Article Synopsis
  • This paper builds on a previous study to improve the diagnostic capabilities of inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) for large naval vessels by precisely determining the positions of key radio-frequency scatterers.
  • The study introduces specialized signal processing techniques to manage simultaneous Doppler returns from changes in both roll and aspect angles using generalized ISAR rates.
  • It also outlines two new interferometric ISAR (InSAR) techniques corresponding to different ISAR plot interpretations, demonstrating their effectiveness in identifying localized scatterers in simulated scenarios.

We describe a generalized inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) process that performs well under a wide variety of conditions common to the naval ISAR tests of large vessels. In particular, the generalized ISAR process performs well in the presence of moderate intensity ship roll. The process maps localized scatterers onto peaks on the ISAR plot.
