Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy Related to Alcoholic Hepatitis.

A 33-year-old woman admitted for acute alcoholic hepatitis was referred to the ophthalmology department with an acute onset paracentral scotoma of the left eye. On examination, best-corrected visual acuity was Snellen 6/4 in the right eye and 6/9 in the left eye. Dilated left fundus examination revealed wedge-shaped changes at the macula.

Purpose: To report the outcomes of eyes receiving surgical management for traumatic macular holes. Methods: Retrospective study of patients undergoing vitrectomy for traumatic macular hole and entered into the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists surgical registry.

Bilateral Diffuse Uveal Melanocytic Proliferation Associated With Bladder Cancer: A Novel Imaging Finding.

The authors report a case of bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation associated with transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder. A novel imaging finding on indocyanine green angiography of a "string of sausages" pattern in the large choroidal vessels is described. This occurs in areas of alternating retinal pigment epithelial hypertrophy and destruction, which is likely to be its cause.

The Visual Outcomes of Macular Hole Surgery: A Registry-Based Study by the Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists.

Purpose: To present the visual and safety outcomes of surgery for primary idiopathic macular holes including predictors of visual acuity and the impact of combined phacovitrectomy surgery.

Design: Registry-style, prospective, nonrandomized, observational cohort study.

Participants: Patients with idiopathic macular holes undergoing primary surgery.

Outcomes of Eyes with Failed Primary Surgery for Idiopathic Macular Hole.

Purpose: To describe the anatomic and visual outcomes of eyes undergoing reoperation after failed primary surgery for idiopathic macular hole.

Design: Prospective registry study.

Participants: One hundred three patients who had undergone failed macular hole surgery.

AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND STUDY OF PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY IN CHOROIDAL AMELANOTIC MELANOMA.

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of primary photodynamic therapy (PDT) for posterior choroidal amelanotic melanomas.

Methods: Patients with posterior choroidal amelanotic melanomas up to 6 mm in height were treated with PDT using verteporfin as the photosensitizing agent. Treatment was repeated every 3 months until the tumor was flat up to a maximum of 6 treatments.

MANAGEMENT OF GIANT RETINAL TEARS USING TRANSSCLERAL DIODE LASER RETINOPEXY AND SHORT-TERM POSTOPERATIVE TAMPONADE WITH PERFLUORO-N-OCTANE.

Purpose: To determine the results of pars plana vitrectomy for giant retinal tear detachments using transscleral diode laser retinopexy and short-term postoperative tamponade with perfluoro-n-octane (PFnO).

Methods: Twenty consecutive patients with fresh giant retinal tears were enrolled in a single-arm prospective study. One case was withdrawn for technical reasons.

Design: Retrospective, cohort study of consecutive open globe injuries presenting to a tertiary referral eye hospital from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2011.

Avastin as an adjunct to vitrectomy in the management of severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy: a prospective case series.

Purpose: Bevacizumab (Avastin) is a monoclonal antibody which targets all isoforms of vascular endothelial growth factor A. Its potent anti-angiogenic effects have been shown to cause regression of neovascularization in proliferative diabetic retinopathy. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of Avastin as an adjunct to vitrectomy in the management of severe diabetic eye disease.

Primary treatment of choroidal amelanotic melanoma with photodynamic therapy.

The management of choroidal melanoma involves a delicate balance between preserving vision and preventing metastasis. Plaque brachytherapy has become standard management of most small lesions; however, this can result in radiation retinopathy and optic neuropathy. Transpupillary thermotherapy avoids these side-effects; however, it can also result in visual loss and its effectiveness is limited in amelanotic lesions.

Addiction: a disease of volition caused by a cognitive impairment.

The common etiology of substance and behavioural addictions is one that suggests faulty volition caused by a cognitive impairment. A cognitive impairment that minimizes the recall of the negative effects of the addictive behaviour is viewed as necessary and causal to all addictions. The proposed definition for addiction clarifies the confusion associated with addictive disorders, explains the many variable presentations, and provides an explanation of comorbidity and treatment outcomes.

Endoscopic greater saphenous vein harvesting reduces the morbidity of coronary artery bypass surgery.

Background: Most coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) operations still involve the use of greater saphenous vein (GSV) for one or more grafts, even with the increasing use of arterial conduits for coronary revascularization. Wound complications from GSV harvesting are common, and sometimes severe. In order to reduce the morbidity of this procedure, we adopted a technique of endoscopic vein harvesting (EVH).
