Report on two babies, 5 and 6 months old with severe salt depletion were admitted to our hospital with fever and gastro-enteritis. One of them failed to thrive despite normal nutrition, the other one had a protracted gastro-enteritis. Both of them had a great loss of weight, a strong dehydration and were in reduced general condition but without any signs of coma or cerebral seizures.

Cephalometric analysis has earned a vital role in the evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea. However, the normal measurements cited in the literature are not sex or race specific. Skeletal differences in sexes and races have been established.

Primary varicella-zoster-induced rhabdomyolysis.

Acute rhabdomyolysis after uncomplicated, primary varicella-zoster infection is a rare condition that is sparsely reported in the literature. We report a case of acute rhabdomyolysis due to varicella-zoster infection and review the literature regarding the etiology, diagnosis, and management of this potentially life-threatening condition. Rapid recognition, along with appropriate treatment, should result in an excellent recovery without adverse sequelae.

Contrast-enhanced doppler ultrasound for noninvasive assessment of pulmonary artery pressure during exercise in patients with chronic congestive heart failure.

Comparison of cephalometric analysis with ethnicity in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Many studies have documented significant craniomandibular abnormalities in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients. Recent literature clearly describes the cephalometric abnormalities commonly associated with OSAS. Studies have not evaluated specific cephalometric abnormalities that may contribute to OSAS by various ethnic groups.

Use of laser flaremetry to measure aqueous humor protein concentration in dogs.

The blood-aqueous barrier in dogs is compromised by uveitis, surgery, and limbal paracentesis. Breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier allows protein into the aqueous humor and results in mild to severe inflammation. Diagnosis of protein in the aqueous humor is traditionally a subjective measurement.

Identification of an Escherichia coli protein impurity in preparations of a recombinant pharmaceutical.

A host-cell protein impurity found in preparations of recombinant human acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) was identified. Samples of aFGF examined by western blot analysis employing antiserum raised against an Escherichia coli cell lysate contained an immunoreactive protein with a molecular weight of approximately 26,000. The impurity was chromatographically isolated and the N-terminal sequence was determined.

The structure of Ro 09-0198 in different environments.

The constitution and configuration of Ro 09-0198 (cinnamycin) have been determined in DMSO. Further investigations in aqueous solution, in SDS micelles and in a lipid bilayer have been done to study the influence of different environments on the conformation of the peptide. It turned out that in spite of the polycyclic structure of the molecule, the conformation is drastically changed going from water to SDS micelles.

Interaction of rhizosphere bacteria, fertilizer, and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi with sea oats.

Plants must be established quickly on replenished beaches in order to stabilize the sand and begin the dune-building process. The objective of this research was to determine whether inoculation of sea oats (Uniola paniculata L.) with bacteria (indigenous rhizosphere bacteria and N(2) fixers) alone or in combination with vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi would enhance plant growth in beach sand.

An outbreak of hepatitis A among cancer patients treated with interleukin-2 and lymphokine-activated killer cells.

An outbreak of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection occurred among cancer patients treated with interleukin-2 (IL-2) and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells between July and September 1986 at six different clinical centers. Among 85 patients tested serologically for recent HAV infection, 22 (39%) of 56 susceptible patients developed acute HAV infection. Only exposure to LAK cells cultured in medium containing human serum from two specific manufactured pools was associated with HAV infection.

Application of fourth derivative absorption spectroscopy to protein quantitation during purification.

A method for protein quantitation in the presence of nonprotein cellular components is described. The method is based on measurement of two tryptophan-specific signals in the fourth derivative of the protein's ultraviolet absorption spectrum, a peak at 283 nm and a trough at 288 nm. The amplitude between these two extremes is shown to vary linearly with protein concentration for bovine serum albumin and the outer membrane vesicles of Neissera meningitidis even when these protein solutions are supplemented with enough nucleic acid to completely obscure the parent absorption spectrum of the protein.

Conformational analysis of cyclic peptides in solution.

The strategy and tactics of conformational analysis of cyclic peptides in solution is demonstrated by the example of cyclo(-D-Pro-Phe-Thr-Phe-Trp-Phe-). Spin-locked experiments like rotating frame nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy (ROESY), ROTO, and TOCSY are successfully applied to assign all proton signals and to obtain distance information. A crude conformational model was built using the nmr data.

A nurse-associated epidemic of cardiac arrests in an intensive care unit.

Review of 2219 admissions to an intensive care unit at a large urban hospital from 1983 to 1985 revealed an epidemic of cardiac arrests during the evening shift from January 1984 to March 1985. Of the 88 evening-shift cardiac arrests during this time, one specific nurse (Nurse 14) was the care giver for 57 (65%). Eight of ten epidemic-period patients who experienced shift-specific circadian recurrences of cardiac arrests were patients of Nurse 14.

Establishment of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and other microorganisms on a beach replenishment site in Florida.

Beach replenishment is a widely used method of controlling coastal erosion. To reduce erosional losses from wind, beach grasses are often planted on the replenishment sands. However, there is little information on the microbial populations in this material that may affect plant establishment and growth.

Fetal hydantoin syndrome: inhibition of placental folic acid transport as a potential mechanism for fetal growth retardation in the rat.

Maternal hydantoin ingestion during pregnancy results in a well defined clinical entity termed "fetal hydantoin syndrome". The clinical characteristics of this syndrome includes growth retardation, and congenital anomalies. Because folic acid is essential for protein synthesis and growth, and since hydantoin interferes with intestinal transport of folic acid, we postulated that part of the fetal hydantoin syndrome may be due to inhibition of placental folic acid by maternal hydantoin.

Expression of interpersonal aggression by angered and nonangered persons with the type A and type B behavior patterns.

Thirty-seven subjects with the Type A or the Type B behavior pattern were first either angered or not angered in a problem-solving task by a confederate who posed as another subject. In a subsequent bogus learning experiment, the Type A and Type B subjects had the opportunity to punish or reward the confederate. The effectiveness of the anger manipulation was attested to by the fact that angered subjects had reliably higher pulse rates, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure.
