oocyte development with indeterminate fecundity and thus likely spawned multiple times throughout each spawning season. Males of all three species matured at smaller total lengths and younger ages than females, with skewed sex ratios reflecting divergent growth characteristics between sexes.

Patient and clinician nudges to improve symptom management in advanced cancer using patient-generated health data: study protocol for the PROStep randomised controlled trial.

Introduction: Patients with advanced cancers often face significant symptoms from their cancer and adverse effects from cancer-associated therapy. Patient-generated health data (PGHD) are routinely collected information about symptoms and activity levels that patients either directly report or passively record using devices such as wearable accelerometers.
