Background: Age, race, ethnicity, and sex are important determinants of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) outcomes. Older adults (65 years and older) are at the highest risk of COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. Analyzing their vaccine uptake by subclassifying demographics is rare and can assist vaccination policies.

Objectives/hypothesis: Two undesired effects of the aminoglycoside antibiotic gentamicin are ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. This study investigated if these adverse effects vary according to the circadian time of its administration.

Study Design: This study entails laboratory animal research.

Object: Earlier definitions of acute renal failure are not sensitive in identifying milder forms of acute kidney injury (AKI). The authors hypothesized that by applying the RIFLE criteria for acute renal failure (Risk of renal dysfunction, Injury to the kidney, Failure of kidney function, Loss of kidney function, and End-stage kidney disease) to thoracic and lumbar spine surgery, there would be a higher incidence of AKI. They also developed a model to predict the postoperative glomerular filtration rate (GFR).

The catalytic domains of class I aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases are built around a conserved Rossmann nucleotide binding fold, with additional polypeptide domains responsible for tRNA binding or hydrolytic editing of misacylated substrates. Structural comparisons identified a conserved motif bridging the catalytic and anticodon binding domains of class Ia and Ib enzymes. This stem contact fold (SCF) has been proposed to globally orient each enzyme's cognate tRNA by interacting with the inner corner of the L-shaped tRNA.

Hurricane Katrina of August 2005 forced more than one million people to evacuate the Gulf Coast of the United States. This study examines the psychological health and well-being of a subset of evacuees to determine the prevalence of ongoing mental health problems. Interviews were conducted with 101 adults who evacuated to Louisville, Kentucky, and were living in the state at the one-year anniversary of the event or had recently returned to the Gulf Coast.

Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often chronic and is often associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The importance of assessing disability and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in patients with MDD has only recently been recognized. The aim of this study was to examine sociodemographic and clinical correlates of HRQOL in a large cohort of outpatients with MDD.

Objective: Esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (EGD) is frequently performed in patients with heartburn. However, the benefit of an EGD is unclear. The objective is to determine the clinical impact of performing an EGD in the management of GERD.

This paper reviews evidence from both human and non-human primate studies concerning the role of early adverse experiences in the onset and course of adult depressive disorders. Despite accumulating evidence that stressful life events can play a major role in precipitating the onset of depressive episodes in humans, the mechanisms by which early experiences mediate and moderate the risk for later affective illnesses are not fully understood. Experimental paradigms in primates have documented the important role of undeveloped (social deprivation) or disrupted attachment systems (social separation).

Aprotinin has been reported to reduce plasma levels of inflammatory cytokines associated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Because CPB is also associated with elevated levels of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and LPS stimulates release of inflammatory cytokines from the heart we tested the hypothesis that aprotinin would inhibit cardiac release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) provoked by LPS. Isolated rat hearts were perfused Langendorf style.

Background And Purpose: Surgical decompression of the vascular loop of the vertebral artery (VA) at the left lateral medulla can reduce blood pressure (BP) in hypertension, and a larger diameter of the left VA has been found in hypertensive patients. Noninvasive evaluation of the VA in hypertension may assist selecting patients for more appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Duplex ultrasonography is used to study the relationship between VA diameter and BP.
