Five experiments (combined = 4,915) tested the prediction that the moral boost of happiness would persist for social targets with moral failings. In Studies 1 and 2, White and Black participants, respectively, judged happy (versus unhappy) racist targets more morally good. Over the past decades, the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer has evolved dramatically due to improvements in diagnostic imaging, surgical technique, and the addition of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Fractionation of neoadjuvant radiotherapy with or without concurrent chemotherapy remains the subject of discussion and the question multiple recent trials have aimed to answer. In light of recent data and concern for locoregional recurrence, our institution favors long-course chemoradiation in most cases, especially in low-lying primaries, threatened circumferential resection margin, consideration of non-operative management, or if the surgeon has concerns for resectability.

Intertidal organisms must tolerate daily fluctuations in environmental parameters, and repeated exposure to co-occurring conditions may result in tolerance to multiple stressors correlating. The intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus experiences diurnal variation in dissolved oxygen levels and pH as the opposing processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration lead to coordinated highs during the day and lows at night. The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation was created to protect human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of harmful intrinsic properties of chemical substances on the European market. One of its central aims was the promotion of alternatives to animal testing, yet it has instead become a long tick-box list of in vivo experiments questionable relevance to human health outcomes despite a global trend towards new approach methods (NAMs) in chemical safety assessment. The Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS), proposed by the European Commission in 2020, is a golden opportunity to revise REACH in a significant and impactful way, yet proposals presented so far have significant negative animal welfare consequences.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common condition within sub-Saharan Africa and associated with high under-5 mortality (U5M). The American Society of Hematology instituted the Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa (CONSA) for SCD, a 7-country network of sites to implement standardized newborn hemoglobinopathy screening and early intervention for children with SCD in sub-Saharan Africa. CONSA's overall hypothesis is that early infant SCD screening and entry into standardized, continuous care will reduce U5M compared with historical estimates in the region.

The inclusion of warm-season grasses, such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) and eastern gamagrass (EG) (Tripsacum dactyloides), in vegetated buffer strips has been shown to mitigate herbicide contamination in runoff and increase herbicide degradation in soil. The mode of action by which buffer strip rhizospheres enhance herbicide degradation remains unclear, but microorganisms and phytochemicals are believed to facilitate degradation processes. The objectives of this study were to: 1) screen root extracts from seven switchgrass cultivars for the ability to degrade the herbicide atrazine (ATZ) in solution; 2) determine sorption coefficients (K) of the ATZ-degrading phytochemical 2-β-D-glucopyranosyloxy-4-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DBG) to soil and Ca-montmorillonite, and investigate if DBG or ATZ sorption alters degradation processes; and 3) quantify ATZ degradation rates and soil microbial response to ATZ application in mesocosms containing soil and select warm-season grasses.

Next generation risk assessment (NGRA) is an exposure-led, hypothesis-driven approach that has the potential to support animal-free safety decision-making. However, significant effort is needed to develop and test the in vitro and in silico (computational) approaches that underpin NGRA to enable confident application in a regulatory context.
