Introduction: Professional network connections among health professions faculty are essential for engagement, innovation, and productivity. The research question was, "How do strategies for developing a professional network of early career health professions faculty contribute to our understanding of effective guidance for scholarly productivity?"

Methods: The method was an explanatory sequential mixed method. Study participants were 50 full-time equivalent physical therapist faculty in their first 5 years at accredited institutions in the U.

From cassettes to digital, use of video in education has evolved. Supplemental digital media is a common educational adjunct within gross anatomy courses. As these aids have advanced technologically, so has production cost.

Effects of Leg Length, Sex, Laterality, and the Intermediate Femoral Cutaneous Nerve on Infrapatellar Innervation.

Background: An iatrogenic injury to the infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve (IPBSN) is a common precipitant of postoperative knee pain and hypoesthesia.

Purpose: To locate potential safe zones for incision by observing the patterns and pathway of the IPBSN while examining the relationship of its location to sex, laterality, and leg length.

Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study.

Use of Model-Informed Drug Development to Streamline Development of Long-Acting Products: Can These Successes Be Translated to Long-Acting Hormonal Contraceptives?

Long-acting contraceptives are the most effective reversible contraceptive methods. Increasing patients' access to these contraceptives may translate into fewer unintended pregnancies and lead to substantial individual and public health benefits. However, development of long-acting products can be complex and challenging.

Stylohyoid Syndrome.

A 26-year-old male presented with an ache deep to the angle of the left mandible and moderate, constant pain with swallowing, symptoms that had begun 3 years earlier. He was diagnosed with Eagle syndrome, characterized by cervical oropharynx pain due to an elongated styloid process. The patient consulted a physical therapist, who instructed the patient on a home exercise program based on imaging and examination findings.

Heterotopic Ossification Following Hip Arthroscopy.

A 21-year-old woman initiated physical therapy 4 days following hip arthroscopic labrum debridement and osteochondroplasty. During postoperative rehabilitation, the patient's status regressed. With persistent symptoms, at 10 weeks postsurgery a computed tomography scan revealed, as confirmed by radiographs, heterotopic ossification development.

An Anatomic Investigation of the Ober Test.

Background: Recent studies have questioned the importance of the iliotibial band (ITB) in lateral knee pain. The Ober test or modified Ober test is the most commonly recommended physical examination tool for assessment of ITB tightness. No studies support the validity of either Ober test for measuring ITB tightness.

Effect of obesity on the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives: an individual participant data meta-analysis.

Objective: The objective of this investigation was to assess the potential effect of obesity on the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (HCs).

Study Design: A meta-analysis was conducted using individual participant data directly from the Phase 3 clinical trials of combination oral contraceptives (COCs) rather than extracting summary data from literature. Trials selected were reviewed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2000 and 2012, conducted in North America, had more than six 28-day cycle equivalents of exposure, and had readily retrievable participant-level data.

T1 radiculopathy.

The patient was a 40-year-old man who had experienced a constant deep ache over his left T1-2 paravertebral muscle region. Following 2 weeks of physical therapist intervention with no improvement, the patient self-referred to a neurosurgeon. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical and upper thoracic spine regions was ordered and revealed a left paracentral disc protrusion at T1-2 that resulted in moderate left foraminal stenosis.

Aging effects on macadamia nut oil studied by electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry.

High-resolution electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is successfully used in the detailed molecular analysis of aged macadamia nut oils. The results are consistent with peroxide values, the current industry measure for rancidity, and provide detailed molecular information on the oxidative and hydrolytic degeneration of such oils. Mass analysis of macadamia oil samples stored for extended periods at 6 °C revealed that oils obtained by the cold press method are more susceptible to aging than those obtained using modified Soxhlet or accelerated solvent extraction methods.

Background And Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to raise physical therapist awareness of Horner syndrome as a "red flag" for immediate medical referral.

Case Description: A 45-year-old man sought physical therapy for examination and treatment of neck pain and headache symptoms 5 days after experiencing a whiplash-type injury while waterskiing. His complaints were similar to a prior condition diagnosed as occipital neuralgia that had successfully responded to education, cervical and thoracic joint mobilization, and exercise provided by a physical therapist.

Production and isolation of ligated metal(IV)-oxo ions by tandem mass spectrometry.

High valent metal(IV)-oxo species, [M(==O)(MeIm)(n)(OAc)](+) (M = Mn-Ni, MeIm = 1-methylimidazole, n = 1-2), which are relevant to biology and oxidative catalysis, were produced and isolated in gas-phase reactions of the metal(II) precursor ions [M(MeIm)(n)(OAc)](+) (M = Mn-Zn, n = 1-3) with ozone. The precursor ions [M(MeIm)(OAc)](+) and [M(MeIm)(2)(OAc)](+) were generated via collision-induced dissociation of the corresponding [M(MeIm)(3)(OAc)](+) ion. The dependence of ozone reactivity on metal and coordination number is discussed.

A comparative evaluation of teaching methods in an introductory neuroscience course for physical therapy students.

Background: The use of computer-based instruction (CBI) in physical therapy education is growing, but its effectiveness compared to lecture is undefined. This study compared CBI to lecture in an introductory neuroscience course for students in their first year of a 3 year professional program leading to the Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree.

