Snakebite envenomation (SBE) is a life-threatening medical emergency with a high mortality rate. Common secondary complications following SBE, such as wound infections, are significant due to their impact on worsening local tissue damage and causing systemic infection. Antivenoms are not effective to treat wound infections following SBE.

Article Synopsis
  • Agriculture impacts flooding differently based on land elevation, with low lands focusing on soil compaction and uplands on afforestation, while the issue of soil acidification from inadequate liming is often ignored.
  • In Wales, nearly 20% of upland grasslands are at risk of acidification, particularly on steep slopes where reduced water infiltration may lead to increased runoff and flood risk.
  • Research shows that acidic soils have significantly lower infiltration rates and fewer earthworms, which are crucial for water retention; therefore, understanding soil health is vital for flood risk modeling.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examined whether early and enhanced treatment of atopic dermatitis, covering both affected and unaffected skin with topical corticosteroids, is more effective in preventing hen's egg allergy compared to standard treatment focused only on affected areas.
  • The trial involved 650 infants aged 7-13 weeks with atopic dermatitis, who were randomly assigned to receive either enhanced or conventional treatment, and found that enhanced treatment significantly lowered the rate of hen's egg allergy.
  • However, while the enhanced treatment was effective in reducing allergy rates (31.4% vs. 41.9%), it also resulted in notable reductions in body weight and height, indicating a need for adjustments in treatment protocols to balance efficacy with safety.

Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM) taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are recommended to have screening for asymptomatic chlamydia and gonorrhoea every 3months with high rates of asymptomatic chlamydia and gonorrhoea detected. However, there is little evidence about the effectiveness of this screening interval and there is increasing concern about antibiotic consumption and its impact on antimicrobial resistance. There have been calls to reconsider this frequent screening for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

The lavas associated with mantle plumes may sample domains throughout Earth's mantle and probe its dynamics. However, plume studies are often only able to take snapshots in time, usually of the most recent plume activity, leaving the chemical and geodynamic evolution of major convective upwellings in Earth's mantle poorly constrained. Here, we report the geodynamically key information of how the lithology and density of a plume change from plume head phase to tail.

The E4 allele of Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is associated with both metabolic dysfunction and a heightened pro-inflammatory response: two findings that may be intrinsically linked through the concept of immunometabolism. Here, we combined bulk, single-cell, and spatial transcriptomics with cell-specific and spatially resolved metabolic analyses in mice expressing human APOE to systematically address the role of APOE across age, neuroinflammation, and AD pathology. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) highlighted immunometabolic changes across the APOE4 glial transcriptome, specifically in subsets of metabolically distinct microglia enriched in the E4 brain during aging or following an inflammatory challenge.

Introduction: Early stage gastric cancer, particularly T1 disease, is associated with high recurrence-free and overall survival rates following resection with curative intent. However, rare cases of T1 gastric cancer have nodal metastasis and this is associated with poor outcomes.

Methods: Data from gastric cancer patients treated with surgical resection and D2 lymph node (LN) dissection at a single tertiary care institution from 2010 to 2020 were analyzed.

Article Synopsis
  • Snakebite envenomation (SBE) management is tough in developing tropical regions due to complex symptoms and poor medical resources, with some snakes like the Indian Russell's viper causing rare complications.
  • A case is discussed where a patient bitten by a Russell's viper experienced serious issues like adrenal and pituitary hemorrhages, despite receiving antivenom and other treatments.
  • The patient ultimately recovered after receiving hydrocortisone and thyroxine, highlighting the need for better awareness and treatment strategies for rare complications of snakebites.

Apolipoprotein E4 (APOE4) is the strongest risk allele associated with the development of late onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Across the CNS, astrocytes are the predominant expressor of while also being critical mediators of neuroinflammation and cerebral metabolism. APOE4 has been consistently linked with dysfunctional inflammation and metabolic processes, yet insights into the molecular constituents driving these responses remain unclear.

COVID-19 represents a multi-system infectious disease with broad-spectrum manifestations, including changes in host metabolic processes connected to the disease pathogenesis. Understanding biochemical dysregulation patterns as a consequence of COVID-19 illness promises to be crucial for tracking disease course and clinical outcomes. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has attracted considerable interest in biomedical diagnostics for the sensitive detection of intrinsic profiles of unique fingerprints of serum biomolecules indicative of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a label-free format.

Background: There is a lack of well-conducted randomized controlled trials evaluating the effectiveness of theory-based online interventions for eczema. To address these deficiencies, we previously developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of two online behavioural interventions: Eczema Care Online for parents/carers of children with eczema, and Eczema Care Online for young people with eczema.

Objectives: To explore the views and experiences of people who have used the Eczema Care Online interventions to provide insights into how the interventions worked and identify contextual factors that may impede users' engagement with the interventions.

The effect of monosaccharides (glucose, fructose and galactose) and disaccharides (sucrose and lactose) at 10, 20 and 30 % w/v on the in-vitro aroma partitioning of C - C aldehydes and ethyl esters, as well as limonene (concentration of aroma compounds at 1 μg mL), was studied using atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation-mass spectrometry. An increase in sugar concentration from 0 to 30 % w/v resulted in a significant increase in partitioning under static headspace conditions for the majority of the compounds (p < 0.05), an effect generally not observed when 10 % w/v sucrose was substituted with low-calorie sweeteners (p > 0.

Background: Late vein graft failure is caused by intimal thickening resulting from endothelial cell (EC) damage and inflammation which promotes vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) dedifferentiation, migration, and proliferation. Nonphosphorylatable PRH (proline-rich homeodomain) S163C:S177C offers enhanced stability and sustained antimitotic effect. Therefore, we investigated whether adenovirus-delivered PRH S163C:S177C protein attenuates intimal thickening via VSMC phenotype modification without detrimental effects on ECs.

Snakebite envenomation causes systemic and local manifestations, which result from the individual or synergistic actions of multiple venom components. The pathological hallmarks of medically important venomous snakes such as the Indian Russell's viper (Daboia russelii) are well known. Envenomation by Russell's viper is typically characterised by coagulopathies, muscular damage, nephrotoxicity, and neurotoxicity.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a phenuivirus that has rapidly become endemic in several East Asian countries. The large (L) protein of SFTSV, which includes the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), is responsible for catalysing viral genome replication and transcription. Here, we present 5 cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of the L protein in several states of the genome replication process, from pre-initiation to late-stage elongation, at a resolution of up to 2.

Bunyaviruses are negative sense, single-strand RNA viruses that infect a wide range of vertebrate, invertebrate and plant hosts. WHO lists three bunyavirus diseases as priority diseases requiring urgent development of medical countermeasures highlighting their high epidemic potential. While the viral large (L) protein containing the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase is a key enzyme in the viral replication cycle and therefore a suitable drug target, our knowledge on the structure and activities of this multifunctional protein has, until recently, been very limited.
