Introduction: As military environments integrate more complex technological systems, operators increasingly require more assistance from automation. When used properly, automation can significantly enhance performance; however, proper use is predicated on the operator's trust in the automation (TIA). TIA, like trust among people, is influenced by biological, psychosocial, and behavioral aspects.

The Hugoniot is the equation of state of a shock-compressed material and is a key part of high-pressure physics. One way of calculating it is via the Hugoniostat that has significant computational advantages over direct calculation via non-equilibrium molecular dynamics. We introduce a number of improvements to the Hugoniostat, which significantly reduce the run time and the number of atoms required for converged results.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. The highly dynamic nature of MS lesions has made them difficult to study using traditional histopathology due to the specificity of current stains. This requires numerous stains to track and study demyelinating activity in MS.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on young adults under 40 with elevated LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), analyzing how these levels relate to other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and their predicted long-term CVD risk.
  • - It examined data from over 2,100 young adults and found that those with higher LDL-C levels also exhibited more non-LDL-C risk factors, which independently contributed to a higher predicted risk of CVD over the next 30 years.
  • - The results suggest that as LDL-C levels increase, non-LDL-C risk factors tend to cluster together, highlighting the need for better management strategies for cardiovascular risks in this age group.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system characterized by increased inflammation and immune responses, oxidative injury, mitochondrial dysfunction, and iron dyshomeostasis leading to demyelination and axonal damage. In MS, incomplete remyelination results in chronically demyelinated axons and degeneration coinciding with disability. This suggests a failure in the ability to remyelinate in MS, however, the precise underlying mechanisms remain unclear.

Background: The ability of a 1-time measurement of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to predict the cumulative exposure to these lipids during early adulthood (age 18-40 years) and the associated atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk after age 40 years is not clear.

Objectives: The objectives of this study were to evaluate whether a 1-time measurement of non-HDL-C or LDL-C in a young adult can predict cumulative exposure to these lipids during early adulthood, and to quantify the association between cumulative exposure to non-HDL-C or LDL-C during early adulthood and the risk of ASCVD after age 40 years.

Methods: We included CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study) participants who were free of cardiovascular disease before age 40 years, were not taking lipid-lowering medications, and had ≥3 measurements of LDL-C and non-HDL-C before age 40 years.

Objectives: Most older adults with lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, questioning, transgender, and related identities (LGBTQ+) are concerned about receiving lower-quality care and/or being mistreated in nursing homes. Older LGBTQ+ veterans may have additional reservations about care in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) nursing homes (Community Living Centers [CLCs]) because of experience with past discriminatory military policies (eg, bans on participating in military service, Don't Ask Don't Tell). This article describes one of the first VA CLCs to participate in the Human Rights Campaign-developed Long-Term Care Equality Index (LEI).

Charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) is a well-established technique that provides direct mass spectral outputs regardless of analyte heterogeneity or molecular weight. Over the past few years, it has been demonstrated that CDMS can be multiplexed on Orbitrap analyzers utilizing an integrated approach termed individual ion mass spectrometry (IMS). To further increase adaptability, robustness, and throughput of this technique, here, we present a method that utilizes numerous integrated equipment components including a Kingfisher system, SampleStream platform, and Q Exactive mass spectrometer to provide a fully automated workflow for immunoprecipitation, sample preparation, injection, and subsequent IMS acquisition.

Duration of overall survival in patients with cancer has lengthened due to earlier detection and improved treatments. However, these improvements have created challenges in assessing the impact of newer treatments, particularly those used early in the treatment pathway. As overall survival remains most decision-makers' preferred primary endpoint, therapeutic innovations may take a long time to be introduced into clinical practice.

In California, wildfire risk and severity have grown substantially in the last several decades. Research has characterized extensive adverse health impacts from exposure to wildfire-attributable fine particulate matter (PM), but few studies have quantified long-term outcomes, and none have used a wildfire-specific chronic dose-response mortality coefficient. Here, we quantified the mortality burden for PM exposure from California fires from 2008 to 2018 using Community Multiscale Air Quality modeling system wildland fire PM estimates.
