CALMODULIN-LIKE 38 Regulates Hypoxia-Induced Autophagy of SUPPRESSOR OF GENE SILENCING 3 Bodies.

During the energy crisis associated with submergence stress, plants restrict mRNA translation and rapidly accumulate stress granules that act as storage hubs for arrested mRNA complexes. One of the proteins associated with hypoxia-induced stress granules in is the calcium-sensor protein CALMODULIN-LIKE 38 (CML38). Here, we show that SUPPRESSOR OF GENE SILENCING 3 (SGS3) is a CML38-binding protein, and that SGS3 and CML38 co-localize within hypoxia-induced RNA stress granule-like structures.

Kinetics and reaction engineering of levulinic acid production from aqueous glucose solutions.

We have developed a kinetic model for aqueous-phase production of levulinic acid from glucose using a homogeneous acid catalyst. The proposed model shows a good fit with experimental data collected in this study in a batch reactor. The model was also fitted to steady-state data obtained in a plug flow reactor (PFR) and a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR).

Microwave synthesis of SAPO-11 and AlPO-11: aspects of reactor engineering.

AlPO-11 and SAPO-11 are synthesized using microwave heating. The effects of precursor volume, reaction temperature, reactor geometry, stirring, applicator type and frequency on the microwave synthesis of SAPO-11 and AlPO-11 are studied. The nucleation time and crystallization rate are determined from crystallization curves for SAPO-11 (and/or AlPO-11), for the various parameters investigated.

Transcatheter cardiac fistula repair with the Amplatzer Duct Occluder: a case report and review.

Background: Clinically significant cardiac fistulas occur rarely and traditionally are surgically repaired. We describe the first known case of percutaneous closure of a left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) to left atrium (LA) fistula formed as the result of aortic valve replacement surgery.

Case Report: The patient was an 86-year-old woman with a history of aortic valve replacement who began complaining of shortness of breath 7 years later.

In situ SAXS/WAXS of zeolite microwave synthesis: NaY, NaA, and beta zeolites.

A custom waveguide apparatus is constructed to study the microwave synthesis of zeolites by in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). The WR-284 waveguide is used to heat precursor solutions using microwaves at a frequency of 2.45 GHz.

Sinoatrial nodal artery to right atrium fistula after myxoma excision.

Acquired coronary artery to cardiac chamber fistulas are rare. Angiographically detectable neovascularization associated with a cardiac myxoma occurs frequently. These vessels are incorporated into the atrial suture line during surgical excision.

Microwaves and sorption on oxides: a surface temperature investigation.

Microwave heating is not the same as conventional heating, and it is believed that this difference, the "microwave effect," may be interpreted to be due to selective, local heating. The temperature at the surface where sorption occurs is "effectively" greater than the measured solid or gas temperature. In these studies, measurements of the amounts of adsorption as functions of the partial pressures of a specific adsorbate in the presence of microwave irradiation were related to the conventional adsorption isotherms.

Microwave synthesis of nanoporous materials.

Studies in the last decade suggest that microwave energy may have a unique ability to influence chemical processes. These include chemical and materials syntheses as well as separations. Specifically, recent studies have documented a significantly reduced time for fabricating zeolites, mixed oxide and mesoporous molecular sieves by employing microwave energy.

Surgical repair of a chronic traumatic sternal fracture.

Chronic sternal fracture nonunion is usually reported after median sternotomy, but rarely after blunt chest trauma. Most traumatic fractures of the sternum are managed nonoperatively if they are asymptomatic and nondisplaced. Acute surgical therapy is indicated for debilitating chest pain usually associated with fracture displacement.

Surgical management of leiomyosarcoma of the mediastinum.

Leiomyosarcoma of the mediastinum is sufficiently rare; therefore therapeutic approaches are not well defined. Current therapy primarily rests with the thoracic surgeon. We report a single case of a large leiomyosarcoma of the mediastinum invading the heart and right lung.
