Background: Constituting ~0.5% of all NHS cataract operations, national provision of immediately sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS) is limited. Combining offering ISBCS within a novel one-stop see-and-treat (S&T) cataract pathway would offer patients the opportunity for two cataract operations in a single hospital visit.

Background: Inequalities in cancer, palliative, and end-of-life care services remain a significant challenge, particularly for ethnic minorities who face systemic barriers such as limited awareness, cultural stigmas, and language differences. These disparities hinder equitable access to essential services and contribute to poorer health outcomes for affected communities. Addressing these challenges requires targeted, culturally sensitive initiatives that promote both awareness and uptake of care.

Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) are a group of developing countries with shared economic, healthcare, and scientific interests. These countries navigate multiple syndemics, and the COVID-19 pandemic placed severe strain on already burdened BRICS' healthcare systems, hampering effective pandemic interventions. Genomic surveillance and molecular epidemiology remain indispensable tools for facilitating informed pandemic intervention.

A phylogenetic assessment of HIV-1 transmission trends among people who inject drugs from Coastal and Nairobi, Kenya.

Although recent modeling suggests that needle-syringe programs (NSPs) have reduced parenteral HIV transmission among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Kenya, the prevalence in this population remains high (∼14-20%, compared to ∼4% in the larger population). Reducing transmission or acquisition requires understanding historic and modern transmission trends, but the relationship between the PWID HIV-1 sub-epidemic and the general epidemic in Kenya is not well understood. We incorporated 303 new (2018-21) HIV-1 sequences from PWID and their sexual and injecting partners with 2666 previously published Kenyan HIV-1 sequences to quantify relative rates and direction of HIV-1 transmissions involving PWID from the coast and Nairobi regions of Kenya.

Exploratory study from an end-of-life research partnership network to improve access for ethnically diverse communities in one region.

Background: Minority ethnic patients are less likely to access timely and effective palliative and end-of-life care and, as a consequence, more likely to experience poorer symptom management and receive more intensive treatments at the end of life. Research activity has the potential to address the aforementioned barriers to improve access. However, there is a need to develop capacity and capability, particularly within underserved communities, to provide an infrastructure that can drive research activity informed by the community to benefit the community.

Targeting DTX2/UFD1-mediated FTO degradation to regulate antitumor immunity.

Here, we show that vitamin E succinate (VES) acts as a degrader for the mA RNA demethylase fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO), thus suppressing tumor growth and resistance to immunotherapy. FTO is ubiquitinated by its E3 ligase DTX2, followed by UFD1 recruitment and subsequent degradation in the proteasome. VES binds to FTO and DTX2, leading to enhanced FTO-DTX2 interaction, FTO ubiquitination, and degradation in FTO-dependent tumor cells.

The DNA-based Lassa vaccine INO-4500 confers durable protective efficacy in cynomolgus macaques against lethal Lassa fever.

Background: We have previously developed a DNA-based vaccine, INO-4500, encoding the Lassa lineage IV glycoprotein precursor. INO-4500, when delivered with electroporation, elicited humoral and cellular responses, and conferred 100% protection in cynomolgus non-human primates. Here, we expanded the characterization of INO-4500 assessing immunogenicity and protective efficacy of lower doses and single immunization, and the durability of immune responses.

Dynamics and ecology of a multi-stage expansion of Oropouche virus in Brazil.

In March 2024, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) issued an alert in response to a rapid increase in Oropouche fever cases across South America. Brazil has been particularly affected, reporting a novel reassortant lineage of the Oropouche virus (OROV) and expansion to previously non-endemic areas beyond the Amazon Basin. Utilising phylogeographic approaches, we reveal a multi-scale expansion process with both short and long-distance dispersal events, and diffusion velocities in line with human-mediated jumps.

Exploring the Motivations, Challenges, and Integration of Internationally Educated Healthcare Workers in the UK: A Scoping Review.

Background: Healthcare worker migration, influenced by push and pull factors, is accentuated by active recruitment strategies of developed nations. This scoping review explores experiences of internationally educated nurses, midwives, and healthcare professionals in the UK since 2010, acknowledging the historical context of UK recruitment policy and the implementation of codes of practice by the World Health Organisation and the UK government.

Methods: Using the Population, Concept, and Context framework, systematic literature searches were conducted in various databases, including CINAHL, Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed/Medline, and Google Scholar.

Investigating social orienting in children with Phelan-McDermid syndrome and 'idiopathic' autism.

Background: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by developmental delay/intellectual disability, absent or delayed speech, physical dysmorphic features and high rates of autistic features. However, it is currently unknown whether people with PMS have similar neurocognitive atypicalities to those previously identified in idiopathic autism. Disruption in social orienting has previously been suggested as an early hallmark feature of idiopathic autism that impacts social learning and social interaction.

Methodology to enable high-throughput imaging of Arabidopsis seedlings on cover glass-bottom multiwell plates.

High-throughput imaging enables rapid collection of large datasets and is used widely in many systems. However, this is not often used in plant-based systems due to issues related to the need to mount tissues and autofluorescence of plant metabolites. We therefore developed methodology enabling high-throughput imaging of Arabidopsis roots.

Diagnostic radiography workforce expectations of learners against the 2023 HCPC standards of proficiency: Results of a UK Delphi study.

Introduction: The UK Health and Care Professions Council revised the Standards of Proficiency for diagnostic radiographers in 2023 to reflect modern practices and service needs. This will impact on the training and assessment of learners throughout their programmes in order to support them to meet the threshold standards.

Methods: A Delphi survey was distributed to UK diagnostic radiographers to ascertain the stage of training in which they expect each standard of proficiency to be demonstrated by the learner.

Mapping the migrant diagnostic radiographers in the UK: A national survey.

Introduction: The international recruitment of healthcare workers remains a UK strategy to manage workforce gaps and maintain service delivery. Although not a new phenomenon, this has been exacerbated by chronic shortages. There is a need to profile the current international recruits and identify individual motivators to understand the opportunities for future recruitment and retention initiatives.
