In this case report, potential interferences from an improvised fire-extinguishing agent, a dishwashing liquid, containing linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS), was studied. The presence of linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) in the fire debris sample was identified from the summed ion profile (SIP) analysis. It was found that the LAS from dishwashing liquids produce LABs by thermal degradation.

Nitride NW(N[i-Pr]Ar)3 (1, Ar = 3,5-C6H3Me2) was synthesized in two steps from known NW(O-t-Bu)3 (41% overall yield). Complex 1 is the tungsten congener of NMo(N[i-Pr]Ar)3, a known molecule that has been synthesized using N2 as the nitrido nitrogen source, but which undergoes no reaction with pivaloyl chloride. Compound 1 undergoes metathesis with pivaloyl chloride at 25 degrees C to form the corresponding nitrile in 97% yield.

Three new tetramines, (ArNHCH(2)CH(2))(3)N, have been synthesized in which Ar = 3,5-(2,4,6-t-Bu(3)C(6)H(2))(2)C(6)H(3) (H(3)[HTBTN(3)N]), 3,5-(2,4,6-Me(3)C(6)H(2))(2)C(6)H(3) (H(3)[HMTN(3)N]), or 4-Br-3,5-(2,4,6-i-Pr(3)C(6)H(2))(2)C(6)H(2) (H(3)[pBrHIPTN(3)N]). The diarylated tetramine, [3,5-(2,4,6-t-Bu(3)C(6)H(2))(2)C(6)H(3)NHCH(2)CH(2)](2)NCH(2)CH(2)NH(2), has also been isolated, and the "hybrid" tetramine [3,5-(2,4,6-t-Bu(3)C(6)H(2))(2)C(6)H(3)NHCH(2)CH(2)](2)NCH(2)CH(2)NH(4-t-BuC(6)H(4)) has been prepared from it. Monochloride complexes, [(TerNCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]MoCl, have been prepared, as well as a selection of intermediates that would be expected in a catalytic dinitrogen reduction such as [(TerNCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]Mo[triple bond]N and [[(TerNCH(2)CH(2))(3)N]Mo(NH(3))][BAr'(4)] (Ter = HTBT, HMT, or pBrHIPT and Ar' = 3,5-(CF(3))(2)C(6)H(3))).

The aza-Wittig reaction between Ar(f)()-N=PPh(3) [Ar(f)() = 3,5-(CF(3))(2)C(6)H(3)] and 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione affords a new, highly fluorinated beta-diketimine, 1. Metalation by mesitylcopper(I) in benzene gives rise to the Cu(I) beta-diketiminate as its eta(2)-benzene adduct, 2a. Copper(I) carbonyl complexes of 1, and of three less-fluorinated analogues, have been generated in situ and compared by IR spectroscopy; the two backbone CF(3) groups exert a stronger electronic influence than the four N-aryl CF(3) groups.

We have synthesized a triamidoamine ligand ([(RNCH(2)CH(2))(3)N](3)(-)) in which R is 3,5-(2,4,6-i-Pr(3)C(6)H(2))(2)C(6)H(3) (hexaisopropylterphenyl or HIPT). The reaction between MoCl(4)(THF)(2) and H(3)[HIPTN(3)N] in THF followed by 3.1 equiv of LiN(SiMe(3))(2) led to formation of orange [HIPTN(3)N]MoCl.

N-(2-Mercaptoethyl)picolylamine (MEPAH) was studied as a potentially biologically relevant ligand for the "fac-[M(CO)(3)](+)" core (M = Re, (99)Tc, (99m)Tc). To this end, the complex Re(CO)(3)(MEPA) was synthesized. The reaction of MEPAH with fac-[Re(CO)(3)(MeCN)(3)](+) took place over the course of seconds, showing the high affinity possessed by this ligand for the "fac-[Re(CO)(3)](+)" core.

The reduction of ammonium pertechnetate with bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), and with diphenyl-2-pyridyl phosphine (Ph(2)Ppy), has been investigated. The neutral Tc(II) complex, trans-TcCl(2)(dppm)(2) (1), has been isolated from the reaction of (NH(4))[TcO(4)] with excess dppm in refluxing EtOH/HCl. Chemical oxidation with ferricinium hexafluorophosphate results in formation of the cationic Tc(III) analogue, trans-[TcCl(2)(dppm)(2)](PF(6)) (2).

A new route to low-valent technetium complexes containing multiple acetonitrile ligands has been developed. The reduction of TcCl(4)(PPh(3))(2) with zinc metal dust in acetonitrile results in the formation of [Tc(CH(3)CN)(4)(PPh(3))(2)][Zn(2)Cl(6)](1/2). The hexafluorophosphate salt of the analogous Tc(II) cation can be prepared via chemical oxidation of the Tc(I) species, and the Tc(I) cation can be regenerated via chemical reduction.

The organohydrazide chelate complexes M(III)(NNpy)(PPh(3))(2)Cl(2) (1, 3) (M = Re, Tc) have been synthesized using the organohydrazine 2-hydrazinopyridine. The chelated organohydrazide is a diazenido(1-) ligand that forms a five-membered ring with the metal center. An X-ray structural analysis of 1 indicates that there is a delocalized pi-system formed by the chelate ring.