Subjects: Twenty-eight students participated in 2003 and 34 in 2004.

Use of the Human Activity Profile for estimating fitness in persons with arthritis.

Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of the Human Activity Profile (HAP) in predicting estimated maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) in persons with arthritis and to evaluate the ability of 2 classification systems to distinguish individuals with arthritis who have poor fitness from those with average and above fitness.

Methods: Forty-four subjects with arthritis completed the HAP and a submaximal treadmill test. The adjusted activity score (AAS) was derived from responses on the HAP.

Are physical therapy clinical instructors teaching the Institute of Medicine core competencies? An exploratory investigation using student perceptions.

Unlabelled: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has recommended instituting clinical education reforms to ensure all health profession graduates acquire five core competencies; providing patient-centered care, working in interdisciplinary teams, employing evidence-based practice, applying quality improvement and utilizing informatics. The IOM has identified 28 specific skills associated with these competencies. This qualitative, exploratory study was conducted to begin to examine the extent to which physical therapy clinical instructors provide students with instruction the students perceived as promoting the acquisition of these skills.

Gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of metal-carbide cations MCn+ (M=Y and La; n=2, 4, and 6) with benzene and cyclohexane investigated by FTICR mass spectrometry and DFT calculations.

Yttrium- and lanthanum-carbide cluster cations YC(n)(+) and LaC(n)(+) (n = 2, 4, and 6) are generated by laser ablation of carbonaceous material containing Y(2)O(3) or La(2)O(3). YC(2)(+), YC(4)(+), LaC(2)(+), LaC(4)(+), and LaC(6)(+) are selected to undergo gas-phase ion-molecule reactions with benzene and cyclohexane. The FTICR mass spectrometry study shows that the reactions of YC(2)(+) and LaC(2)(+) with benzene produce three main series of cluster ions.

Monitoring reagent modification of charged SnxOy nanoclusters using Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry.

The ion-molecule reactions of laser-generated radical clusters SnxO(x+1)(-) (x = 1-6), SnxO(x-1)(+) (x = 1-6) and SnxOx(+) (x = 2, 3) with the reagents H2S and CH3OH have been investigated using FTICR-MS. For the hypermetallic cations SnxO(x-1)(+), the rates of the sulfur-for-oxygen substitution reactions with H2S appear to be sensitive to LDA/DFT-predicted oxygen binding modes, with mu3-O modes relatively inert with respect to mu-O conformations. The reactions of the hypometallic anions SnxO(x+1)(-) with H2S were dominated by proton transfer, although S-for-O substitution was observed to be kinetically competitive.

Stepwise synthesis of Gly-Gly-His on gold surfaces modified with mixed self-assembled monolayers.

Peptide-modified electrode surfaces have been shown to have excellent recognition properties for metal ions. An efficient method of screening a potential peptide for its selectivity for a given metal would involve the synthesis of the peptide directly on the electrode surface. This paper outlines a procedure in which the tripeptide Gly-Gly-His was synthesized one amino acid at a time on a gold surface modified with a self-assembled monolayer of the mixed alkanethiolates 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and 3-mercaptopropane (MP).

Effects of specific exercise instructions on abdominal muscle activity during trunk curl exercises.

Study Design: A repeated-measures, counterbalanced design.

Objectives: To test whether subjects could learn and retain the ability to alter the relative activity of abdominal muscle groups when performing trunk curl exercises.

Background: Although trunk curl exercises are widely prescribed, a disadvantage of trunk curls is that they primarily activate rectus abdominis, while the internal and external oblique abdominis muscles are considered to be more important contributors to lumbar stability.

Analysis of self-assembled monolayer interfaces by electrospray mass spectrometry: a gentle approach.

A general mass spectrometry technique for the characterization of alkanethiol-modified surfaces is presented. Alkanethiol self-assembled onto a gold surface (in this case, peptides were attached to the gold surface via a thiolate bond) was reductively desorbed in 0.05 M KOH in the presence of octadecyl-derivatized silica gel.

Exploring the use of the tripeptide Gly-Gly-his as a selective recognition element for the fabrication of electrochemical copper sensors.

The modification of electrodes with the tripeptide Gly-Gly-His for the detection of copper in water samples is described in detail. The tripeptide modified electrode was prepared by first self-assembling 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) onto the gold electrode followed by covalent attachment of the tripeptide to the self-assembled monolayer using carbodiimide coupling. The electrodes were characterized using electrochemistry, a newly developed mass-spectrometry method and quantum mechanical calculations.

Sub-ppt detection limits for copper ions with Gly-Gly-His modified electrodes.

An electrochemical metal ion sensor has been developed with a detection limit of less than 0.2 ppt by the covalent attachment of the tripeptide Gly-Gly-His as a recognition element to a 3-mercaptopropionic acid modified gold electrode.

Relative activity of abdominal muscles during commonly prescribed strengthening exercises.

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative electromyographic (EMG) activity of the upper and lower rectus abdominis and the external oblique muscles during 5 commonly performed abdominal strengthening exercises. Twenty-five healthy subjects participated in the study. EMG data were collected under isometric and dynamic conditions.
